Mowbray stands by striking gamble

Saturday 27th December 2008, 12:19PM GMT.

Tony Mowbray is still well wrapped up after Christmas Day.

Roman Bednar and Luke Moore are poised to return for Albion as Tony Mowbray targets victory against Tottenham at The Hawthorns tomorrow.

The strike duo were left out controversially as the Baggies went down 2-0 at Chelsea yesterday.

But both are likely to play against Spurs and record signing Borja Valero could also be back as Mowbray looks to reap the rewards of resting players at Stamford Bridge.

“Like many sides who have done well recently at Chelsea, we played one up front and we had half an eye on the game against Tottenham,” admitted Mowbray, who gave a rare start up front to Craig Beattie and left out Bednar and Moore after both scored against Manchester City.

“We’re just utilising the three strikers at our football club. We used one up front yesterday and we’ll wait to see what we do tomorrow regarding the other strikers.

“In our predicament I think we’ve got to target certain football matches and if you’re looking at Chelsea away and Tottenham at home you’ve got to decide where you’ve got the best chance to pick up points. We went to frustrate yesterday and if it had stayed 0-0 for any length of time we’d always got two strikers on our bench to try to win the game.

“Come tomorrow it’s a different game, different players and different formation possibly.

“If we can win tomorrow it might be the best decision to have started Roman and Luke on the bench.”

Mowbray is confident his team can cause problems for Spurs, whose form has levelled out following a flying start to life under Harry Redknapp.

And the Baggies manager reckons home form will be the key to his side’s chances of survival in the second half of the season.

“Tottenham went on an amazing string of results,” said Mowbray.

“They have got some very high quality footballers and it’s a mystery to everyone why they were struggling so badly.

“Potentially every team we play has got better footballers than we’ve got and yet, on our day, we can give teams a really tough day, as we did on Sunday against Manchester City.

“They were a team with some very high quality footballers, yet we beat them.

“So Tottenham is a game we target to show high-energy and high-adrenaline, get the supporters behind us and try to get the points.

Ê”We’ve played the big-four now all away from home.

“We’ve had a tough run of fixtures and I look at the fixtures remaining and see more than enough where, if we’re right on the day at home, we can get enough victories to comfortably get over 40 points.”

“Whether that’s going to be enough – I don’t know.

“It’s easy saying it but we’ve actually got to produce on the day.”

Meanwhile, Mowbray had stood by his decision to omit Moore and Bednar from his starting line-up at Chelsea – five days after the duo won the Hawthorns encounter with Manchester City.

“You’ve always got to strike a balance with the way you play at Stamford Bridge,” he said.

“With their one up front and five midfielders rotating I think you’ve either got to be very brave or very naive to play two strikers against them in our predicament.

“We tried to give ourselves the best opportunity yesterday.

“I think if we’d have gone with two up front too early they could have been out of sight.

“The frustration is the timing of the goals we conceded.

“We did try to frustrate because, looking at their home results recently, I think they’ve struggled against teams that make life difficult for them in midfield.

“Yet, to concede such an elementary goal so early on was a blow to us.

“It was a straightforward cross into the box and Drogba headed it into the net.

“It was very frustrating and yet, to go in 1-0 down wouldn’t have been the end of the world.

“If it had stayed at 1-0 for any length of time the crowd could have got agitated but to concede in first-half stoppage time was very disappointing from our perspective.”
