Albion needed older heads – Mowbray

Wednesday 17th December 2008, 11:52AM GMT.

mowbray-pre.jpegAlbion boss Tony Mowbray has admitted he should have recruited more Premier League experience this summer.

The Baggies boss spoke of his regret at not landing more ‘old heads’ during his £20million-plus spending spree ahead of the season.

He admits he should have relaxed his principles to ensure more nous in his struggling side, who are without a win in 10 matches and rooted to the foot of the table.

Mowbray said: “This team lacks Premier League experience. It’s not just age, but nous. It’s about experienced defenders putting themselves in the right position.

“They may not be as young, as fast, as good with the ball but they stand there when the ball comes in and know their job.

“Premier League experience is something, which looking back on, we’ve probably missed. It goes against my philosophies and beliefs about to go and buy 33 or 34-year-olds, who have played 400 games in the League.

“Yet, when I look at things now, it’s probably crucial for promoted teams.”

Mowbray spent more than £20million strengthening his team in the summer, including a club record fee of £4.7million for Borja Valero and three more £3million-plus transfers.

But only Luke Moore, Scott Carson and Abdoulaye Meite boasted previous Premier League experience when they arrived in the close season.

Mowbray now admits the relative success of fellow Premier League new-boys Hull and Stoke has shown the value of experience.

He conceded: “The evidence is there. Hull have done it and Stoke have done it but they haven’t really paid transfer fees for those players.

“They have paid Premier League salaries for ageing players instead and their nous and experience had helped them.

“My own beliefs tell me if we stay up then we are only a few players from being a good team in this league.

“If we don’t then I don’t know what the aftermath would be. But we’d want to keep them together, come back stronger and know where we need to strengthen next time.”

As you are a manager who must have watched and studied previous teams who have gone into the premiership or any higher league for that matter wouldnt it be blindingly obvious that you need some players who know what their doing.

How refreshingly honest for a manager to admit his judgement was wrong. If we had beaten Blackburn, Wigan and Newcastle like we should have done, maybe he wouldnt be questioning his own judgement so harshly.
I still believe he is the right man for the job, not only for this season but hopefully for many years too come. He has brought a style that we havent seen for years. All he needs is a bit of experience, and a dose of good fortune.

TM admits he under estimated the value of experience; but this doesn’t answer the issue of who ‘should’ or better still ‘would’ have come in during the summer.

Many here seem to have joined La La and various Dingles in fantasy land. I question what response TM would’ve got if he had tried to get some of the players now at Hull or Stoke? Hindsight is a wonderful thing, eh?

BTW, Meite has PL experience. I believe this is the only type of PL experience available to a team like WBA. So, get real!

I’m sure Mr Mowbray knew this a long time ago but would it be good management to tell the players that he thought they were lacking? He failed to make some of the signings he wanted, probably due to our wage structure. Let’s all blame Peace then. Before you do this how many of you would be happy if ticket prices went up sharply. On a previous thread I’ve just saw Steve say ‘let’s all stay away and force Peace to sell up.’ Sell up to who? There’s no one out there.

I honestly believe he will get it right and make us into a club in which we can be proud of. Yes he has made mistakes, but at least he admits to them, learns from them and moves on….I go to every game and can honestly say that, apart from the big 4 (and Sunderland!!!) we could have got something out of all the other games. There are some arrogant so called WBA fans out there. These people clearly think they never make mistakes! It takes guts to admit when you’re wrong!

Its refreshing to hear a manager come out and say it. Tony has made mistakes and Albion have probems right now. But he’s an intelligent man and will learn from his first taste of Premiership football. We’d be crazy to sack him even if we’re easily relegated. He’s proven he can win promotion and instead of knee jerk reactions take a look at the long haul. This guy has shown ability and has more promise than most. I think we could deeply regret kicking him out a few years down the line.

I want us to stay up but taking desperate measures hoping a new manager can pull off a great escape is a bad move. We’ve been there before and after the honeymoon it ended in tears.

I would appeal to Jeremy Peace to back his manager and start providing the finance necessary to sustain premiership football.

Talking about the actual post, it is looking like he’s seen the error of his ways and is now trying to build up a squad strong enough to stay up this season. There’s still plenty of football to be played and time to put things right.

We need a real Spartan in the middle who can rally men around him to over achieve, and put everything on the line to stop up. That and a goalscorer are the real priorities, as well as some extra quality support!

Firstly, I trust no one is fooled by the recent “TM out” calls from wolfies in blue & white clothing who are trying to stir unrest. As per 37; I have not heard any proper albion fan call for TM to be sacked…including my old dad who’s pint is always half empty and never half full.
I personally believe in TM’s vision for the Albion even if we have to go down and come back up again to get it right, because re-building the clubs reputation for playing the game the way most players want to play is the only way Albion can realistically expect to attract the quality of players required for us to become a proper established Premier league club. Likewise, I hope JP continues to believe in TM’s vision, and will resist the alternative same old “experienced” names riding the same old managerial merry-go-round singing the same old songs to protect their job for the next season.
TM is different…i’m sure he is like us; he is Albion.

J.P runs a very tight reign within the club,so i don,t think it,s entirely ToMo,s fault we didn,t get the experienced players in,in the summer, although, having said that,I also think ToMo was at fault spending what he did have to spend,on mostly defenders, and players who were already on loan at the club, players who were signed mainly for our bid to get out of the Champs.league.I hope that makes sense?.

TM had a game plan – a game plan that made us agreat team in the CCC. We played great football, scored goals, won games and got promoted on his policy of finding young players he could work with.

That plan has been exposed as too fragile for the prem and TM has acknowleged that – but we had to get to this point to find out – there are too many playstation managers on here with the gift of hindsight.

I’m pretty sure TM has known for weeks what we need, but there is nothing he can do till January.

IMO we need not only a goal scorer (or 3) but also an organiser – not a kicker or a stopper, but someone who can marshall these young players on the pitch. Robbo should have been the man for this but its not worked.

Lets also remember than not only did we buy 3 players with prem experience, we also have robbo, Greening and Morrison – thats 6 players with prem experience – that SHOULD have been enough.

I still back TM to get things right -I just hope its this season.

Good post mate, would mostly agree with you on the comment about experience, as i’ve been saying all season on here – it is vital in the prem.

However, theres experience and theres EXPERIENCE, if you see what i mean. you mention morrison whose only had a handful of games for boro, likewise Greening who has also had (along with Robbo)a season battling relegation with us and Carson & Moore have limited experience only & are too young to have “been there done it”. Only Clement (currently long term injured)& Meitie have any prem knowledge worth shouting about and there my friend is where our problem is.

We need to get in 2 prem old heads in the window whatever the cost, stop-gap or permanent, it doesn’t matter, we need their knowhow and it will be worth it if we stay up. The other players (talented but looking a little lost at times)would respond to the new faces.

Villa fan myself but I do have a soft spot for the Baggies. I’ve always been pleased everytime you’ve come up cause I want to have your lot as the continuous derby game of the west midlands (forget the blue noses), our derby has history, our clubs have true histories to be proud of, we are the biggest teams in the midlands.

Anyway, at least Mowbray has recognised he needed experience, that he should have been thinking more about the here and now rather than the future, and generally the player you miss the most is Phillips (sorry to state obvious again guys).

He scored the goals of course, but what he also had was the intelligence and know how to be in the right place at the right time, to help your other strikers think in that way aswell. His experience and ability to link play up was crucial for Miller & Bednar last season (although I think Bednar is good enough myself anyway), and it has become apparent that you needed that to function as an attacking force.

So, I have a suggestion, you might think me crazy, but there is possibly one man who could almost restore all of those qualities to your side, and that player is Henrik Larsson.

He has experience, he’s a finisher, he has the know how, he has everything that Phillips had. Granted he’s a couple years older, but for the here and now, he would do a job till the end of the season. He would score goals for you i’m sure, since I believe it was your style of play which gave Phillips the rejuvenation of his career, and with those qualities he had back on the field of play in Larsson, you could begin to play the attacking way you can, particularly if you then combine this with having Teixeira back, you could do it, or at the very least, you do down fighting.

boy from the REAL bl 58 – yes i agree that we don’t have the right experience- but we only know that now.

The point i made was that TM started the season with 6 players who had all shown themselves able to play at this level – and |i’m sure he feels let down by these players – althought he would never say that (quite rightly), so its not true to say we started with a team of young unknowns.

One other point on the experience – we all knew it was going to be a scrap to stay up – so on paper i would rather have players that are used to that than prima donnas who are used to poncing about…. I thought Robbo and greening ect would have been ideal to fight to keep us up – but it aint worked out that way.

Stoke and hull have fighters who are performing – we have fighters who aint performing, and thats the difference.

77 – good post mate – you are obviously a true football fan. I think Larson would be a great loan for the rest of the season – although i think several teams better placed than us are looking at him too.

Another players i would welcome on loan is gary neville – I don’t think he’s getting many league games and his experience would be a huge bonus.

Oh and for all those posters who want to see an experienced striker brought in no matter what, i have two words…. John Hartson – who proves that experience aint always everything. (I was gonna put kevin campbell but Big John proves my point just as well).

From an ardent Wolves fan…..ive just been reading your posts (a rarity) and have my own thoughts on your predicament. After the stick the boys in gold n black got last season from the “majority” of baggies it would be so easy to come on here and take the p**s.
I wont..and through gritted teeth i wish you all the best in the prem in the new year.

For what its worth…id stick with your manager, relegation is probable but by no means a dead cert. This coming transfer window, i think, will seal your fate this season. TM has admitted hes got it wrong and now needs to somehow wheel and deal and bring in 2-3 proven strikers and atleast a midfield general/ leader type on a shoestring.
A tall order given the lack of finances, but not impossible.
I applaud TM for his footballing philosophy, but now is not the time for so called ineffective pretty football, he HAS to ditch his ideals and face upto a relegation scrap from now till the end of the season and get in some players that are up for the battle. Players for here and NOW and not for the future.
Now is not the time to turn on your boss and push him towards resigning or the sack. When the going gets tough as they say…
Now is the time to stick together, roll up the sleeves, dig in and scrap.

If your still rock bottom going into february then id certainly be worried, and it may be better THEN to plan for the future and life back in the championship.

Keep the faith in TM and see what happens in january.

Adi 86 – to be fair mate, the stck wolves got last season was 95% from wolves fans – although we did give you some, but we were in the same division then so it was fair enough.

Anyway, thanks for the decent post – and IF we do stay up it looks highly likely that the black country derby will be played at the highest level – is the rest of the world ready for that ??

Happy….yes ive got to agree on that, wolves fans are their own biggest critics for sure.
I wasnt one of Micks critics to be honest and i could see what was being built at molineux. It takes both time and patience and finishing 7th last season was progress and a reasonable position i thought.
Im just glad that the board stuck together, believed and showed faith in the manager.
The wolves are now reaping the rewards.

Id like nothing more than the black country derby gracing the premier league, though its still early days yet.
We could, god forbid, be both playing in the championship next season, i hope not!!

All the best and keep the faith.

You ain’t won it yet. You ain’t promoted yet. Have heard it all before from you lot. last time you went on about winning the league you finished 3rd and lost in the play offs. I think we finished 2nd. As for Mowbray vs Mad Mick. well the head to head has TM finnishing 4th and 1st while Mick was 5th and 7th so i reckon his championship record stands up very well.

When will the Dings accept that we are better than Wolves and have been for nearly a decade???

    77. I agree 100% about KP. Can someone explain why he wasnt given an extra year when his goals took us up? Peace? Never quick, he was an experienced finisher simple as that. I knew at the time it was a blunder to let our top scorer go and not replace him while going UP a division. How come management didnt?

I am fully behind Mowbray and our style of football – but fear we are going back down rapidly.
