Blog: Resolving to keep the faith

Friday 2nd January 2009, 6:52AM GMT.

WOLVES 2 GD 16A happy New Year to you and your families, writes Nathan Lloyd.

So, have you made any New Year’s resolutions? Mine is to give up the booze and the fags, but seeing as I’ve never had a cigarette in my life and I’ve always been tea-total, that really shouldn’t be difficult.

Some people have struggled to comprehend why I don’t drink alcohol, and because I haven’t got a really compelling answer, it can leave them a little bit bewildered.

One such person, we’ll call him JR, really struggles to get his head round my lack of alcohol consumption and recently asked me if I was out on a date, what would I order at the bar to safe face in front of a female? On a lad’s trip out he went to bar and came back to the table with shots for everyone. Hilariously mine was a shot of Vimto!

Similarly this season, a lot of fans, players and even managers of rival clubs have struggled to get their head’s round why Wolves sit proudly on top of the Championship going into 2009.

It’s probably because a lot of these people only ever see Wolves play on TV, where we rarely shine. And but for a Hennessey spill against Blackpool, we might well be facing the New Year with even more of a points cushion to quiet our detractors.

Still, 18 wins out of 26 games with 54 league goals so far this season is pretty remarkable. That’s a goal more and as many wins as we managed in the entire of the miserable football that Wolves played last season and only 5 wins short of West Brom’s total to win the league championship in 2007 -2008.

This season, with the help of some excellent acquisitions, Mick has got his plans back on track. We are scoring bucket loads of goals and winning more often than not.

This time last year I was writing a blog about how the season had been a waste and how MM was turning into a bit of a joke. Shows how much I know, eh?

Onwards into the mysterious world of the January transfer window. Who goes and comes in always makes for a fascinating month of debate for the fans. Ebanks-Blake, Edwards and Elokobi were three fine additions to the squad in January 2008.

Unfortunately as soon as Mick strayed from following the Shamen’s philosophy that ‘E’s are good’ (Surnames that is), it all went slightly Pete Tong when the bumbling Kevin Kyle joined the club on loan from Coventry.

Mick also loaned out the amazingly terrible Jamie Clapham to Leicester and forgotten man Charlie Mulgrew to Southend.

In the last month I have seen that Wolves have been linked with a number of players, including the wonderfully sounding Tamika Mkandawire an ex-Albion trainee defender currently on the books with Leyton Orient. The fact that Tamika never got a chance to play in the stripes of Albion should already guarantee his success in gold and black!

In midfield we have been linked with Scott Sinclair, Wayne Routledge, Marvin Elliot and JJ O’Toole and up front, Alan Gow and Matt Fryatt.

And that’s with only one day of the month gone. Apart from Tamika, I have seen all the other players play and Marvin Elliott and Matt Fryatt would probably be the pick from those linked with the club.

Matt Fryatt is currently scoring loads of goals at Leicester, albeit a division below Wolves. He didn’t exactly set the Championship alight when he played in it for a couple of seasons, but from what I have seen this campaign, he looks sharper and fitter and a much improved player.

Would it be too early for Mark Davies to come back in from Leicester and challenge Jones and Edwards for that 2nd central midfield slot alongside Henry? All the reports suggest that he is playing some brilliant football and to have him back in the team playing like we know Mark can, would be like having a new £5 million signing.

If the only bit of business Mick does is to secure Mancienne for the rest of the season, I would be more than happy.

Most Wolves fans will also be aware that Kightly, Hennessey and Ebanks-Blake are rumoured targets of Premiership clubs. I said it my last blog that these players would probably be ill-advised to leave the club at the moment when we are on course for something wonderful.

As Mick did last January, it would be good to see the fringe players shipped out, as much for their own playing careers as for the good of the club. Darren Potter is unlikely to play in the first team again, so surely he would be happier plying his trade elsewhere?

Blues in the cup at the weekend will probably give a few of these fringe players a chance to stake a claim for more league consideration in the coming months.

A good cup run is always good for moral and I never buy into the argument that the cup is an unwanted distraction. That is of course until we get knocked out and I will probably say that we are concentrating on the league!

Perhaps playing away from Molineux, without the pressure of the league, will allow some of the players to play their more natural game and we can perhaps take the game to Birmingham.

I’ve got a sneaky feeling that Vokes could be key for us this weekend. I’m going for 1-1 and then we can bring them back to Molineux for another great game and a win.

I’m hoping that if I’m still asked to write the blogs next season, then in January 2010 I could be talking about Wolves ‘doing a Hull’ and holding our own in the top flight. I shouldn’t get carried away though; there is still some testing months ahead in this campaign.

Mick set a target this week of 92 points for Wolves to get promoted. That would mean winning around half of the games we have left to play, and looking at the remaining fixtures that should be achievable, shouldn’t it?

I like the blog, its gentle and aimless. There’s a few other Wolves player around who should be given a nudge – Where’s Gobern, for example? We escaped with a good draw against sheffield and but for Hennessey, would have won at Blackpool.Take nothing from Blackpool nor Doncaster both are good enough to survive. Brum are on the slide so I predict at 1-3 win to the good guys.
Happy new year to all you’se Wolves supporters

Totally agree with the Davies comment. My old man watches Leicester and says he’s been playing really well but thinks he’d need more games to challange for the spot in front of jones or Edwards.

When does this blogging bloke say its anything but 2009? You’ve lost me…..

I wouldn’t be bothered if Mancienne went back, does no one remember how well Craddock was playing before he got injured? The South Bank was kind enough to sing his song to Neill Collins….”There’s only one Neill Collins, one Neill Collins, he used to be ***** but now he’s alright, walking in a Wanderers wonderland…”

happy new year to all wolves fans. good blog and i am very confident of going up and beating albions points total no problem. However, as the albion have found the step up is huge. Keogh, Ward, possibly henry, involved in our 1st team are not good enough for the prem. Would like to see hennessey sold for 8 mil and kasper schmeichel in to challenge ikeme and murray and strengthen the midfield. my team for blues:

Happy New Year to all Wolves and Midlands football fans.

I’d like to see Mark Davies back in the fold and I think we need another striker in as its obvious that Iwelumo is beginning to run out of gas.

Apart from that just don’t let SEB, Kightly or Hennessey go and we should be set up nicely for promotion!

Lets get promoted in April! And if the stripy lot can stay up and its Blues, Wolves, Villa and Albion in the top flight, now that really would be something special.

Number 7, Jason Lowe (as a snakes belly!), have you ever ben to Australia? Playing our full stregth team would surely signal intent to all other teams that we mean business, league or cup, it does’nt matter, we want to keep the winning mentality running all the way through the season. A couple of changes would’nt go amiss eg rest Looms for Vokesey, maybe Ikeme and Shackell could have a run out too? Blues 1 – Wolves 2.

We seem to be abit light on the wing if Jarvis or Kightly are out. I would like us to pinch Wayne Routledge under the noses of Cardiff, hes only 23 and at this level would be a good addition. Still too early yet to even think about promotion!! So far so good…..

Firstly, happy new year to all. Another good blog Nathan. Really hope you are still blogging next season.

I think that any new players brought in this transfer period should not only be capable of providing cover during the push for promotion but capable of holding their own should promotion be achieved. This I am afraid limits our range. Cost is as always the governing factor. But why the need? Look at the stats.

    August top 10pts
    September top 22pts
    October top 31pts
    November top 47pts
    December top 58pts

Does this sound like we need wholesale change?
I for one don’t think so.

2009..hopefully a time to play footballers in their rightful positions (not Foley left midfield)& their rightful clubs (Davies back at MOL, although a couple of months football away from the spot light and expectancy of ourselves may do him good?).
To push on we need players with a bit of guile and premiership quality…should have gone harder for Brian Howard…out-played us last week.
keep the faith though and maybe my kids (season ticket holders as well) may get some bragging righs back over there albion cousins…!

Nathan…brilliant blog my friend, spot on and very honest. Happy New Year to you as well – if they don’t ask you to continue writing, send ‘em to see me, I’ll sort ‘em for ya !! Also Happy New Year to all Wulfies and them from the other side !!
Think Alan Gow would be brilliant for us. He did pretty well against us the other day. Maybe not a ’90 minute man’ but as an ‘impact man’ you probably wouldn’t do much better unless you paid several million pounds. Would also like to see Carlos Edwards back as cover on the wing. MM seemed to have him just firing on all cylinders when he got called back. Routledge may be ok, but I think the jury is still out on him. Could do with another Centre Back and like many I think we should go in with a hard to refuse bid for Berra. He’s been sort of linked with Premier clubs but there doesn’t seem to have been anything concrete.
As for the rest of the season, lets take it a game at a time. This season if we drop unexpected points it’s pretty certain that the other challengers will also drop unexpected poits. Is the FA Cup a distraction at the moment ? As much as I love the competition I have to say ‘yes’. I would rather have the Premier next season than win the Cup this season. Then we will see what our glorious owner really is made of !!

    Happy New Year Nathan.

I have generally found your blogs to be entertaining most of the time. If I have any critisisms they would be:
Some this season have been too candy-floss for my taste.
There have been some stories this season made for incisive, hard-hitting blogging to which you have not turned your attention to.

I would certainly have you back, though.

With a new year come the resolutions for many.
I have never made resolutions because perfection does not need improvement.
However, it has been pointed out (by people I respect) that I am in danger of slipping off my pedestal, so I have made a number of them this year:

    I must be LESS:
    Pleasant
    Accommodating

    I must be MORE:
    Angry
    Obnoxious
    Ingratious

    Things to do:
Burn an effigy of the Mick every day before breakfast.
