Second power cut hits school
Tuesday 18th November 2008, 6:46PM GMT.
A power cut at a Wolverhampton school forced it to close to more than 1,000 pupils today – for the second time in the space of seven days.
A fuse fault on an electric cable running into St Peter’s Collegiate School, in Compton Road West, was blamed for the power cut yesterday at around 1pm.
Electricity company Central Networks restored supplies at 11pm, but head teacher Rev Huw Bishop ordered the school’s 1,006 pupils to stay at home. He confirmed the school was likely to re-open tomorrow.
A similar incident happened last Wednesday when an electrical fault cut the power and students were sent home.
Rev Bishop said he hoped the problem was now sorted.
“We’ve had two power cuts in the space of a week which isn’t ideal,” he said.
“On both occasions we had to send pupils home because there was no heating in the school. Hopefully the problem has been sorted and won’t happen again.
“The power cut yesterday occurred at lunchtime and the electricity wasn’t back on until very late last night.”
Letters were sent out to parents informing them the school was closed.
Andrew Barrow, a spokesman for Central Networks, said: “When we sent someone out, they discovered the problem was a faulted fuse.”
