Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Murray suffers new injury blow
Wednesday 26th November 2008, 11:30AM GMT.
Injury-cursed Matt Murray’s future was once again in crisis today after another shattering blow to the Wolves keeper’s fight to rescue his career.
The luckless 27-year-old is again facing another lengthy absence from the game after suffering what is thought to be a ruptured knee tendon playing on loan for Hereford United last night.
Murray’s injury came on an evening of heavy casualties for the Championship leaders which will have manager Mick McCarthy anxiously checking the bulletins from his medical staff in the build-up to Saturday’s derby with second-placed Birmingham City. But the decimation of the best goalkeeping department outside the Premier League is sure to be top of his agenda.
Murray’s latest calmity came on the same night that Carl Ikeme’s exciting first team progress was abruptly halted by a bruised hip and gashed shin halfway through Wolves’ outstanding 3-1 victory against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
He is struggling to be fit for the Blues game and with Murray in despair at this latest cruel twist in his tortuous fight against injuries, Wayne Hennessey suddenly finds himself propping up the goalkeeping department single-handedly. Murray has fought his way back from cruciate, shoulder, back injuries and a troublesome foot stress fracture in his time and, having set off on the road to recovery with Hereford recently, was “devastated” by last night’s injury at MK Dons.
Hereford’s former Wolves boss Graham Turner said: “His knee gave way under him and he looks in a bad way, he was fairly upset and it looks serious.
“After a couple of years of trying to get back we feel devastated for him. It’s devastated the dressing room.” Wolves will wait to fully assess Murray’s latest problem before commenting.
And there are other problems for Wolves today with Darren Ward suffering a fractured cheekbone playing for Watford while the casualties kept coming in Sheffield.
McCarthy is hopeful that Dave Edwards, who trooped groggily from the game with mild concussion and dizziness after a heavy fall, will be fit for Saturday while Michael Kightly is determined to play despite suffering a broken nose.
But less clear are the prospects of Ikeme and Dave Jones, who was forced out of the game at half-time by a calf problem.

sorry to hear about the injury. When fit, Matt is England class. I hope that it is repairable and he gets another chance.
as said before by me.
A crying shame for a player who would have reached international recognition.
all the best for the future Matt.
I really think this is the end of the road for Matt, maybe we can retain him in a coaching capacity, he has qualities that could be passed on to our current keepers. Such a shame, Murray was quality and if he could have retained his fitness i am sure he would be in Capello’s squad. Hope things work out for you Matt.
Bad news for Matt I wish him well as he is pure class when fit but this shows that we should try and keep hold of all our keepers and ignore all the bids we will surely get for Hennesy come January.
deary me. We have a good enough squad to cope. Gutted for matty he is genuinely a fantastic guy.
GUTTED for big Matt !
How unlucky can someone get.
Keep your chin up mate.
Bubble wrap goalkeeper strip needed. Darren Anderton used to be the biggest sick-note out there, but I’m afaraid to say it Matt, you top him.
All the best with getting the injury sorted, but I feel you need to look at an alternative career, as a club will only offer a pay-as-you-play deal in the future.
the worst news of the season. I was really hoping that this was going to be his year and my heart goes out to him because without doubt he is Wolves No. 1. All the best for the future Matt
Report abuse
I hope this doesnt signal the end of Matt Murray. He is one guy who deserves premiership football. Fingers crossed for the guy.
Secondly, with injuries, part and parcel of football, I hope MM and Morgan do spend some money in January to compensate on any injury or suspensions.
Such a cruel twist of fate for an outstanding keeper! I don’t think I know of a player have so many luckless injuries as yourself! Keep your chin up kid….lets hope its not the end! Be strong Matt whatever the outcome…..the Wolves faithful will always hold you in their hearts!
Norfolk hit the nail on the head with offereing you a coaching role at the club if it is career threatening.
it was a sad end to a fantastic night when we heard this news on the radio coming back, all the best matt
Report abuse
Such a shame for a quality keeper but I really think he should consider hanging up his boots. Maybe he could train to be a goalkeeping coach but he really does seem to be made of glass. All the best Matty!
With rumours of Tottenham and Arsenal coming in for Hennesy in January, I think this is one time when we ignore the chance to make a quick buck and hold onto him, in the light of Murrays injury. Surely the logic of £5m now is worse than a potential £30m in six months, i’d take the gamble.
I feel genuinely sorry for the guy.He would have been the best goalkeeper in England if he hadn’t had such bad luck.
I’m one of Murray’s biggest fans but I’m sorry to say I cant see a way back for him!!!
Lets face facts his body isn’t made for football!!! If he was a racing horse Mick would of put him down a long time ago!!!
He’s got all the ability in the world to succeed at the highest level but his frail body will never let him achieve this!! Its sad to say & I’m sure there’s loads of wolves fans who will strongly disagree with me here but as soon as he’s got ova this injury we should think about selling him!!! Maybe a fresh start might change his run of bad luck????
Up The Wolves!!!!
Good Luck Matt.
Can’t believe it’s happened again to you!
Lets get you fit for a testimonial and see from there, hopefully your playing days will continue!
The time has perhaps arrived for Matt to seriously consider retiring from the game.
All his injuries will take their toll on him later on in life and although only 27yo, Matt should call it a day.
He has been one of football’s unfortunates, could well have worn the England jersey and been an established international but ‘Lady Luck’ has not been kind to him.
Think on Matt, your health is precious, can you say the same about football?
A bad night with injuries and to back up what other people have said Matt is a top bloke. Before he made it at Wolves, i was in Lichfield one night and as I mate knew him, he bought me a pint.
My other concern is Hennessey, as I think that Ikeme has modelled coming off his line on Matt Murray. Wayne has to stand and be counted on Saturday.
This is the most crucial game of the season and we need our strongest available team out and at the present that would be Ikeme and Mancienne!
Sometimes in football, as in life, there is no justice is there? Surely one of the most likeable characters in the game, an outstanding talent and yet so many cruel injuries. Let’s hope it’s not the end but you have to fear the worst.
This throws the spotlight back on the Hennessey debate. For me, whatever bid comes along in January we have to retain him. Keepers of his talent who are in such demand are like gold-dust in the game these days. Sure Carl Ikeme has taken his chance superbly but he’s still young and with Matt’s latest injury we need Wayne.
On a lighter note, the result last night at one of the toughest venues in the league sends a big message to the rest of the league. I would have taken a point but then maybe we should stop underestimating this wonderful team of young, talented and confident players?
Can’t wait for Saturday. What a great time to be a Wolves fan!
Sad for Matt, but doesn’t really affect us as a team gunning for promotion. Ikeme and Wayne are strong enough.
Can,t see Murray ever reaching his potential thought Kirkland was injury jinxed but Murray beats him.
Really tragic news for Matt, in my opinion the best of our keeper trio. It really does look like the end of the line this time for him.
Hopefully the other injuries will not prove to be costly. We seem to pick up more than our fair share every season, but hopefully we have strength in depth this time round to cope.
Which keeper are we going to get on loan then now? Need one.
Chin Up Matt!! One day your be back!!!
Stourbaggie – Murray is an infinitely better keeper than Carson ever could be.
He’s just so incredibly unforutnate it’s untrue. Best of luck Matty, keep your chin up mate.
I feel so sorry for Matt! Could and should have been Englands number 1 – the most talented player never to get a shot at the big time – Good Luck Big Matt – we love ya!!
awfull news.
but i think we all need to realise that eventually the doctors will tell him its best he stops playing. it’l be a terrible day for wolves and for a person who deserves alot better than he seems to get. all the best matt.
You have been through so much Matt – don’t give up now. You have to believe that you can overcome this cruel blow because I’m sure you can. We all want you to succeed.
when it was announced that matt murray was going to Hereford on loan in the thread i posted can you see him making it through a months loan without breaking down again because i can’t he’s to injury prone,i think its time now for him to hang up his boots which is a sad thing to have to say about a keeper who when he was fit was easily wolves best keeper, but we have got to bite the bullet and let him go or keep him in a coaching role only,WE ARE WOLVES
Report abuse
Great clubman! After following Matt through injury after injury should he retire? if so, please wolves keep him at the club all fans love him.
Is there anyone out there that didnt see this coming??
Its a blow for Matt but not really for Wolves promotion chances as we have coped without him for seasons now and moved on in the goalkeeping department. I would not have swapped Matt for Carl or Wayne anyhow. Its a shame after watching him become a great keeper that he will probably retire now but thats life. Dust yourself off Matt and pursue a coaching career or something. Its a shame you have never reached your potential.
Poor guy.
Matt Murray is the Jonny Wilkinson of the football world.
Just as it looks like he may recover something else happens.
Hang up his boots! No way Matt.
Matt if your reading this, all may seem very depressing now but you have two things in your favour.
1, You are still only 27. D James is 38. There are players who have recovered from broken necks and broken backs. Your age, strength and medical science will get you through this desparately unlucky time.
2, Your talent. You are the best keeper at Wolves and at least in the top 5 best English keepers in the country.
You will play again, so chin up, you know the Wolves fans will support you even through these dark days.
We are Wolves.
Got to be one of the unluckiest keepers at wolves and one of the best at that 2. Good luck Matty. hope to see you in a Wolves shirt again soon.
This is terrible, I feel really bad for him; he’s a fantastic keeper – one of the best – when he’s fit and it sounded like Hereford were quickly falling in love with him too.
Good luck Murray, get well soon, it’s a horrible shame what’s happened to your career.
If he has to retire I really do hope he’s kept in the game somehow, he deserves that atleast. Maybe he’ll stay with us in some capacity.
Blues fan-in peace!
A crying shame to hear about Murray’s latest injury -not just for Wolves – but for England!
After so many injuries you have to question where to now – having recently seen Nicky Weaver -similarly promising before 3-4 years of injuries like Murray – make a complete tit of himself- you have to hope Murray wont try to come back unless he can be near to what he was -
No one wants to see potentially great players like Murray make idiots of themselves.
I concur having met him – a top bloke…
KRO Matt Murray!
Truth is Matt Murray was always overrated- and Im a season ticket holder- we should have sold him years ago, now a poor keeper who was struggling on loan at Hereford- has no sympathy from me on his wages
Report abuse
Season ticket holder where Torquay Man? Because you must be confused.
Matt Murray’s natural talent puts English goalkeepers in the Premiership to shame. Truly gifted.
Overrated? youre havin a laugh surely.
Great keeper, great bloke and as unlucky as they come.
Lets see what happens and see what the doctors and specialists say.
Whatever the outcome i wish Matt all the very best.
We have only really had two full seasons out of Matt and on both occassions we reached the play-offs (no coincidence) in one of the playffs he played and we got promoted, in the other he was injured and we didn’t get through (coincidence). Overrated? no way! strggling at Hereford? they worshipped him. England would be a better team with a fit Murray look what we are having to put up with now.
“really think this is the end of the road for Matt, maybe we can retain him in a coaching capacity”
I agree with you on that one. His mental strenght must be amazing, and combining that with his ability as a first-class goalie would make a good coach.
37- overrated- bloody overrated – and you call yourself a season ticket holder – WERE-PLUTO!living in torquay more or less say’s it all, I don’t think matt wants your sympathy, stay in torquay muppet.
Good luck Matt and ignore pratts like 37-what a joke! overrated you would’nt know overrated if it smacked you in the gob.
37-you an absolute idiot! did you not watch the play off final? that second half he single handedly won us that game with a fantastic penalty save, free kick save that he tipped onto the post and numerous one on ones. Truth is, he has been the unluckiest footballer in the history surely. One his day, he is good enough to play for ANY team in england fact! Torquay man, how about next time, u stay in torquay and not come back, your an idiot and surely a bitter albion fan
Report abuse
im pretty devastated for Murray He’s had such a hard time with injuries of late and I thought when he was at hereford that it would be fresh start for him and he could get his career back I sincerely hope he gets well again because he is a top class stopper..

The rude and aggressive tone of 42- johnwolf should be johnpussycat)is exactly why after every home game Im straight back to Torquay, love the wolves but desperate area.
I’m so frustrated for Murray, he has so much talent but is too injury prone to ever get an England call up.
His knee sounds shot to me, who knows what the future holds for him.
Good look Matty what ever happens.
80 odd apps in his whole career and he’s 27.

45) Stay at home with your clotted cream and even better join Helen Chamberlain at Torquay.

(torquay man)murry was a top top keeper when fully fit overreated i think you should do us all a favour support torquay united because we dont want up at the moll
Report abuse
I think I have posted ten times about the same thing! GET HIM GONE… come on guys, get real, when did Murray last complete a full season? back into last millenium. Yet for some reason the powers that be hang onto him. He needs to get fit, hardly play and then transfer him. Just think what we could have gotten for him when he was last fit a few months ago.
Obviously his career is over and in terms of value, worthless on the transfer market. I thought Morgan was a businessman?
Murrays massive frame with his spindly long legs are to blame i reckon. Shame because he would be world class if he could stay fit. I guess some people aren’t up to playing professional football. His talent was never in question. George Ndah was the same, terrific professional but his body couldn’t cope either. Good luck Matt and thanks for some fantastic memories!!
45- You my friend have taken idiocy to a level never reached on these boards before, and let me tell you that is some achievement.
Next time your at the match, repeat your comment, and i’m sure you’ll be able to make it back home in record time.
45. I went to TORQUAY once. It was SHUT.
No way that a talent like this should just be allowed to retire. Use medical science, and get him right. Matt is the best goalie we have ever had in my lifetime, other than our Bert!
Forget the doubters, this man has talent and at 28 is still just maturing as a goalie. If he was 38 years old then maybe the doom-sayers would be right, but not with Matt.
Keep your chin up, the Wolves fans will support you all the way.
Sorry Torquay Man but I don’t care how far you travel, I can understand Johnwolfs anger (42). Matt Murray is by no way overrated. He is by far the best goalkeeper I have seen at Wolves and, if he could get fit and improve his kicking, is definitely an international in the making. I cannot believe how desperately unlucky he has been. Also want to say to Dull Amigo (7) – you’re all heart aren’t you? Murray’s injuries are physical not in the mind.
I’m absolutely gutted for you Matt. News of your injury really took the gloss off what otherwise had been a great night. Chin up. I wish you all the best.

42-I have been to torquay on a number of occasions and apart from the sea front the rest of it is a slum! as for being rude-not half as rude as you have been to a great player, I take nothing back, you are not a muppet just an half baked cretin albion fan, don’t think for one minute that I am a pussycat because when it comes to people like you then I can live up to the name.
Matt Murray is one of the finest goalies ever to grace the Molineux!
At 28 years old a forward might be considered too old to go through another recuperation, but for a goalie he’s only just coming of age! They go on into their 40′s if they live a clean life.
Matt should be supported with another recuperation, as the end result for Wolves is to have the finest goalie in England playing for us!
Please back Matt every inch of the way!
No Sympathy, Torquay Man? What on earth has Matt Murray’s wages got to do with his injury? Wolves don’t need your sort of support thank you. Next time you head back down to Torquay do us all a favour and don’t come back. Shut it Kermit!
I have to totally disagree with Torquay Man. I read three different reports from his first game and his performance was given between good and brilliant.
Last Night the score was 0-0 when he got injured and again had a good first half.
I am personally very critical on keepers and I would rate Matt as one of the best I have seen at ALL levels.
It is not like these are soft injuries four serious injuries. One injury for one player would seem unfair!
I hope Matt is not finished but I fear the worst
Report abuse
I truly don’t want to say this…
But do you think this is the end of Matt Murray’s career? ):
I mean, 2 horrific knee injuries in the space of 2 years, I saw the injury on the news, and it looked like his leg was going to fly off :(
This sucks to be honest, the possible end of a quality keeper and a good man.
Get well soon Matt.
Head up Matt.

Torquay Man, what a rude and aloof chap you are. Firstly you mention how you have no sympathy for Murray as he earns a lot of money, well, it’s something seperate to that isn’t it. This is a man whom has suffered a catalogue of terrible injuries that has prevented him from participating in a game he lives and breathes for, i am sure he enjoys a handsome living financially, but foremost its the game, and the injuries that are preventing him from playing it. You then insult Wolverhampton, which may not be perhaps the prettiest village in England, but thousands of people live and work in the area, honest decent folk whom live their lives there. Just say something intelligent and something that is relevant if you have to comment at all Torquay man, please.

I was disappointed to here the news about Murray’s latest injury,i feel when all three of our keepers are fit then Matts our number one.
Us Wolves fans wont want to admit this but can we really see Matt Murray ever playing for Wolves again,i dont.
I wish Matt all the luck for a speedy recovery!!!

Torquay man……..you asked for it with that ridiculous post.

It is time for Matty to call it quits. There is no doubt he is a great keeper but his health is more important than football.
I fear he runs a very real risk of permanent damage if he tries to come back again.
It is so sad, a great player and a great guy. Wolves must look after him in his hour of need.
BTW Torquay Man – You deserve everything you get on this board.

45.Torquay Muppet….desperate area??? your a disgrace mate, stay in torquay cause your not welcome in wolves with that attitude.
Murray overated????? have you forgot that he was voted as the best player in the division by other teams fans? And given that hes a goal keeper how rare that is? The boy is 100%international class but has been so unfortunate with harsh injuries throughout his career to date.
Keep your chin up Murray lad and stay strong, out of darkness cometh light……
