Slade shine in homecoming gig

Thursday 11th December 2008, 11:41AM GMT.

slade.jpegLegendary Black Country rockers Slade made hundreds of fans Feel the Noize when they returned to Wolverhampton for a homecoming gig.

Flamboyant guitarist Dave Hill took centre stage as the band, made up of half the original line-up, belted out their biggest hits in front of more than 550 people at Bilston’s Robin 2 club last night.

Creating an electric atmosphere in the intimate setting of the music venue, the band rocked the stage by displaying the type of energy that belies the ages of these band members, one of whom – Don Powell – is three years away from being a pensioner.

Before the show Dave Hill, who grew up on the Warstones estate in Penn, told the Express & Star Wolverhampton was “a very special place” to perform because “it was where it all started for the band.”

Wearing glittery black suit jackets and white and black trousers they belted out classics including Coz I Luv You, Take Me Bak ’Ome, and Merry Christmas Everybody.

In between each numbers Hill shouted out things like “It’s good to be in Bilston”.

Keith Chater, aged 48, of Cornwall, said: “ I’ve got a tattoo of them on my arm. All the songs are superb.”

Saw them and thought they were poor without Noddy and Jim. The two remaining members are far less talented than Jim and Nod – also should they really be able to call themselves Slade – a bit misleading

Dear, Mr.Duke! It’s almost 20 year’s since Nod and Jim decided to leave the band. And offcourse, the band was never to be the same again.BUT,Dave and Don still delivers the fantastic music of Slade and they still have that same old energy. They really KICK ASS while on stage,as they’ve done for over 40 years!! Hardcore Slade fans are devided in their opinion on wether to like or dislike today’s Slade…Dave and Don is 2 founder members of the band and they’ve got the right to call themself “Slade” (used to be “Slade II”,but they left out the II’s many years ago).I’ve seen the original line up and the various line up since 1992 and offcourse I miss Nod and Jim…but, they haven’t been there for nearly 20 years! So,KEEP ON ROCKING, Dave & Don and all you Slade nutters!!!

Mansour. If they can only a pull a 550 crowd in their old stomping ground. The chance of a promotor splashing the cash for a Australian tour are slim to none. Which is too bad. I’m an Ex Pat from Wolverhampton. And I like nothing more this time of year. Than gettimg out my Christmas Compilation CD (purchesd from soon to be gone Woolies in the Mander Centre)and cranking up “Merry Christmas Everybody”.
