McCarthy: That’s two points dropped

Wolves' Sylvan Ebanks Blake shields ball away from former Molineux man Rob Edwards.

Mick McCarthy admitted last night’s 2-2 draw was a case of “two points dropped” after surrendering a lead with six minutes left.

Former Wolves defender Rob Edwards bundled home the equaliser after the visitors twice led through Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Matt Jarvis.

“It was two points dropped having been 2-1 up with six minutes to go plus what time added on,” said McCarthy.

McCarthy allowed Edwards to join Blackpool for £275,000 in August and he admitted he hated seeing him score but said it couldn’t happen to a nicer man.

“It was fantastic for him – there’s not a nicer bloke in football,” he said. “I said to Simon Grayson (former Blackpool boss) when he signed him ‘he’ll be club captain and he’ll be fantastic for you’.

“I didn’t want him to score against us but it’s Sod’s Law.”

Keeper Wayne Hennessey missed Kyel Reid’s free kick for Edwards’ goal and McCarthy admitted he thought his side could have defended better.

“It was a free kick that cost us and I thought we could have dealt with it better,” he added.

McCarthy felt his side deserved victory for their improved second-half performance. “They were the better side in the first half but in the second half, I thought we deserved it – we were the better side and I can’t remember Wayne having to make too many saves,” he said.

“We had some chances to win and I was delighted with our second half performance.

“I was pleased with the performance because I walked on the pitch at the end of the game and it was barely playable.”

Jarvis scored Wolves’ second and was the man of the match, and McCarthy hailed him as the most dangerous player on view.

“He’s back at it and, while he got the man of the match award, he could have had a hat-trick,” he said.

“He was our most dangerous player.

“I knew if I put him on the right he’d be a threat – I just felt he’d got the beating of Hartey (Ian Harte) and it proved to be the case.

“We didn’t get the ball to him in the first half, but in the second half, we did and it proved to be profitable.

“We’ve got pace to hurt teams and catch them on the break and the goal was well-worked and well finished.

“He’s a good player and he was flying before his injury.”

McCarthy admitted he told his team to “do a Blackpool” at half-time.

“I thought they were playing the conditions better than us and we conceded too much of the pitch in the first-half,” he said.

“They were playing it in behind us and turning us around, and they were playing for throw-ins, free kicks and corners which were causing us problems.

“I felt we had to try to stop them doing that and play exactly the same way.

“If we had to go and fight with them, we should do it in their half by getting it in behind them and turning them around and get up the pitch.”
