Bully hits back at Stafford axe
Friday 12th December 2008, 4:43PM GMT.
Steve Bull has launched an angry attack on the Stafford Rangers board who told him his managerial reign was over.
Crisis-hit Rangers told the Wolves legend he was not wanted because they could not afford to pay him any longer.
It’s the latest in a series of dramatic responses from the Marston Road chairman Jon Downing and his directors fighting to keep the club afloat amid a crippling financial crisis.
But it left Bull visibly shocked and distraught – and drew an angry response from the legendary goal-scorer, who was 10 months into his first managerial posting with Rangers.
He said: “I am absolutely gutted. I feel a mixture of emotions – from sadness to anger.
“Sadness for the way the players, the fans and the shareholders as well as myself have been, and still are being, treated by this Board and an anger towards the directors who think they can treat people in this way and who point the finger of blame at anyone and everyone apart from themselves.
“Maybe with the benefit of hindsight, I should have come out and said something sooner and not put up with the broken promises and late payments of moneys due to me and the players.
“But I’ve never been motivated solely by money and I really did want to stick around to help the club as best I could. Now I have been released from my shackles, however, I think it’s time to speak out in an effort to try to save this Club from going into oblivion.”
Bull reckons a slashed playing budget meant he was asked to secure a mid-table position for the season but he was then shocked to find Rangers directors demanding high achievement.
He added: “With such a mandate, I’m not quite sure why they expected over a thousand fans a week through the turnstiles.
“I don’t want to jump ship as I believe this Club could go places.”

It is a very sad reflection of what is happening in GB today. If Stafford Rangers go to the wall I don’t believe they will ever come back. Hopefully Bully will get another chance with a much more forward thinking club and I hope that the players who are released will be able to find other teams to take them on.

No 2 – What a great idea! Bully was always going to be up against it. I have seen the club struggle financially for years. They rely heavily on good cup runs and this year it hasn’t happened. I would say to Bully, many thanks for fighting almost impossible odds and if you think the club is worth saving then please come back and buy it, with or without help. Good luck.

Sorry to see you go Steve, maybe you can get a coaching role at the Wolves teaching the young strikers how to finish. I was just about to ring and ask for a trial as well. Guess there’s no point now eh lol

What a whinge, the fact is Steve you were a rubbish manager and the boring football your team put on show at Marston Road drove so many fans away that is why we are in trouble.
3 forwards but you only play one up front at home and we score just 3 goals at home one of those was an own goal thank you for trying but DON’T COME BACK stick to after dinner speaking.

Entirely agree with Old Man – Bull didn’t have a clue about management, player motivation, tactics – in fact anything needed to turn the club round. He was in it for himself from the start – the only surprise is that it took the board so long to get rid of him.
