Iwelumo could be rested
Friday 12th December 2008, 12:32PM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has hinted at wrapping top scorer Chris Iwelumo in cotton wool before the busy festive period.
The 15-goal marksman was left out of Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Derby with a slight ankle injury. McCarthy believes Iwelumo could benefit being left out for the clash with Barnsley – leaving Andy Keogh to continue to partner Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.
He said: “Chris has got a chance. He’s still got to prove his fitness, so we have to assess whether it’s sensible enough to involve him. But he won’t be involved if there’s any doubt.
“I think missing out might be a blessing for Chris because he does put a shift in. He might have to sit out and then come back fresher and stronger again.
“I’m not saying he’s tired or there’s anything wrong with him, but maybe a couple of games out might benefit him.”
McCarthy also insists that neither he nor his players are suffering from pressure.
Victory over Derby on Tuesday saw Wolves reach 50 points and McCarthy admits his side have exceeded expectations already.
He said: “Of course we have, because two points a game in this league gets you promoted. I think everyone’s desperate to put me under pressure. I get a bit miffed with people telling me how we should be feeling, it does my swede in.
“I don’t feel under as much pressure as the bottom three. Pressure is not doing as well as you want to do.”
As for his players, McCarthy insists their age means they aren’t feeling the strain.
He said: “Maybe they don’t know how they’re expected to feel. I remember being promoted with Barnsley in 1982. I was 23 and if someone asked me about pressure, I’d have said they were barmy.
“It was only afterwards that I thought ‘thank God for that’.”
McCarthy also believes the Hungarian influence could benefit Wolves.
A delegation including four players are over from Ujpest, pictured right, to discuss a link-up.
The manager said: “They’re playing tomorrow so we’ll see. I saw them play Tuesday and we hope it’s beneficial long term. It’s nice for them to be over and for us to look at their players to get a feel of what standard they are. It’s also interesting to exchange ideas.”

whats the point, i understand its a busy period but we need to win the games now. no good playin a weakened side against barnsley and slipping up. if they are fit they should play. he had a rest tuesday!! jarvis and iwelumo should both start and lets beat barnsley first!!

“it does my swede in” – is that a Barnsley term?

Unexpected substitutions taken into consideration – why not play Keogh first half and Vokes second half. Vokes has come so close to scoring with the pittance Mick is giving him on the field.
Give him 45+ minutes and he will score, he will score loads for us.
Come on You Wolves !

I agree with Mick, as for a weakened side? nonsense, we’ve got a pretty good depth of quality in our squad. It’ll do no harm resting Chris.
its a no brainer for me and i bet alot other fans if chris is fit he shud play simple, but its mick agen wanting to play his bum chums,i mean yeh u can say keogh played well the other nite but it was against the worst team ive seen play down here for a long time,u could get 2 double decker buses side by side through the gaps in there defence, and dont thinkk keogh will get better chances than he did that nite score i mean come on peps no most of you want to keep the good spirits up but face it keogh is not good enough, big chris to start but he want

Win a must! Take him off when we are 3 nil up after 20 minutes.

1. Stop playing Football Manager and come back into the real world, we’re top of the league thanks to Mick and the team… I for one trust in him, and so should everyone else! We’ve obviously developed a lot over the last few years since the dark days of hoddle….
It’s a ‘squad’ game, and we need to use everyone… you can’t seriously expect 11 players to play every game throughout the season… so keep the faith!!!

‘It does my swede in’ ….. is that a northern term?

LOOKS LIKE BIG CHRIS HAS BEEN LINED UP FOR THE SANTA VACANCY IN THE MANDER CENTRE THEN..LMAO

How can a team topping the table play a weakened side? Correct because if any team can afford to its us! When have the subs let us down this season? UP THE WOLVES!
If chris is 100% fit he will play.
If he aint he wont.
Makes perfect sense to me.

Mick playing his “chums” seems to have worked so far! You lot tickle me. Top of the table and still moaning. I reckon some people on here are itching for us to slip up just so you can moan about MAD MICK ! Sometimes you should read what you write and realise how stupid comments are and then think before writing again.

i think keogh deserves 2 keep his place and leave chris on the bench you dont want to dis hearten players wen the play well and drop them keeps the competiton healthy!!!!

I love your attitude no. 10 lets keep it positive. Im still believing and the rosary beads are back in the kitchen drawer for now.
Keogh has earned the right to start the next game regardless if Iwelumo is fit.
Doncaster is another matter though.
i think vokes desereves a start because he hasnt had 1 yet so i think you have to keep some height in the team ? because last game we didnt have much height in the box . i hate keogh but last game he had a gd 1 , but the thing tht i dnt get is why cant he finish like we know he can?
You should in my opinion always start with your strongest team and then rest players once the game is won.

Raffo (post 5), how do you expect people to take your argument seriously if you write like a teenage girl sending a text message?
Also, your correct that MM only plays his friends and not the team he feels who will perform best. That is why we are top of the league and have won 16 games already this season.
Getting to the top has been Wolves problem the last few years.Staying at the top is tougher.
Mick is going down the right path.Making sure a
player is fit is sound. We still have half the season to go yet. This has to figure into Mick’s
thinking.It fits into mine.

8 – “does my sweede in” is a northern term for does my head in……reet lad
Lets get the Vokes Wagon on the road for a game
Barmy Army!!!!!!!!!

Will all due respto barnsley. We should *Jinx* destroy them. And with a difficult january and sheffield united at home etc etc coming up. why not give same vokes or keogh a run around. Maybe SEB and keogh first half and vokes and iwelumo 2nd half.
Wolves should have a T shirt out with “Don’t be a nugget, put a shift in or else you’ll do my Swede in”. A guaranteed Christmas winner……..
Typo.. ignore my first sentence lol Was meant to be With all due respect to Barnsley.

What a load of rubbish,Keogh deserves to keep his place,,Keogh deserves to start..what a load of wasters. What has big Chriss done wrong to loose his place,he has been brilliant. Super mick and some of you wasters are messing with our side just to bring Keogh in..Keogh is rubbish.
I would play him, as there would be too much pressure on Ebanks-Blake to deliver, as Keogh can work hard and set chances up but struggles in front of goal. If Jarvis is not ready to start I would look at Hill and Jarvis again as Campbell-Ryce is a threat!
does my swede in well we have had a turnip down here, play iwelumo from the star if we are 2 nil up by half time take him off doesnt make sense to rest him when hes in the form that hes been in this season
Report abuse
Two points a match might not get us promotion this season, but one point more than the Blues or Reading surely will.We need to forget about points targets and make make sure we keep ahead of the other two.
haha there’s that classic line again “puts a shift in” I was going to make a point…but 24 has just summed up everything i was going to say very effectively!!!!!
number 24 well said least there is still normal fans out there

For those asking “Does My Swede In” is a well known Nordic / Scandinavian term.
Keogh’s work rate is good you cant fault that but you have to say that he isn’t a natural goalscorer. That the only question mark over his game.
If he put away all the chances he creates himself then he would be up there with Iwelumo and SEB,but he cant which is a shame.
It is a squad game nowadays with the hectic schedule,so rotating the squad now and again keeping our players fresh is a good thing.
For me i’d like to see Iwelumo & SEB to start tomorrow if both fit.
Iwelumo had his feet up in midweek so he should be fresh for tomorrow’s game.
Well, ‘Does my Swede in’ was a term my dad often used when I was a kid…and he was from Coseley, not Scandinavia lol. So it’s obviously just as common in the Black Country.
The term means yer ‘head’. Nuff said.
keep the same team & have iwelumo on the bench aswell as jarvis theres no need to rush players back against barnsley.
keogh 1st goal
Report abuse
Keogh doesn’t score goals? Vokes has missed some great chances while playing. Is anyone getting on his back? Keogh is a very intelligent player, he spreads the play, pulls defenders out and does all sorts to help his other strikers. Like it or not he’s a Wolves player and will continue to play. Booing and criticising him is going to be crap for the team as a whole.
