Gang leader gets asbo for abuse

Friday 5th December 2008, 11:43AM GMT.

A 13-year-old Black Country girl gang leader who terrorised people by spitting, shouting abuse and swearing has been given a two-year anti-social behaviour order.

The Express & Star can name Nicole Brissette but Wolverhampton magistrates banned publishing her photograph amid concern it would pose a risk to her welfare. They gave permission for police to show her image to people in Penn Fields, Wolverhampton, but prevented publiication elsewhere. Brissette was banned from the streets for two years.

The teenager, of Dale Street, Graiseley, was banned from entering Lime Street, Bristol Street, Fisher Street, Ashton Street, Dalton Street and Bingley Street unless accompanied by an adult for two years after receiving an antisocial behaviour order (Asbo).

She will also only be allowed to see her cousin, Tashama Maitland, in public when an adult is present and must keep away from Elizabeth Hickenbottom.

Police won the right to publish Brissette’s name and photograph in leaflets so Penn Fields people would know where she was not allowed to be.

Miss Jennifer Dean, prosecuting, said people needed to see what she looked like so that they could identify her.

She said: “Some witnesses have referred to her as the leader of the gang, the girl with the gap in her front teeth, but did not know her name. She is 13 years of age but over the past few years has been acting in an antisocial manner, being verbally abusive to members of the public and running up and down the streets.”

Mr Jon Roe, defending, said: “She disputes many of the allegations but accepts that staying away from these streets will help.

“If she is named and shamed her problems may follow her. It will impact greatly on her life in areas she may move to in future.”

Imposing a ban so the Express & Star from publishing the photograph chairman of the bench Mrs Gerry Brookes said: “We want to look after her but people have the right to know who she is.”

Pc Tim Baker said the streets ban would mean a great deal to people affected.
