Mullen down to just 15 players

Tuesday 2nd December 2008, 11:33AM GMT.

mullen.jpegWalsall manager Jimmy Mullen will be handling his squad with kid gloves this month with his squad stretched to the limit.

Following the 2-1 win over Swindon Town at the weekend, the Saddlers could be down to just 15 senior players for the trip to Huddersfield on Saturday.

Ten-goal top scorer Michael Ricketts is a major doubt with a groin injury, Clayton Ince is definitely out, with Dwayne Mattis and Stephen Roberts also struggling with their respective back and groin aliments.

Mullen, who was thwarted in his attempts to sign a Championship defender before the loan deadline, is frustrated about the continuing catalogue of injuries.

He said: “When I get a team who wins a game, I would love to say same again. But when you have injuries and suspensions I have to change it and I don’t like doing it.

“I am not the type of manager who likes to change things for the sake of it, but every time I have been forced to do a lot of things.”

Mullen rested Richard Taundry on Saturday as he tries to protect his midfielder from burn out.

He said: “As a youngster it is sometimes good to bring him out and then let them have a look in. He never lets you down. He is only 19, it is a lot to expect and he has started every game so far.”

Striker Jabo Ibehre should return for the game at the Galpharm Stadium after a three week absence through injury and suspensio.

He could bolster his match fitness when the reserves entertain Oldham Athletic (7pm).

    who’s fault is that.

we have had months of knowing the squad is to small.

    Clueless!

Don’t worry, Bonser/Whalley will soon come and say that because of dwindling crowds we can’t have a bigger squad and its all our own fault. Ignoring the £1k/day we have to pay to play on our own ground.
Ignoring the fact that the squad was evidently too small before we’d even kicked a ball in anger this season when they had no knowledge of how disenchanted fans would be.

Maybe if they’d shown the ambition in the summer and built a ‘squad’ then those fans wouldn’t have walked away!

We know Mullen does not like to change the team – hence the reason why some of our players Weston and Reich have hardly started a game.

As for the small squad well I think the club have been a little short sighted thinking the squad was big enough or are they living in cloud …….

joke. for months it was obvious if we had a bad run of injuries & suspensions we would struggle. now he’s moaning that he doesn’t have any players fit. too little too late mr mullen. should’ve planned for that in the summer rather than selling cars

    New lamps for old.

    Jimmy Mullet is absolutely clueless.
He has let his players down.
He has let the fans down.
He has let the town down.

    Mullet do the honourable thing…RESIGN.
