Wolves have suffered a blow after Sunderland decided to hand a surprise recall to winger Carlos Edwards.

The Black Cats have decided to exercise their right to bring back the 30-year-old, despite no apparent injuries in that area.

Edwards, who was halfway through his three-month loan and had played six games, set up both Wolves goals in last Saturday’s 2-1 win at Southampton and has been in improving form for Mick McCarthy’s side.

With Matt Jarvis some weeks away from senior contention – he is due to make his reserve comeback next week – McCarthy will have plenty to think about before Saturday’s clash agains Blackpool.

McCarthy had been alternating Michael Gray with Edwards away from home before last weekend and may reintroduce the former England international for the visit of the Tangerines.

Andy Keogh, who played a similar position for the Republic of Ireland in last night’s 3-2 defeat by Poland, is also an option.

On the comeback trail, Jarvis is pencilled in to play 20 minutes against Stourbridge in the Birmingham Senior Cup next Tuesday.

He said: “I’ve been training with the under-16s and the youth team over the last couple of days and I might be involved with first team training before the weekend.

“Hopefully if it all goes well, I can get perhaps a 20-minute run-out on Tuesday.”

Jarvis isn’t counting on walking straight back into the team, despite the departure of Edwards.

The former Gillingham man said: “There’s certainly no way I can just expect to get back into the team. First off, I’m going to have to prove to the gaffer I’m 100 per cent fit. I’ll probably have to wait for my chance.”

Instead, Jarvis has vowed to continue to take things steadily as he rebuilds his fitness.

He added: “Running-wise, I was getting close to where I was before, until we stepped up the football work.”

McCarthy may consider another dip into the transfer market but has already seen one potential option, Villa’s Wayne Routledge, join Cardiff on loan.
