The 68-year old Wulfrunian is to be given the honour during a ceremony at the Civic Centre on December 17.

Mr Porter won four world titles in a glittering 25-year cycling career and is now a BBC commentator on the sport. He already has the entrance to Aldersley Leisure Village – Hugh Porter Way – named after him and is featured in the city’s Sporting Hall of Fame. On his latest honour, he said today: “It’s very special. I understand not many people get this accolade. It will be an amazing honour.”

Mr Porter was one of Britain’s greatest-ever cyclists, winning four world titles in individual Olympian pursuits as well as a Commonweath Games gold medal in 1966.

He is married to Anita Lonsbrough, a British Olympic swimming gold medalist.

Council leader Neville Patten said today: “Hugh has been a great ambassador for Wolverhampton and it will be befitting to give him this rare honour.”

Hurrah for Hugh! He must be proud of the success of the British team. It’s so good to see cycling up in the frame. He is without doubt, part of the success.

Well done Hugh, you and the misses have done the Country proud.
I remember watching you at the Olympics, and now enjoy your witty and incisive commentary. Over recent years you have probably commentated on the greatest success in any single British sport. What an honour for one who set the standard all those years ago. It would be great to honour you at the Molineux before a match.
