Pensioners forced out by vandals
Saturday 29th November 2008, 11:33AM GMT.
A pensioners’ club in the Black Country is set to be moved to a temporary new home after vandals cut off the water supply at their 100-year-old base.
The heating at the Sons of Rest club in Victoria Park, Smethwick, has also failed. Vandals ran riot in nearby changing rooms and damaged the water pipes that run through them. Now council chiefs say they are looking for a new base for the club while repair work is carried out.
Councillor Linda Horton, cabinet member for culture and leisure at Sandwell Council, condemned the attack – the latest in a long line of vandalism at the club, which was built in the early 1900s. “The problem has been caused by the wanton vandalism of the nearby changing facilities in the park,” she said.
“The water supply is routed through the changing facilities before then going to the facility for retired people. Previous attempts to resolve this matter have met with further vandalism to the changing facilities, causing more damage and flooding.
“This means the water supply must be traced back to the mains and the feed directly routed to the facility for retired people.
“Officers will be visiting the group to look into relocating them for their meetings on a temporary basis until the matter is resolved.
“We will be carrying out necessary works to resolve the problem as soon as possible.”
Earlier this year Sandwell Council looked at closing three Sons of Rest clubs in the borough and asking another four to meet their own running costs.
But the Smethwick club has been popular for decades, so council chiefs said they could continue but consider the building for additional uses.
The clubs under threat were saved after members told how important the clubs were to them.
