Wolves blog: New year, New fear

Friday 19th December 2008, 9:23AM GMT.

ebanks-blake.jpegWolves blogger Nathan Lloyd talks about a family day out and hopes the Premier League wolves can be kept from the door in January.

This season I have been quite vociferous to my family at just how well this current crop of Wolves youngsters has been playing.

So when I took five family members Molineux to see this talented Wolves team play Barnsley to celebrate my mother’s birthday, the law of the sod dictated that Wolves wouldn’t be brilliant at all!

Thanks to everyone who wished my mother well for her birthday, I know it was greatly appreciated.  Oh and thanks to’ Fozzie’ at the Wolves for organizing the tannoy and programme stuff.

I know it has been said in many quarters, but although we had quite a few average performers against Barnsley, I think Kevin Foley’s contribution must go down as one of the best from any player all season.

I hope we can keep the January window predators away, because if any of the Premier League scouts were there to watch their more probable targets (SEB, Kightly, Hennessey), they might be going back with a few unwanted notes on a surprise Irish right-back.

I know Foley has come out and said that he loves the club and wants to stay for life, but Thierry Henry said the same thing about his wife and Arsenal. Two months later he was divorced and playing for Barcelona.

Surely no player would be foolish enough to leave Wolves next month?

If I was lucky enough to be born with footballing talent and I was at a club like Wolves, top of the table, playing great football, scoring loads, looking like going on and getting? Oops, I nearly said it then.

Then what would motivate me to move to a club in the Premier League?  If you are someone like Henri Camara, then it would no doubt come down to money.

I can’t believe that he moved to Wigan out of ambition to further his footballing career, I mean come on, Wigan?

Unless the likes of Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Michael Kightly and Wanye Hennessey were moving to a Premier League club such as the supposed big four or even Villa and Spurs, then what’s the point?

What happens if they do join a big club with a big squad?  Does that player then just become part of a large squad and then have to battle his way to play all over again?

I suppose I am slightly biased.  I can’t see why anybody would want to leave this great club.  Does Henri Camara regret leaving when he did?  I very much doubt it. I’m sure his bank balance is in a much healthier because of it.

Come January, there has been speculation from all sorts of media that our best players are targets for Premier League clubs.  I think I’d worry if they weren’t targets.  Mick and the team must be doing something right.

I’ll talk about the transfer window in more detail in my next blog, the last this year.  But the Scott Sinclair loan from Chelsea would be a welcome one, although it seems to be Wolves and every other league team currently chasing him.

Surely as a player you would get sick of being loaned out and at some point you will think, either I’m good enough to play for Chelsea or I need to try elsewhere?

This would be Scott’s fifth loan move in three years since joining Chelsea, where he has made just five appearances.

Perhaps you could say the same thing about Michael Mancienne, who is actually a year older that Sinclair.  My advice to Mancienne would be to demand a transfer to Wolves now. What a Christmas present that would be to the Wolves faithful!

Anyway, back briefly to the Barnsley game.  Foley apart, most Wolves players had fairly average games on Saturday.  Unfortunately Keogh went from a man of the match performance against Derby, so I am told, to another anonymous performance against the Tykes.

No one should get on his back, but he needs to be consistent if he ever wants another decent run in the side . Surely he can hear 20,000 of us screaming, “shoot?”

I think manager Mick McCarthy will bring Chris Iwelumo against Doncaster after his recuperating break to lead the line with SEB, who has been nominated for the PFA Fans’ player of the month for December.

So get along to the PFA website (givemefootball.com) and show your support.

The Wolves Hall of Fame always had a seat booked our greatest ever manager, Stan Cullis.  Jackery Jones’ inclusion, I can’t really argue for or against.

I originally went for Billy Annis, obviously only from what I read from reports from the time.  But it is fascinating and quite right that we now have the Hall of Fame and I’ll be a keen observer as to who gets inducted in years to come.

This weekend, away to Donny has that horrible banana skin type feel to it.  Top versus bottom isn’t a guarantee of a win anymore in any league, but surely we should be going to South Yorkshire and getting all three points?

Their key defender, Matt Mills, was sent off in the last game against Palace and will now be banned for this fixture, so that should make it a tad easier to pick up all three points.

Matt Jarvis is chomping to get back in the side and his inclusion would give us the balance we need in midfield.  I’m going for a tight 2-0 win with both goals from SEB.

The great thing by the time we kick off at 3pm, Reading and Birmingham will have hopefully already fought out a goalless bore draw.

Hope you and your families have a wonderful Christmas and I’ll see you all on Boxing Day for the home game against Sheffield United.

great blog mate and merry xmas to you and all my fellow wolves.

I too would never want to play for another club and I have been lucky enough to play at molineux in the wolves shirt. I think if we get promotion mancienne will join permanently. Sinclair or edwards are needed as back up and I have heard more then once that beckford will join in jan from leeds, which in my opinion will be superb, that then gives keogh the chance to go on loan or be sold, matty fryatt is another name strongly linked.

I think a nice draw at birmingham and 3 points for us in any shape or form will be a cracking weekend and although i cant get tickets for sat i will be there boxing day to watch killgallon look a fool! we are wolves!

I would love Mancienne to sign for us permanently, and convince his mate Scott Sinclair to aswell. To be honest it would do both their careers no end of good, and would be better than playing in Chelskis second team. Donny 0 Wolves 3! Looms ht

I hope we keep on winning, I doubt very much Donny will bring much resistance. Scott Sinclair would be a great addition to the squad as we need to be competitive on the flanks incase a tip in form from either Kites or Jarvis could make way for Sinclair to burn his speed from the bench. Big Chris has to start against Donny, not disrespect to AK but I feel Big Chris will be a wounded monster ready to batter Donny’s frail defence.

I think this one might me a tight one – i’m going for 0-1 with a goal by Vokes in the 68 min!!!

Donny are scrappers and need the points as much as us – even though they’re at home they’ll be pleased to get a point (hence my prediction)

Complacency is a disease that no team can afford to let set in. Any team in the Championship is a worthy opponent and should be treated with due respect.

Wolves had been consistent and hopefully the game against Doncaster will be another victory for the team.

    Forward the Wolves!

I can just feel it coming on! Mick has to turn out a team of first choicers, not just squad members.

Please don’t play Keogh, he will have a bad day as he has only had one bad game since he had a good one! His normal ratio is 1-3 (good and bad).

Can I just say if E&S use the phrase ‘gatecrashing’ with relation to Jarvis and the first team again following two previous articles this week, I am going to eat my shorts. What has ‘gatecrashing’ got to do with Jarvis getting his place back?!

Foley was superb going forward against Barnsley but he regularly got beaten by their left wing in the first half when playing a more defensive role. He’s a good player, but don’t over-hype the guy.

And while Wigan are a small club, you can’t argue that they’ve provided the Rat with premier league football every year since he left. They are a decent side.

I was at the Barnsley game as well. Think you have summed up the day very well and, when you come away with a 2-0 win when not firing on all four cylinders, it bodes well for the future. I have just rewatched the episode of ITV’s Glory Days sharing the two league cup final wins in the 70s/early 80s. It brought back so many memories as I went to both the games as a teenager. Happy days then and happy days now! Up the Wolves! And apologies to my son Jonathan, who still cringes when I scream out when we go to a game. LOL!

Good blog Nathan!! As always my mid morning (unofficial) break has been filled nicely!!

Just responding to some of the comments that we’re after Beckford from Leeds!! I really hope not cause we’ve got a full roster of strikers at the mo & we don’t need no more!! That’s how you can cause unnecessary unrest in the other forwards!!

What we do need is a big strong ball winning central midfielder!! I’m a Henry fan but you can see that he’s not consistent enough in games & the last few matches he’s not dominated enough!! The Blues game in particular; Carsley out muscled & out played both Henry & Jones!! & that’s exactly the type of player we now need to see us through the second part of the season!! What about Thomas Gravesen?? (I even here Incey has got a bit of spare time on his hands now lol)

Sinclair would be a positive signing to as we’ve still got no real cover for the likes of Jarvo & Kites!! Gray’s too old &, although I like Ward, he just doesn’t have the same impact on the wing like Jarvis!!

3-0 Saturday!! Big Chris back up front with 2 & SEB with 1!!

    Up The Wolves!!!

Would like big Chris to start and Jarvo to play at least 30 mins. Still can’t see Mancienne joining Wolves permanently but we can hope. We definitely need Scott Sinclair or Carlos Edwards as soon as possible and Beckford or Fryatt. It’s going to be all hands to the pump for the rest of the season and injuries/suspensions/loss of form are inevitable. Good luck on Saturday. Wolves will win, and as long as Reading don’t win it will be perfect.

While there is some merit to be said for the comments above saying we already have a host of strikers, there should always be space for a good “young’un”.

Talking of strikers – I note that the great Freddie has really set the world on fire at Coventry. 2 goals in 20 games. In seven or eight years he might score what SEB or Chris have scored in half a season.

Merry Christmas all from Tyre, Lebanon.

Wigan may be an established club, but they get worse attendances than the blues! Wigan is a rugby town and the football side is always going to be battling against regulation. What can he do there other than pick up more cash?

Of the 13 games played this season with a 3 o’clock kick off, we have won 11, drawn 1, lost 1, averaging 2.62 points (34 out of 39 available).

We have scored 33 goals and conceded 13. We have not failed to score in any of these games. Based on these statistics, I’m going for a 2-1 win.

    1) From the 70′s era, Dougan and Richards are a definite.
Back to the blog. I would not worry about the transfer window. The only player who may want to look elsewhere is Hennessey and I reckon Ikeme has been miles better in any case. As for Foley, I met him Ward and Collins in Sutton Coldfield the Sunday after the Cardiff game and they are modest and passionate about the club.
I have looked at our fixtures and with 2 or 3 signings in January, we should be able to get enough points to go up. Blues have a very tough fixture list over Christmas!

Nice blog. Blues have a difficult December as we know, but our January gives a ‘suck air through the teeth feeling’…. I forecast us pre season to finish with over 100 points. Still do. Re the January window! If Premier clubs are sniffing at the socks of a few of our players, hopefully it won’t have a psycological effect on their game which is possibility, however who knows. Upwards and Onwards Gold and Black. Merry Christmas And A Happy New Year to all the Wolves Fans Worldwide. Its going to be an interesting few months……
