Homes plan at Shane tragedy pool

A total of 50 new homes could be built around the Bilston pool where teenager Shane Owoo was tortured and killed, it was revealed today.

Parkhill Estates has unveiled multi-million pound plans for a housing development overlooking Baileys Pool, which was plunged into the national spotlight following the 16-year-old’s killing last year. Community groups have held meetings about the site since the tragedy and are also planning bids for environment grants so the pool can become a haven for anglers.

Ann Nightingale, chairwoman of Lunt tenants’ and residents’ association, who is spearheading the campaign for the pool’s transformation, said today: “The owners of the site want to create 50 new homes and make the pool a focal point.

“At the moment the houses near to the pool all face away from it so they want to create the new development looking over it and towards it.

“We really want to see something done at the pool and put the things that have happened in the past.

“As well as the housing development we are also hoping to get environment grants so we can put in fishing platforms and really clean it up so it can become a haven for anglers and a real leisure attraction.”

Weak swimmer Shane was frogmarched into the pool in September last year after being pelted with stones and thrown into nettles over a row about a mountain bike.

Christopher Lewis and Marvin Walker, who pun-ched the youngster and laughed as he floundered in the water, were initially sentenced to five-and-a-half years after admitting mans-laughter.

But both Lewis, aged 23, of Russell Road, St Chad’s estate, and Walker, 21, of no fixed abode, later had their sentences increased to seven-and-a-half years at the Court of Appeal.

Week ago Shane’s family and friends joined members of the community, councillors and MPs to spruce up the site to mark the one year anniversary of his death.

The group cleared the area and laid a floral tribute to the teenager as part of the event.
