One in five smoke in pregnancy

smokes.jpgNearly 20 per cent of women in one Black Country borough smoke during pregnancy, figures show.

Out of the 3,173 women having a baby, 560 of them – 17 per cent – were known to have been smoking before going into labour.

The figures were obtained in Sandwell between January and September this year. Women who light up while expecting are told that it can cause serious problems including complications during labour, an increased risk of miscarriage and even bring on a premature birth.

According to figures released by Sandwell Primary Care Trust (PCT) today, there were 1,095 births between January and March this year, with 185 of the mothers having a smoking habit at the time they went into labour.

Then between April and June this year, there were 1,034 women giving birth, 186 of whom were smokers.

Between July and September this year, there were 1,043 women giving birth, with 189 smoking beforehand.

Sandwell PCT runs health services in the area and says that it does all it can to encourage women to kick the habit while they are pregnant.

Joanne Luxmore, tobacco control lead at Sandwell PCT, said: “Sandwell smoking services are more than happy to help women give up smoking before and during pregnancy.

“We do have a smoking-in-pregnancy officer to help them.”

Help is also offered to those who may be thinking of starting a family and family members who wish to quit at the same time.

The stop smoking and pregnancy team work together with stop-smoking trained hospital and community-based midwives and health visitors.

Offers of help are based on motivation, along with the use of nicotine replacement therapy.

In 2006 in neighbouring Wolverhampton, there were about 3,100 babies born in the city, and 23 per cent of their mothers smoked throughout pregnancy.

I quit smoking four and a half yrs ago in the hope that it would help me to get pregnant. No such luck but what annoys me is when I see or hear of pregnant women smoking right up until the birth, it digusts me! Do they know how lucky they are to have gotten pregnant in the first place? I know of a few women who smoked throughout the pregnancy but refused to drink alcohol, how hypocritical is that! I personally think smoking in pregnancy is far worse than the odd drink (in moderation) I would even go as far to say that the odd pint of Guinness would be less harmful to a baby than a cigarette!!!!!

WHEN MY DAUGHTER WAS PREGNANT(SHE HAS NEVER SMOKED) I WAS TOLD BY A MEMBER OF STAFF AT THE LOCAL MATERNITY UNIT THAT YOUNG FIRST TIME MOTHERS WERE SMOKING UP TO THE BIRTH IN ORDER TO HAVE LOW WEIGHT BABIES THEREFORE EASIER BIRTHS. AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED THIS IS CHILD ABUSE AND SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO. ALTHOUGH THIS WAS 4 YEARS AGO I HAVE NEVER FORGOTTEN IT . THANK GOD FOR MY HEALTHY GRANDSON AND HIS TWO WONDERFUL,RESPONSIBLE, PARENTS

Agree with Shelley, shame you still have not managed to have the baby you want, 39 years ago when I gave birth in Portland House, Wednesbury, the ‘Matron’ advised husband to bring a bottle of Stout in, it is actually good for you. Smoking is a disgusting habit, yes I am an ex smoker!! gave it up when they got to 50p per pky of 20 could not afford it any longer. How people afford to smoke these day’s beggers belief and I must admit to hating it… to smoke whilst pregnant, well hope they can live with themselves………
