Defender says no to Saddlers

dons12.jpegJimmy Mullen is facing a defensive headache as he revealed Walsall failed in a last-ditch bid to bolster their backline.

A Championship defender Mullen had been chasing rejected a loan move to the Banks’s Stadium at the last minute.

The Saddlers boss was desperate to bolster his stretched squad at the back but the unnamed player turned them down on loan deadline day on Thursday.

The failure to snare the player was compounded by Stephen Roberts limping out with a reoccurrence of his groin injury in the 2-1 win over Swindon and the centre back is a doubt for Saturday’s trip to Huddersfield.

Mullen said: “We were very, very close, for the want of a better word. Maybe the player didn’t fancy dropping down to this level.

“He would have improved us without a doubt because he could have played in two positions. He has been in and out of his side but didn’t want to drop down.”

Uncertainty surrounds Michael Ricketts’ fitness with the 10-goal top scorer suffering a groin injury against the Robins.

But Mullen’s deadline day signing, goalkeeper Albin Kajtezovic, should play in the reserves’ home game with Oldham tomorrow.

He was signed as back up for Rene Gilmartin, who produced a man of the match performance as he deputises for the injured Clayton Ince.

“I am delighted to be out there and showing the fans what I can do,” he said.

“I have been here a long time and they have been obviously wondering what the story is with me.

“We won in front of the home fans and answered a lot of critics.”

How about we try signing a player who plays in ONE position and doesn’t have to worry about what position he’s going to be stuck in from one week to the next!!

Should look for 2 central defenders and sign the loan keeper up full time as both Ince and Gerrard will be gone in January.

Choose the right team Mullen and the team will win – left wing and a left back playing on the left – not up front or in goal ! Still rubbish second half

I thought reich was fantastic on saturday, he has no pace but somehow beats his man, spoke to a rams fan at work today and he apparently looked good with them as well.

Think we need 2 center halfs and someone in the midfield who can free nicholls and deeney to play up top as neither of them IMO look much cop wide.

Johnny Dukes i couldnt agree more with you. Your the first person i have heard talk any sense. The worrying thing is that Mullen hasnt even offered reich a new deal and his is up at christmas. Mullen is a joke!!

I agree with Don H about Reich. Unfortunately Jimmy Mullen does not have a clue about the value of a specialist wide man. When Ricketts was injured he should have left Reich alone and put Nicholls in the middle. Nicholls is no good on the wing, and Reich is no good in the middle. Everyone at Walsall knows this, apart from Jimmy Muddle.

I think we shud play taundry in goal , ricketts at right back jabo at left back, and give free’s to bradley , reich, and weston , that’ll sort it
    out Jimmy.

Think Jims got an aversion to wings after he discovered they go rusty and lower the value

Should have brought players in well before the dead line, but no has to wait until the last minute…. only got himself to blame. Sorry no time for him as a manager get him OUT.

More dealine day excuses….club has learned nothing. Remember JB sayng, ‘we won’t get caught in that situation again’, after we sold Fox & Dann…….well JB you got caught out again and January is coming round again!………..
    Third time lucky eh?
Failing to plan is planning to fail JB!

Just like to say well done Rene Gilmartin! He had one or two howlers when he’s played over the last couple of seasons, but is now showing some improvement and without him we wouldn’t have won on Saturday!

It was fairly obvious this was going to happen. The Express and Dingle reported that Mullen was talking to managers about two players but presumably if they are any good then other clubs (many of which are more attractive than us) would also be interested. Mullen (and, to be fair, Money before him) assumes that if he wants a player that man will sign.
