Extra training to boost goals tally

Midfielder James Morrison today revealed how he and striker Roman Bednar have asked to stay behind after training in a bid to discover their Premier League goalscoring touch.

And Morrison is hoping that the extra work will help the Baggies cope with the loss of Ishmael Miller for the rest of the season with cruciate knee ligament damage.

“Goals win you matches,” said Morrison. “If you look at the last few games, we’ve had chances and we just need to finish them.

“After training yesterday me and Roman stayed behind trying to put the ball in the back of the net. We are working hard on it and hopefully what we did in practice will come into the game.

“The belief is still there in the lads because we do dominate teams. I always try to improve my game. I’ve had chances in the past but not put them away and that could be the difference between winning and losing.

“I’m trying to put that right and hopefully it will pay off.”

Morrison is looking to add to his one goal this season by finding the net against troubled Sunderland on Saturday.

And the Darlington-born former Middlesbrough youngster is looking forward to his latest return to his native north east.

“The Sunderland game is massive,” said Morrison. “The gap is getting bigger so it is a must-win game really. It’s great to back up to the North-East. All my friends and family will come and watch.

“We got a win at Middlesbrough and put in a good performance at Newcastle. It’s all about winning now. We’ve been putting in good performances but not collecting the three points.

“We need to learn how to win a bit better in this league. It would be nice to go back up north and put one past Sunderland.”

Albion will head to Wearside with manager Tony Mowbray still narrowing down his January transfer hitlist.

But, while he admitted new faces could provide a boost at The Hawthorns, Morrison said the players would stay out of the transfer debate.

“That’s up to the manager and the chairman,” he said. “We’ve got a good squad and there is still a lot of banter flying about.

“Maybe January could lift us. It’s not my job to pick who comes in or out.

“Hopefully the manager knows what he needs and gets it.”
