Traders’ fury over blackout problem
Saturday 22nd November 2008, 11:29AM GMT.
Fed-up Wednesbury traders are demanding action after being hit by a fourth power cut in as many months.
Yesterday the Iceland store had to be evacuated and Morrisons was forced to sell off pre-cooked chickens at rock bottom prices.
This is after electricity shut down, causing freezers to stop working.
Around the rest of the town, shops were forced to cease trading and more than 3,000 homes and business were left without power.
Locals say at least four power cuts have shut down the town in around four months, causing havoc and denting their profits.
Iceland branch deputy manager Jane Hall said: “It is a pain but at least we know what to do when it happens, we’ve had plenty of practice.”
Julie Carter, owner of Top Notch Hairdressers in the High Street, added: “Once you can forget but this is happening too much now, we are losing business because of it.
“We had to send people home to wash off their own colour and we couldn’t use the hairdryers.”
Rebecca Bieniaszewska spokeswoman for electricity provider Eon, apologised for the problems. She added: “We are not always able to tell exactly what has caused a fault.”
