Bednar recalled to the national team

Monday 17th November 2008, 4:47PM GMT.

fulham8.jpegAlbion striker Roman Bednar has received a late call-up for the Czech Republic and could win his first cap in two years on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old was take a surprise flight to his homeland this afternoon, after being drafted into Petr Rada’s squad to face San Marino in Serravalle.

The call-up for the World Cup qualifier comes after Bednar was omitted from the original squad. He has been drafted in to replace Banik Ostrava’s Vaclav Sverkos.

The former Hearts striker’s only previous cap came as a second-half substitute in a 3-1 home defeat by Serbia in August 2006.

Rada flew over to see Bednar score his fourth Barclays Premier League goal of the season in the 2-2 Hawthorns draw with Blackburn a fortnight ago.

He could now figure in the group three qualifying clash.

He said: “I was on my way back from training with Albion and I got a call from the coach asking if I could go over. I am flying over to Prague and I think we go on to San Marino from there.

“It’s been a long two years but I was told that while I was playing Championship football I was unlikely to get back in. I’ve got an opportunity this time because someone is injured and I just hope I can do enough to get in next time as well.

“I hoped if I had success in the Premier League it would open the door to the national team. I’m glad it’s happened. I’ve scored four goals so far and it could have been more.

“I’m happy with how things have gone so far. I’m healthy, I haven’t been injured for a long time and I’m just enjoying my football. I’m determined to prove myself for my country.

“There are no easy games in international football and we need to give 100 per cent against San Marino. I will just do my best and I’ll be glad to play any part.

“Even if I don’t get on it will be great just to be a part of things. Hopefully I can come back and score some goals against Stoke on Saturday.”

I reckon when he gets there they should take his passport off him so he cant come back, he’s useless, we’ve got enough rubbish in the Prem as it is and its about time we got rid.

Not sure why he’s been picked. Ok, he puts himself about and grabs the odd goal but he is not international calibre. Sorry Roman, you need to focus more on your club than dream of international glories mate!
