Queen Aids gig hits the big screen
Tuesday 25th November 2008, 11:26AM GMT.
Birmingham’s Vue Cinema is one of 39 cinemas which will be screening a special charity performance of Queen + Paul Rodgers’ Let The Cosmos Rock concert on World Aids Day, next Monday December 1.
The actual concert drew a record attendance for Queen of 350,000 and was filmed on September 12 in UKraine’s Freedom Square by award winning director David Mallett.
Filmed in high definition with 5.1 surround sound, the sound and visuals are of the highest quality available in cinemas today.
The band wanted to support the cause, whose message “Don’t let Aids ruin your life” has special meaning for them after lead singer Freddie Mercury lost his battle with the virus.
Queen and Paul Rodgers made a special trip to Ukraine on September 12 to play the two-and-a-half-hour free concert.Concert director David Mallet said: “The big screen setting is an ideal medium in which to feel a sense of participation in the Kharkov event. This was by far the biggest show of its kind ever staged.
“The equipment needed two Antonov 124 aircraft – the world’s biggest cargo planes – to get it into the Ukraine, and it is almost impossible to imagine the scale of it once it was built. You would never get a sense of that on television or DVD, which is why it had to be made for the biggest of screens.”
James Dobbin, Vue Head of Sales, said: “Vue Cinema is delighted to be able to offer a unique concert experience with one of the most iconic rock bands of all time. The fantastic performances, the awesome collaboration with Rodgers and the important message behind the concert all combine to make what will be a thoroughly enjoyable and moving musical experience.”
Tickets for the 8pm Vue cinema screening cost £7 and can be bought from www.myvue.com/queen
