Mowbray fearful of Chelsea riot
Friday 14th November 2008, 11:30AM GMT.
Albion manager Tony Mowbray has admitted he is “fearful” that Chelsea could run riot if they click into to top gear at the Hawthorns.
The rampant Premier League leaders arrive in the Midlands looking to maintain their dazzling league form on the road.
Mowbray conceded he is worried, after already seeing his team beaten by Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool.
The Baggies boss said: “There are some games that we go into and I think ‘we can’t win today’ if they play well,.
“I don’t say that to the players or the media beforehand but we can’t, because our 22-year-old right-back, our 20-year-old centre back or our young goalkeeper can’t stop people like Fernando Torres and Robbie Keane, because they are two good.
“Until you get every piece of your jigsaw right you go into some games feeling fearful. I think this is one of those days and I don’t think there is any embarrassment in saying that because on their day, as we saw against Middlesbrough, it is difficult.
“They won 5-0 and it could have been more. They have won 3-0, 5-0 and 2-0 on the road recently, conceded one goal in the last five away games and scored 15.
“This is one of those games, because if they score two in the first 10 minutes it’s a long afternoon for you. But if you can stay in the game, have a few shots and get the crowd going you have a chance to put some doubts in their mind.
“That’s what we have to do and we have to stop their momentum forwards. We have to force them back towards their own goal, because if we set up defensively they will keep coming and they will score – because they are too good not too.
“We have to get Lampard and Deco running backwards, so if they do win it back they are 80 yards from your goal on the edge of their own box.”
Mowbray’s men will look to climb off the bottom of the table by shocking Luiz Filipe Scolari’s in-form side. Mowbray is looking forward to chewing the fat with the World Cup winning coach.
The Albion manager said: “I’m pretty sure he is a colourful guy who loves the game with a passion.”

Have a feeling this could be the biggest defeat of the season so far…I may even have a bet on us winning 6-0 ;)

If TM did indeed say this then it really is the last thing the team or the fans want to hear. Yes you’re playing Chelski, yes they are in a rich vein of form and yes you probably will get beaten. However, you and the team do not want to hear your manager sayng publicly that he fears Chelski will run riot !! i thought managers were supposed to talk things up. In my book if you go into something fearing the worst then the worst will happen. I know it will be a different side to the one Burnley faced but you have to go in without fear and yes, maybe try and rough them up a bit and try and throw them off balance. If you’re gonna go in expecting the worst from this one, you might as well not turn up.

No 6 – I’ve mentioned this before. Our GD is the worst by far – Chelsea’s is the best . It’s going to take a super-human effort for that gap not to be made even bigger. Maybe TM says Albion could be in for a hammering because he usually gets things wrong! I hope so. I’m not quite going for the “In Mowbray We Trust” mantra that many others bleat like sheep…

I think Peace is to blame for all this, if that bloke put his hands in his pocket maybe we would have a far more decent team to be taking on Chelsea. There is no grit and fight in this Albion team, if your gonna get beat get beat with putting a fight, pretty football dont make these teams think they have been in a game because they are better at it than us. Albion need a few who have got balls and who are gonna get stuck in for the cause and let teams know they have played a game. Look at Hull and Stoke good physical teams thats why they are doing well. Take no prisoners

No.7 The mantra….”in Mowbray we trust”,I agree it,s a nice sentiment but like you say ,maybe a bit to trusting. He doesn,t sound very confident for this Saturday,s match.Hope this lack of confidence doesn,t rub off much on the players.

3Filton.
We used to have BFR telling Liverpool we were going to beat them. Inevitably we didn’t. I’d rather have the low key approach but at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what TM says, it’s down to how we play.

It’s easy to look for a scapegoat but you saying ‘Peace should put his hand in his pocket,’ is like me saying that you should buy a million pound house. Books need to be balanced.
We’re not halfway through the season yet and we’re certainly not adrift. We’ve played a lot of our most difficult games. As Bomber said in his blog, we’ve dropped points that we shouldn’t have but we’re a young team and hopefully we will learn from this.

I bet it’s only being so happy that keeps you going.
