Mick and the Popemobile

burnley13.jpegWolves boss Mick McCarthy has revealed being on crutches hasn’t stopped him coaching his players – after revealing how his ‘Popemobile’ helps.

The boss is on crutches for six weeks while his ankle heals, after an operation to remove foreign bodies last week.

South Staffordshire Golf Club have lent McCarthy a buggy to get around the Compton pitches easier while the ankle heals.

The 49-year-old reckons he has still been undertaking pretty much the same workload as before.

He said: “I’ve been on the training ground every day – it hasn’t stopped me. I haven’t done anything different. Terry (Connor, assistant manager) and myself do all the coaching. ‘TC’ has done a little bit more but I’ve still been at the training ground, just not the sessions.

“I do the Friday session every week, I did Thursday and Friday last week and I did yesterday’s session. I don’t need to be out on my crutches every day but I’ve got my golf buggy anyway.

“I’ve got my ‘Popemobile’ and make sure I’m out there, so I can watch everything going on and give my input when it’s needed.”

McCarthy’s time on crutches isn’t without its frustrations, after joking whoever invents a device to allow crutches to stand up will make a fortune.

He said: “It’s frustrating because of the crutches – anyone who could invent crutches that stand up, that would be fantastic – you’d make millions.

“I spend half my time putting them up against something then they fall over and that frustrates me!

“Try getting ready this week and getting three bags downstairs on your own – it’s not easy. I looked at the top of the stairs and I was going to throw them down yesterday morning, but I managed to get up and do it!

“It’s frustrating but I’m not poorly, I’m fine apart from my ankle and there’s no complaints from me.”

McCarthy added: “If your team’s winning, you find your garden looks better, the car looks cleaner, everything looks better, but my ailment hasn’t got anything to do with it.”
