Information service move celebrated
Thursday 20th November 2008, 11:28AM GMT.
An information service advising youngsters about careers, health and family problems has celebrated settling into its new home.
Connexions Staffordshire moved the Stafford Centre from Gaolgate Place to its HQ in Foregate House, Foregate Street, in June. The new centre was formally opened by Councillor Robert Simpson, deputy leader of Staffordshire County Council.
The council is one of Connexions key partners, along with Stoke-on-Trent City Council, the Staffordshire Learning & Skills Council, schools, colleges, training providers, the voluntary and community sector, employers and young people.
Councillor Simpson said: “This new location provides a base for Connexions’ work but a lot of outstanding work takes place in the community and educational settings, which shows that the true strength of Connexions is its people.” Advisers help 13-19-year-olds with issues that may affect them, such as deciding about courses, training placements and careers, part-time jobs, health or family or relationship problems.
The adults service helps them into work or learning. They can make appointments to see advisers who can help them decide what step to take next. “The Advisers can offer help with topics such as job searching, writing CVs, filling in application forms, training opportunities, courses and funding,” said spokeswoman Nicola Jones. “Connexions services for young people aims to provide integrated advice, guidance and access to personal development opportunities to help them make a smooth transition to adulthood and working life. It offers them practical help with choosing the right courses and careers, including access to broader personal development through activities like sport, performing arts and volunteering activities. It will also provide help and advise on issues like drug abuse, sexual health and homelessness.”
The centre opens Monday-Thursday (9am-5pm), Friday 9am-4pm and Saturday 10am-1pm. The freephone is 0808 1000 434 and website www.cxstaffs.co.uk For young people’s services call on 01785 356656 or visit www.cxstaffs.co.uk Adults call 0800 298 0234.
