Gianni happy to win ugly

zuiverloon.jpegAlbion defender Gianni Zuiverloon has urged the Baggies to put points before performances to haul themselves off the foot of the Premier League.

The £3.2m Dutchman says Tony Mowbray’s men must collect points from the crucial next four matches – even if it means ‘winning ugly’.

Albion face vital meetings with Wigan, Portsmouth, Sunderland and Manchester City before travelling to Chelsea on Boxing Day.

Zuiverloon said: “The next four games are really important. We have to start winning games no matter what and it doesn’t matter how. We don’t have to play beautiful football, it’s just about taking the points and that’s it.”

The full-back does insist the Baggies will never resort to the route one tactics that Stoke employed to defeat them at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday.

He said: “I don’t think we have the players to play that kind of football. Stoke have a lot of big players that can head the ball. We only have Ishmael and Roman, they are the only two big players in the team.

“We don’t have the team to play like Stoke. We have to play our own game and that’s pass, pass, pass.”

Zuiverloon, who will line up against friend Daniel De Ridder when the Baggies face Wigan, insisted there is no panic setting in, despite Albion’s record of one point from the last seven matches.

The Holland U21 international said: “I think the alarm will ring if the gap is too big between us and 15th place. It’s still tight and we only need to win two games to push up the table.

“I think we have the team to play in the Premier League and win games. We just need to stay confident and play well. I’m a little bit surprised to be in this position.

“We’ve had a few tough games against Liverpool and Chelsea, that were games where the chances of losing were pretty high.  We should be taking points against Stoke and other teams like that.”
