Vokes has hotshot duo in sights

charlton-second-goal.jpegWolves dangerman-in-waiting Sam Vokes insists he is ready to take his chance to break up the Championship’s most prolific duo.

The 19-year-old wasn’t included in the squad for the lunchtime reserve friendly against Port Vale at Compton, which was called off due to a frozen pitch.

Jody Craddock, Matt Jarvis and Lewis Gobern were due to continue their comebacks in the cancelled fixture.

But Vokes is still hoping to build on another impressive showing, coming off the bench in the 1-1 draw against Birmingham.

The Welsh international twice went close to scoring for the second successive home game and is eagerly waiting in the wings, with 15-goal hotshot Chris Iwelumo one booking away from a ban.

Vokes said: “I don’t want to wish another booking on Chris but there are a lot of games coming up over Christmas. Anything can happen in that time, so it’s just up to me to keep myself fit and make sure I’m ready if the gaffer calls on me.

“The boys up front have been doing so well you have to be patient and I’m just happy to get a chance when I can. Coming on for big ‘Lumes’ in a big game like Birmingham was a great challenge for me.”

Vokes, who has three goals as a substitute, thought he had added to that tally against Birmingham at the weekend.

He said: “I thought I put myself about a bit and did reasonably well. For a moment I thought I might have got the winner but Maik Taylor made a good save.

“I’ve had a couple of chances now in the last couple of home games but I’m still waiting for my first Molineux goal. It’s always nice to get your first goal at home when you move to a new club.

“I’ve managed to get a few away from home which has taken the pressure off but it would be good to get one at Molineux. Hopefully there’s one on its way.”

“The occasion was massive with a superb atmosphere and it was just great for me to be involved in. To come in and just get a chance to play at some stage of those games is something that can only help me.

“I’m still learning new things every day. It’s just about taking those things on board and putting them into action when I get the chance.”

Vokes did play well when he came on. A better bet than AK to change a game.
