Pensioners hit hardest in cuts
Thursday 27th November 2008, 11:42AM GMT.
Pensioners across Wolverhampton look set to be among the hardest hit by the range of cuts across the city.
Care home Underhill House in Bushbury is earmarked for closure under the unprecedented cutbacks, council chiefs have revealed.
Hot meals at lunchtimes are set to be withdrawn from Albert Road Day Centre in Park Dale, and Shopmobility hourly charge will double to £1.
The council’s chief executive Richard Carr today said residents and council workers should not panic about the scale of the cuts.
He said: “We are informing the staff and consulting with them during the day and I think it’s inevitable that some of them may be concerned.
“We are not immune from the pressures every authority is facing, and for a while now we have been committed to driving out efficiencies.
“We are ok for this year, but over the following two years we need to make savings of more than £40 million and this plan is something we have been working on for a while.
A report going to the cabinet on Wednesday will then be referred to the watchdog-style scrutiny panel for examination, before they are expected to be rubber-stamped.
The unions were informed about it yesterday evening and told the Express & Star it was a “kick in the teeth” to be facing more job losses.
The 300 job cuts announced in September will affect IT, finance, human resources and procurement but the extra 150 taking place from next May onwards could come from anywhere.
Councillor Roger Lawrence, leader of the city’s Labour group said: “There has been no attempt at cross-party consultation on these issues.”
