Valero ignores big-cash label pressure
Wednesday 19th November 2008, 11:28AM GMT.
Record Albion signing Borja Valero today dismissed the pressure of his big-money price tag and backed the Baggies to climb the Premier League table.
The talented Spaniard gave his first English media interview since the Baggies smashed their transfer record to bring him from Real Mallorca for £4.7m.
And the 23-year-old insisted the large fee does not add to the pressure on his shoulders.
“I am not worried about that,” said Valero, who spoke through an interpreter during a visit to Spanish students at Sandwell Academy.
“If West Brom wanted me in the first place it is because they thought I was worth it. I have to play at my best in any case but the price hasn’t put pressure on me.
“Everything happened very fast. I got a call saying that West Brom were willing to pay the clause in my contract to Mallorca and I came here.
“I wanted to come here because I think the English league is the best in the world and I want to progress my career. That is why I came here.”
Valero’s initial weeks at The Hawthorns have seen the Baggies drop to the bottom of the Premier League despite a string of increasingly impressive performances from the former Real Madrid trainee.
But Valero is taking inspiration from his season at Real Mallorca, where the island club climbed from the foot of La Liga to a healthy mid-table finish.
“I had a similar situation in Spain last season, which is why I’m not worried about being bottom of the Premier League now,” said Valero.
“We are only three points away from 12th place. We were in 17th place with only seven games to go and we stopped up. We had a way of playing and the players used to say if we carry on playing like that we would find a way of achieving what they wanted.
“The situation with West Brom is more or less the same. We’re working hard and playing well so we just need to keep believing.
“It’s like Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United are in another league.
“The games coming up are difficult but they are very important.
“When we’ve played against similar teams like Middlesbrough and Fulham we have won.”

Talking sense Senor!
Beat teams around us and we’ll be fine, if we win on Saturday (come on God, it’s about time isn’t it?!), we’ll be out of the bottom 3 and happily mid table again!!!!!!

A draw is the MINIMUM we need from this game. It is one of those six pointer jobbies which we need to win but certainly not lose.
Come on you baggie boys!

A draw minimum, you ain,t kidding, jeeez,we need something to kick start us.

We need three points to kick start us and what better place to start winning than the hoodoo that is Stoke That should give all a lift.

I love watching this player. As well as his skill, he has a very willing attitude. Seems to get better every game.
I think our defence along with the strikers have been subject to a lot of unfair criticism of late. Yes the defence have struggled against Rooney, Berbatov, Tevez, Annelka, Drogba and Keane. Miller and Bednar haven’t been thumping the goals in against Terry, Carragher and Vidic. The midfield should also have a better chance of competing now that Lampard, Gerrard and Ronaldo. Let’s judge them on how they do in the next few weeks, should be less of a mis match. Keep the faith.

I dont think Valero is gonna get you out this mess, not when according to your manager, you are close to his points target for this time of the season, WOW now theres a man with ambition.
Terrypremierbaggie talks of Wolves being in the Chumpionship, well I shouldn’t let it worry you too much sunshine, cos you wont have to play them next season….your gonna pass em on the way down.

9 JIWAL.
Can’t remember if you’re Wolves or Albion. If you’re Wolves, I doubt very much if you’ve actually seen him play but fair enough it’s the sort of comment I’d expect. If you’re Albion, the same applies, have you seen him? You cannot be serious.
PS.
Anyone else hear Graham Roberts interview on Talksport this morning. Went out of his way to mention the Albion fans support against Chelsea. He was a guest at the ground and said how impressed he was that no one got on the players or managers backs and the great vocal support continued throughout the game.
Graham also said it was the same when he was at the club, that although the team weren’t doing well the support for the players was unwavering. He remembered his time here fondly, including the derby game where he tackled Bully and snapped his shinguard in half. Can’t call him an Albion legend but will always remember him fondly. I think we missed him at the beginning of his career, we were doing our usual trick of trying to get Weymouth to lower their £15,000 asking price when Spurs stepped in and signed him.
On the subject of support. Let’s not get back onto the Smethwick versus the rest old chestnut. I’m in the BRE and sing throughout the game as do many others. I think it’s the same for the Rainbow Stand (or Bomber Brown stand as it should be called, I refuse to call it the bland E— Stand.) The difference is that we’re spread out whereas the Smethwick are pushed together in a confined space, it’s the same reason that the away fans always sound louder. I wish it was still terracing so that the singers could stand together. I hate watching football sitting down.

12 sutton,me n worcester and his lovely wife sit in brummie n we sing all the way through winning or loseing rain or snow,im suprised youv not heard worcester his voice is that soft we call him the the brummie road nightingale, aye boing boing donk

13 Terry.
I probably have heard him. If I haven’t with his voice and your legendary good looks I don’t know how I’ve missed you. What you say just proves my point, when you look round the Brummie there are loads of people singing but because we’re all spread out it isn’t as effective as the Smethwick. The only answer is if all the silent b—–s give the lads a bit of support instead of just moaning when things go wrong.
