Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Sheff Utd 1 Wolves 3 – analysis
Wednesday 26th November 2008, 10:07AM GMT.
Steve Morgan last night celebrated his 56th birthday shivering in the cold of Bramall Lane.
But you know Wolves’ multi-millionaire owner would not have wanted to be anywhere else in the world.
Even in these hard-pressed days, Morgan could doubtless have afforded to pass his big day in any number of glamourous hot-spots dotted around the globe.
Click here to see more pictures.
But then he would have missed his team continue their remorseless quest for promotion with a potent mix of character and quality to douse the flames flickering from Sheffield United’s fiery challenge.
Defending perfectly suited for the Championship was combined with finishing perfectly suited to the Premier League and the Blades, a team which had only conceded four goals at home all season, were confounded by three wonderful strikes flying past Paddy Kenny.
Yes, Wolves got the breaks of a team which just cannot stop winning, most notably when referee Graham Laws and his officials failed to spot a 49th minute inswinging corner from Brian Howard swerve over the line before being cleared.
That could have levelled the game at 1-1 and possibly changed the course of the contest.
But you have to earn those breaks and no-one could quibble Wolves did just that. One broken nose, one concussion, a bruised hip and gashed shin and a strained calf muscle were being treated in the visitors’ dressing room by the time it was all over, a legacy of the highly-physical and largely aerial assault that rained down on Wolves throughout.
The rewards, though, were hugely satisfying. Their six point lead at the top was retained but, more importantly, the distance between automatic promotion and the play-off line was stretched to a dozen points.
No one, least of all manager Mick McCarthy, would claim this team is anything more yet than a thrusting young Championship outfit motoring along with conviction and menacing goal power.
But they are once more following the trail of their ancestral legends. For the second time this season they will endeavour to match the club record eight wins in a row but no Wolves team has ever put together two seven-game winning streaks in a season before now.
Cullis’s 1957-58 league champions managed six-in-a-row twice but that is the measure of this campaign of wonderful opportunity Wolves have carved for themselves.
Overseeing it all, McCarthy is the last man to get caught up in such statistical pleasantries even if, a year from being told by Molineux that he didn’t know what he was doing, he is once more “Super Mick McCarthy,” as the 2,000 travelling fans hailed him last night.
With all three substitutions forced on him by half-time, McCarthy was for once more inconvenienced by the game’s demands than the crutches still required as he recovers from ankle surgery.
But whatever else awaits him this season, the award for Best Performance by a Manager on One Leg is a cinch. A concussed Dave Edwards went after 16 minutes, a bruised and cut Carl Ikeme collapsed after 40 and Dave Jones only just made it to half-time.
It was testament to his squad’s depth that Wolves still had manpower of sufficient quality to hold off the Blades before completing their execution with two more peachy goals to add to their opening effort inside five minutes.
Oh yes, those goals. No matter how many more ‘highs’ this season brings, it is impossible to imagine the team conjuring a better collection than this triplet.
The first two went to Chris Iwelumo, who passed the ball through the eye of the needle for his first (the best) and then drove home a volley of crushing certainty.
When the Scots see the highlights, the pressure on Glasgow Police to step-up their search for the imposter who missed from two yards against Norway will surely increase. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake added the third, smashed past a helpless Kenny with customary power, and ensured that Matthew Spring’s first goal for the Blades 15 minutes from time was more inconvenient than damaging.
But how Wolves had to work to establish those match-winning moments.
Iwelumo, who was worth his £400,000 fee for this one performance alone, had given Wolves comfort with his opening goal after four minutes 25 seconds when Ebanks-Blake gathered possession and gave Michael Kightly the chance to thread through a cutting pass.
The striker had enough to get in front of Chris Morgan, take the ball around Kenny and then defy both the acute angle and Blades’ retreating cover to slide rule a shot into the opposite corner.
First strike achieved it was time to strap on the flak jackets as United, seeking out James Beattie’s aerial prowess with similar accuracy, flew at the leaders in what seemed like a rage of indignation over this early concession.
Ikeme responded with two brave and alert saves, at the feet of Billy Sharp and then Beattie, but produced his best effort just when it seemed Wolves must crack under the weight of the home team’s aerial barrage after 36 minutes.
He somehow reached a point-blank volley from Matthew Kilgallon with an outstretched left arm – a remarkable save executed with such strength from his left hand the ball ricocheted out for a throw-in.
But, by the break,Wayne Hennessey was back on his old patrol after his junior partner had given in to shin and thigh injuries and he would be at the centre of the game’s most controversial moment, punching clear that Howard corner as he struggled to get through the ‘traffic’ in front of him on 49 minutes.
Was it over the line? It certainly looked like it and United claimed replays confirmed that. Imagine their fury, then, when Wolves responded to the escape with two killer goals in the 59th and 63rd minutes.
In common with his chairman, captain Karl Henry is celebrating a birthday, his 26th today, and provided the set-up for the Iwelumo volley with a surging run past United’s last line of defence. His beautifully-weighted clipped cross his centre forward devoured with relish.
Then it was back to the Iwelumo-Kightly-Ebanks-Blake combo for the third, Kightly enjoying a rare opportunity to run with freedom and set up his partner.
United fling the ball into the area so often that it was inevitable that one knock-down would eventually fall their way for Spring to sweep home their solitary response but, in truth, it all petered out a little even if Neill Collins and Morgan each planted set-piece headers on to the woodwork.

The best win of the season by a country mile. I keep pinching myself to check that i’m not just dreaming all this. Are we really on 46 points from just 19 games ??

Like most Wolves fans at the moment I am in a happy daze……………happy days?
Wonderful absolutely wonderful!
If and more than likely when we go through another sticky patch (every team will), please keep your ‘muppet mick’ and similar comments confined to your tiny minds…….you know who you are!
This is the best I have seen from the Wolves in well over 20 years……am I dreaming?

It was a fantastic performance. Great result. Any news on Matt Murray? Regardless what the injury to Matt is… saturday match needs to be dedicated to Matt as he is a legend! Rotten luck of injuries to a great bloke!
Iwelumo is on fire!! Both his goal were top draw! Loved his thumping volley! Fantastic result. I didn’t expect 3 points from Bramall Lane but they are very welcome!!
Bring on the Brummies! Just need to keep our Nemesis , Kevin Phillips, in check and hopefully extend our lead at the top!
WE ARE TOP THE LEAGUE!! :-D
Report abuse
Would Carl Ikeme please stand up and take a bow well done fella
Report abuse
A brilliant result. Us Wolves fans can never get too cocky but from this position the play offs are more or less a certainty and for automatic we only have to win one in two.
My concern for the game against one of my two disliked clubs from down the road is believe it or not Hennessey. His presence off the line will be needed on Saturday and I believe his confidence is shot a bit. The other dilemma is who do we play on the left and unluckily for Collins, Mancienne is a must.
Wolves 3 Blues 1 !

Congratulations guys and a heartfelt thanks for all the good work down at the Mol these days. Proud to be a Wolves fan again

my 3-1 prediction has paid for my Christmas presents so i’m a happy chap.
Oh and the fact that we’re going up and passing the albion on the way down!
Well done Ikeme last night – where are all his knockers now ? Some of the stick he took after Watford away & generally during the Hennessey / Ikeme debate was ridiculous.
And can people please stop the Collins and Ward knocking as well ?? What have these boys got to do to get a break off some of our lot ? Sounds like we were bombarded with high balls and pressure, yet stood firm and were class up front.
Great win. Just hope we can repeat that against Bham on Saturday. I didn’t see the match only the goals. It sounded like we were under cnstant pressure. I hope that’s not the case on Saturday. We will have try to get the ball in their space and put them under the cosh!. They will be just as tough a nut to crack.
I really hope we don’t let Wayne go. We need that quality in the team. Especially if we go up. It sounds like they kept us in the game.
FANTASTIC RESULT!!
What a result! Three great goals, the superb Ikeme save and all players giving 100% against very tough opposition.
I also went to the corresponding game last year and we now look a totally different team. Even Blades fans that I work with (here in Donny) say they can see why we are top. Fit, strong, confident and we always look like scoring.
Do we dare believe? Could this finally be our time…
Report abuse
Fantastic!!!!!
A game like that last season would of ended in defeat for the wolves!!!!
last season the team didn’t have the confidence or the attitude to get a result like that!!!
I put that down to a young side starting to mature now!! Last year they were still unsure of them selves but now there seems to be more self-belief!! Plus the best buy of the season, the best buy in the championship, THE BEST BUY OF THE CENTURY!!!! CHRIS IWELUMO!!!!!! has made the biggest of impacts to the team!!! his experience, his ability to hold the front line plus his goals have been the real deciding factor to the wolves revival!!!
UP THE WOLVES!!!!!!!

Great battling gritty performance even though our passing was probably the worst i’ve seen this season. Neil Collins outstanding along with Karl Henry 2 players who last year just was not at the races are becomming integral parts of the team. I was dissapointed with the muffled appreciation when Ikemi came off, this lad, in my opinion a better keeper than Hennessay and was great again last night. Need some cover on the left side for Saturday Freind battled and worked hard but had no quality on the ball the sort of interpassing that we get with Gray or Jarvis. Still my lad is over the moon as we live in Chesterfield so he has the bragging rights at school today. Well done lads we will look back at this result at the end of the season as one of our most important i’m sure.
Hi everyone, How did we set up 2nd half then? Did Ward push into left midfield and Freind at full back and where did Shackel play? Centre midfield?
Micks team, Mick’s tactics, Mick’s motivational skills. Neill Collins and Stephen Ward along with everybody else playing out of their skins, 12 points clear of third place. How great is this season turning out to be?!! Can Bob Wolf and the rest of the idiots that come on here spouting negativity please stay away for good and let the rest of us enjoy the best season in decades.
Just a note to the “I’ll take a draw” merchants on here over the last few days.
Have you seen our away record, we shouldn’t fear anybody.
I said we’d do ‘em and we certainly did, great performance from EVERYBODY last night, Foley looked even better in midfield in the 2nd half than he does at full back!
Collins was outstanding in the centre and at full back but will probably still lose out on Sat if Mancienne’s fit but hey that’s what squads are for.
I must of been to Sheff Utd 10 times and have never left there with a smile on my face before last night!!

Lets not bank on the 3 points against blues just yet. They still have to be earned. We’re all getting to know the consequences of spending what you’ve not yet earned!
That said, I think if we keep up our present form, Blues will need every ounce of that luck that’s carried them through so far.
They have some good players but we have a very good team.
Great result I never thought we would do it
Report abuse
cannot believe this result! the most difficult in terms of grit and determination, but we pulled through, still on cloud nine, blues will have to be played with a different style, need pace at the back to counter their pace up front, get that sorted, and the result is sorted…

A great rearguard action, with 14 heroes in all gold last night. 3 great goals and full commitment from everyone. We got what we deserved because we fought for everything.

Superb win last night!
Sheff Utd. seem to have adopted the bully boy tactic’s which got Stoke promoted!
Great defence when required not just an all out attacking team after all.
Sorry for the lads who were injured last night. Just goes to show how important a large squad is in this division.
Up The Wolves
P.S.
Can’t see any negative posts from our (friends) down the way!

I must admit I thought we would do well to come away with a draw last night, but it seems when we get an early goal, we are hard to turn over.
Great result and if we can avoid defeat at the weekend, we are in good shape going in to the winter period!

this was a big big win these are the games that show if you have the bottle or not for promotion AND WE DO,what a win against a team that never give up,well done the whole of the team for withstanding the aerial assault, great goals from looms&seb but a special mention must go to ikeme the saves he made were world class and kept us in the game(hope he,s fit for brum)hope the injued players are ok cmon lads lets make it eight in a row,WE ARE WOLVES

Fantastic result and performance by the whole team yesterday against the lowest goals against team in the Championship with three brillians goals. Hope the momentum continues on Saturday when we will be at The Drayton in St Julians to see the lunch-time encounter with the Brummies.
Mick McCarthy should be commended for assembling a young and strong squad with very few old heads like new hero Chris Iwelumo. What would have happened if MM was sacked as many on these forums wanted?
The squad seem to be on the one for all and all for one wavelength with each other. Just see what Wayne said about Carl in another article on today`s E&S.
We`re not making noises yet as it is still early days especially when we remember 2002 and all that.
But MM seems to be guiding his troops very well albeit on one leg. Another positive result on Sat will surely see him win the MotM award for the second time this season and he deserves it 100 per cent.

60. Torquay man…….no, dont agree.
A great battling performance with 3 quality goals, a superb team effort with every player giving 100%.
Make no mistake, this was a big big win over a strong top six side, these are the results that make other clubs stand up and take notice.
The wolves are the real deal, not the finished article by any means…but we are a young, talented, strong, energetic squad with the required hunger and desire.
There will be more twists and turns along the way this season but if you were a betting man…would you bet against the boys in old gold n black?……me neither.
Forward as one people…the futures gold n black!

I had the good luck to choose this as the first Wolves match to see for my two eldest kids aged 9 and 7 who, despite being born in Sheffield, thought it best to support dads team. They didn’t regret it! My first match was an unmemorable 0-0 draw against Man City at Molineux in 1969. What a contrast! The passion and commitment shown by our team was as good as any team I have seen playing in old gold and black. Karl’s save from Kilgannon’s volley was incredible. It took amazing strength and agility to do what Karl did there, and the memory will remain for years! Although he was off the pitch 5 minutes later, I think he was one of many players who can look at their contribution with great pride. In fact, I think they all can. We should trust the current management and playing squad to do their utmost for our club. Neil Collins and Richard Stearman were immense, and both worthy to wear the shirt and proud to do so. George Friend also made several important tackles, and can be proud of what he did when given the opportunity. I am sure he was nervous, but wouldn’t you be to come on in such circumstances? I know I would. The Blades are a very good team, and could count themselves a bit unlucky (even though most of the 50/50 decisions appeared to go their way) but they could not live with our awesome power! Keep it up me babbies!

This is the Wolves of old, Eddie Stuart refusing treatment with blood running down his face, nobody ever gave an inch! That is what I remember of Wolves of old.
We saw that same spirit at the Sheffield game, and I am enthused by it. However, the Wolves of old had enough class to half-populate the England team automatically.
We have some great players strutting their stuff, and some will do it in the Premiership. But Mancienne has shown us the quality we have to be aiming for, and we don’t have enough of that for survival in the Premiership.
But that is then and now is now!
Winning the Premiership in style is essential, and this team have the capability. Mick has even developed some tactical nuance and can alter the teams style of play on the fly. No longer one-trick-mick!
We are moving in the right direction.
OUT OF DARKNESS HAS COME LIGHT!
