Carson backed to hit the heights

Tuesday 18th November 2008, 11:30AM GMT.

carson21.jpegAlbion boss Tony Mowbray has backed Scott Carson to get better and better as the Baggies keeper waits on a possible England return.

Carson is in line to figure for England, with manager Fabio Capello set to experiment in the friendly with Germany in Berlin.

Mowbray believes his keeper will improve further yet, despite closing in on another significant milestone in the rehabilitation of his career.

The Baggies boss said: “Scott is still a young boy and, as he says to me all the time, he hopes to be a different goalie in four or five years to the one he is now.

“He wants to be better in every department. At 22 you are a long way away from being the goalkeeper you want to be and Scott is on that journey.

“If he can play for England then hopefully it will show him he is at the right club, playing at the right level.

“He has had enough work to do this year, which is one way of a goalkeeper showcasing his talents.

“If he gets the call-up we will be delighted for him, but it’s more important that he is fit and ready to go again on Saturday at Stoke, because I’m sure he will have plenty to do then.”

Carson looks set to play for England for the first time since his error against Croatia in the crucial Euro 2008 qualifier at Wembley.

Mowbray believes a week of international duty has come at the perfect time for Carson, after a difficult match against Chelsea.

The Albion manager said: “It isn’t a bad thing for him to be away with England this week in a different environment with a different group of players.

“I didn’t have an in-depth chat with him at the weekend, but I think he will have been disappointed with one or two of the goals, because of the high standards he sets himself.

“But we look forward to him having a good week’s training with England.”

mmmmmmmm “disappointed with one or two of the goals”. Loking at them again on the TV, I would suggest that he should have stopped all three of them. Getting beaten at your near post once is bad enough but to let it happen again and again is just bad goalkeeping.
Still, I suppose he is entitled to have a bad day just the same as the outfield players. Better to have an off day in a game that we weren’t going to win anyway than in an important game like this week’s at Stoke. Overall he’s been a good signing and will only get better.

I fear the worst on Wednesday if he’s between the sticks!

    2. I think your comments are unfair! Carson should not have had to attempt saves for any of those goals. He was badly let down by very bad defending from defenders AND outfield players. Meite looks very slow and not match fit.

All I can say is, I am so pleased that the fat waiter insisted we pay £10 mil for him to come to Villa, no way was O’Neil gonna fork out that kind of money on a goalie as vulnerable as Carson, although after saying that, he was prepared to pay that much for Gordon who eventually went to Sunderland.
I do sincerely hope he comes good for you, but so far, his performances this season do not suggest he will.

With due respect mate, apart from the relatively infrequent viewing on TV, what do you know of Carsons performances for us this term ?
He is a better custodian than we have had for a good few years, and it is all too easy to forget his tender years, he will improve with experience.

Distant baggie, (i seriously doubt the latter part of your name)
Have you EVER got anything positive to say ?

Ia ANYONE believing that distant “baggie” is an albion fan ??

The mug never posts anything positive, but is strangely missing when we win a game – just like old laughingwolf…. hmmmm, nah, couldn’t be.

    Number 3 – Why??

Apart from 1 goal at Liverpool Carson has been excellent for us this season, I’m 100% positive if he hadn’t been between sticks then some of our defeats would have been alot heavier!

I rate him highly and hes only gonna get better being his age – experience will benefit him greatly. You have to accept he’ll make the odd mistake here & there, two goals were his fault against Chelski but its very harsh to blame him for their 2nd goal – Anelkas finish was sublime, sometimes you have to aknowledge the quality of the opposition rather than look for scapegoats amongst your own team.

An yet even still some people dont rate, him i think if people dont rate him they need to re think if they are in the right game or not.
he is 22 give him bluddy time, for me he is a good solid keeper, ok maybe he makes 1 or 2 mistakes but so does Petr Cech an he was rated one of the worlds best. Get behind him he is an England future No1
