Parking fines net councils a fortune

Thursday 1st January 2009, 11:34AM GMT.

wd3174078parking-2-tt-29Parking fines in some West Midlands streets are netting councils up to £1,000 every week.

More than £400,000 was raked in last year from the 20 most lucrative streets.

Among those being deliberately targeted by traffic wardens are High Street and Little Lane, West Bromwich, which generated almost £100,000.

They are among 20 “cash cow” areas revealed by the Express & Star today using the Freedom of Information Act. The figures come from councils which have taken over responsibility for traffic wardens from police.

Teams of wardens operate in Sandwell, Wolverhampton, Dudley and Stafford, with money raised going straight to the councils.

Walsall and Cannock Chase are set to take on their own traffic wardens this year. Walsall expects to bring in £3 million in fines in its first year and Cannock, which starts next month, expects to issue 9,000 fines.

Matthew Elliot, from the Tax Payers Alliance said: “Councils see parking fines as a way of raising extra cash.”

Councils say wardens improve traffic flow and safety, and the cash is invested in the road network

As one pound in every five goes to council pensions schemes i think this is another nasty piece of work to make sure they the council heads and their cronies don’t lose out on their pensions. You were warned:))

Dominic – that’s all well and good as long as the restricted parking is decided sensibly and responsibly. Unfortunately some streets end up with parking restrictions where residents need to park.

So rather than have a parking allocation for residents you get single/double yellows, as it raises plenty of cash for the council.

The question which should be raised is ‘Blue Badge Parking’. There is an obvious abuse of this system which means that the genuine disabled person has difficulty finding a space.

So does that mean we’ll now get a poll tax rebate? Oh and for the record, I do hope that all procedures and protocols are accountable to the Council’s employer: the general public.

    Dominic,

Sure its dead simply unfortunately like myself i asked a traffic warden was i okay to park at a certain place, no lines, no parking bays he said yes, 30 minues later i came back and found a ticket on my car for 100 pounds it seems there were a few tiny little signs round a large area stating you couldn’t park, to say they were difficult to find and see wouldn’t be an exageration.

On pointing out to the council gestapo chief what had actually happened after a few months of argueing they dropped the fine. I found out that all the warders were asylum seekers told to book anything that stopped maybe even that moved slowly as well.

I take it you’ve never been booked or parked illegally?? are you a saint?? :))

Discusting, Dominic get a life. Estimate you will need 1 hour to go shopping or attend an appointment then go over a few minutes and you are robbed by these vultures. My council tax is a massive cost each month already and still they cannot manage without this type of rip off. Remember The Public obscene, a criminal waste of public funds.Incompetence from councils repeated over and over.

Nothing wrong with council pensions roy. They got to live on something when they retire cos its a fact our private and state pensions ain’t gonna keep us. So it’s subsidised- isn’t everything from the council in some form or other. The council tax we pay for services is heavily subsidised cos if we had to pay the true costs-house holders couldn’t afford it. Good luck to them as i’ve said before if you cant beat em-join em and stop your jealous whinging.

It’s all well and good to say don’t park illegally, but for three days a week we cannot park outside the house that we pay full council tax for, in a car that is fully taxed and insured.we do not live on a main road,It is just another way of getting money out of the working man, dead simple just about sums you up.

Dominic, sadly we mere mortals are not perfect like you, but first and formost lets get the facts straight, Councils are there to provide services for residents, now there are 2 ways to look at this problem, first is the councils way, identify an area where people obviously need to park and milk it for all its worth.

Or they can do what they are employed to do and look at why people need to park there in the first place, see if there is an obvious need to park in that area, say for instance people work in that area / people live in that area/ people need to access a facility in that area.

Its not the job of the council to persecute its residents !!!!!! its job is to serve the community.

One of the main reasons that people park in Little Lane, is to access the nearby hospital and this is why the council want to persecute them.

This is a headline from 20 March 2007, “SHAMEFUL’ HOSPITAL PARKING FEES RAKE IN £95M”

If Sandwell leaders were able to tell the truth, they would tell you that this isn’t about enforcing the free flow of traffic in the borough, but more to do with preventing motorist parking for free on the public roads, they want to force motorist to pay exorbitant parking charges on Sandwell’s Hospital Car Parks.

The borough sends round a free Council Magazine about every 12 months, I believe that in that magazine should be a section detailing exactly where our money goes I.E. How much is spent on free pensions for part time councillors, how much our councillors are paid for how many hours work.

How much is spent cleaning our roads, how much is spent cleaning out storm drains etc, also why is it that councillors believe that we motorists should pay to park in the borough but councillors park for free at the council building in Oldbury?????

“Matthew Elliot, from the Tax Payers Alliance” – I’m a tax payer and there’s absolutely NO WAY I want this jumped up imbecile with an exagerated sense of self-importance speaking for me.

So, who exactly is he? And what exactly is “The Tax Payers Alliance”?

Well, there are about 30 million taxpayers in the UK, yet the “alliance” (that says it speaks for us all) was created by just three people, and now with just seven full-time staff. The three founders, Andrew Allum, a former CONSERVATIVE councillor, Florence Heath, a geologist and former Young CONSERVATIVE, and Matthew Elliott, co-founder and former TORY researcher, are hardly representative.

As I said, there’s no way I want them thinking that they represent me. They should crawl back under whatever vile stinking rock they came from under.

50p per 20 minutes or £5 – £7 per trip. A joke. It’s just an attempt to push people onto the failing metro so it’s doesn’t look like such a waste of time. I don’t shop in Wolverhampton anymore. Its cheaper to go to Merry Hill or even the Bullring where I can pay just for a couple of hours.
And to the people who say don’t park illegally then… we’re not talking about parking in the the foyer of the art gallery, we’re talking being 6,7,8 minutes late back to your car because you had to change a nappy- I had to watch for te n minutes while a smirking warden gave me a ticket, 3 kids with me, 7 minutes late. Let your money do the talking and go shop elsewhere….

Mike Boyd – so parking fines are a tax on stupidity. Tell you what, why don’t we have a tax on smug, petty pompous know-alls? I’d love to see a few tickets issued to the “don’t park illegally, don’t get fined” brigade.
    A few points:
    (1) For several months this year, while the council switched from police to civil enforcement, there were no traffic wardens at all. The town did not grind to a standstill. Similarly, Bridgnorth went for a very long time without any traffic wardens, I don’t recall there being any serious problems.
    (2) The small number of serious parking infringements, ie ones that either cause an obstruction or put safety at risk, can be dealt with by police – the only way to deal with these is to tow them away. Sticking a ticket on a car doesn’t remove the danger. But unless there is a real danger or obstruction, people should be allowed to park where they like. Sack all the traffic wardens and put more police on the beat.
    (3) The main reason people park illegally in Dudley is because the idiotic council introduc ed parking charges in 1993. All public car parks should be free of charge – the public owns them, so why should we pay to use them?
    (4) I would not be surprised if some of the “don’t park illegally” brigade turned out to be the mollycoddled public sector workers with the subsidised pensioners. They seem to display the smug attitudes which are the exclusive preserve of those who live ivory tower existences where the 40-minute appointment never turns out to be 1 hour 1 minute, where people don’t lose money because they had to stop and search for a parking space, where they work regular and flexible hours. And when things do go wrong, they then take time off with “stress”.

Miss Opinion, Fact Illegal immigrants have been found on several occasions to be working when they shouldn’t, and yes, that even includes HM Government establishments, in London, in various capacities not only as cleaners etc.

“The Home Secretary Jacqui Smith faced huge embarrassment last night after it emerged that an illegal immigrant had been caught working on the front desk at the Home Office”

“An illegal immigrant was able to work at the House of Commons using a fake identity pass in a serious breach of security”

I got a parking ticket after I parked in a disabled spot whilst out for a meal and it’s not something I would normally do but on this occasion the car park was full and it was getting late and none of the six disabled spaces had been used so common sense kicked in and I enjoyed the meal only to return to find I had a parking ticket from OPC.

OPCServices Parking consultancy (Pirates) have the registered address of The Studio, St Nicholas Close, Elstree, Hertfordshire WD6 3EW so any correspondents with them should be addressed to that address and not the postal address PO Box 956, St Albans AL1 9HJ and it’s worth using registered post so that OPService Parking can not claim to have not received any disputes to parking fines or better still send them a copy of your dispute to enquiries@observices.co.uk. The company registration number is 3182298 but I have been unable to find the address of the company directors (Please let me have them if you can get them). OPC sales department can also be contacted on Tel 0845 130 4230 Fax 0845 130 5430

Please note that a private parking ticket is issued under a breach of contract and it is the driver who is libel for any breach of contract and not the registered keeper of the car and the keeper is under no obligation to disclose who the driver was at the time of the alleged breach of contract so it’s a good job my other half owns the car.

I advise anyone that receives a private parking ticket to cut out the monkey and go after the organ grinder who allow these unscrupulous thugs to operate on their premises and point out to these corporations that we as consumers refuse to be treated like cattle and milked.

In my case the owner of the car park turned out to be the Norwich Union so remember that the next time your insurance comes up for renewal and boycott the Norwich Union.

Due to the actions of these thugs the Harvesters Restaurant at the Roaring Meg retail park in Stevenage have been deprived of future income from me and I am in the process of contacting any other company that use the service of OPCServices to avoid them as they are turning customers away and I will also be naming and shaming so if you have any names then please pass them on to me at Avenger0-0-7@Mail.com (take out the dashes)

It’s your public duty to stand up to these thugs as running away will only make maters worse in the long term and being a coward and letting others do the work is not very public spirited.
