Drivers queued for up to two hours along parts of the A41 Expressway in West Bromwich, with many giving up and cutting across the grass central reservation to find an alternative route.

Parts of Smethwick and West Bromwich were brought to a halt, and vehicles travelling near to the M6 junction in Wednesbury were at a standstill into the afternoon.

The roads were choked throughout the day following the accident yesterday when a lorry travelling north ploughed through the central reservation, overturning between Junction 7 at Great Barr and Junction 8 for the M5.

The northbound carriageway re-opened shortly after 3pm, but the southbound lanes remained shut until midnight. Commuters faced eight-mile tailbacks and major delays continued into the evening.
