Great Escape could happen again

Tuesday 2nd December 2008, 2:48PM GMT.

greening.jpegAlbion skipper Jonathan Greening has claimed a second “Great Escape” is possible and insists this year’s team are better than Bryan Robson’s famous side.

Tony Mowbray’s men have three matches to lift themselves off the foot of the Premier League before Christmas.

Greening, who was part of Robson’s side, is adamant they can still survive, even if they head to Chelsea on Boxing Day in bottom spot.

He said: “We were the first team at the bottom at Christmas to stay up at the end. We know it can be done. We’ve got the players to do that and we’re playing better football this time than we did then.

“Why can’t we do it? We need a little bit of luck, a few things to go our way and hopefully that can start soon.”

Greening has told Baggies supporters they have a vital role to play in helping the team turn around their eight-match winless run, starting at home to Portsmouth on Sunday.

He said: “The fans have been brilliant and always supported us well since I have been here. It’s my fifth season, I have had one relegation and a promotion push.

“They have always been great whether we have been winning, losing or drawing. We need them to keep believing in us and cheering us on as they have been.

“Performances haven’t been too bad. We just need to get the results right by cutting out sloppy mistakes.

“You just have to keep your chin up and go again. We all believe in the gaffer and in each other. We need to stay strong as a team and look ahead to the next game.

“It is deflating when you play well, have so many chances and don’t get anything out of it but we just have to believe in what we’re doing.

“Everyone feels a bit deflated. We need to bounce back with a good week’s training and try to come back against Portsmouth.”

Looking ahead, Albion have cut ticket prices for the Hawthorns fixture with Sunderland.

The April 25 clash has been downgraded from a Category A match to a Category B game, offering adult supporters who buy a match ticket for this game a saving of £15, while concessions can save £10.

Match tickets in all four stands for this Premier League game will now cost £25 adults, £15 seniors/Under-18s/students and £10 juniors (Under-16s).

Albion will also be offering away supporters free coach travel for the league trip to Hull City on January 31.

We are much better than Robbo’s team, so looking at that we SHOULD stay up…….for some reason I still think we will do it!!

There’s a long way to go, and a lot of football to be played.

    The great escape

Need to sign McQueen,Garner,Bronson, and Pleasence.
will need at least £25million to get these and it may be impossible to get some of them to sign

Looks like the championship is beckoning

If that lot stay up and Wolves go up…great, a Black Country derby in the Premiership at long, long last. Cor wait!

If the Boggies go down and we go up, fine, that’ll do for me.

If the Boggies go down and we stay down…it’s “game on” next season. That’ll do for me, too.

If the Boggies stay up and we stay down, we’ll just have to wait a bit longer for the old, tribal war to recommence.

Three scenarios out of four aint bad, I guess. Good luck in trying to escape the jaws of relegation death -but only for our sakes.

I reckon even a blind Donald Pleasance could have put away three of our chances against Wigan. Tee Hee!

It shows how low we have become if we have to compare this team with Robson’s of the Great Escape.Robson was very lucky to have survived the Great Escape, its looks as if we will have to rely on luck again to avoid being relegated. Why do you think Robson had the sack, it was because we couldn’t score goals the same as present day.One manager has had the sack today for not getting results, there maybe anther one after christmas, J-P will not be pleased to be fighting another Great Escape
