Villa consider joining Owen race

newcastle31.jpegVilla are considering joining the January scramble for Michael Owen as Martin O’Neill steps up his search for a solution to his striker shortage.

O’Neill has already confirmed he is prepared to spend when the transfer window reopens and morning reports suggest Newcastle’s Owen is on his list.

The Villa boss currently has just three senior strikers on his books  – John Carew, Gabby Agbonlahor and Marlon Harewood – and question marks remain over Harewood’s future.

O’Neill has therefore made at least one more forward his priority in the January sales and Owen, recently linked with Chelsea, could be available for the knockdown price of £5million, because he is in the final season of his contract.

Wigan’s Emile Heskey remains in the manager’s thoughts and he to could be available on the cheap, as his contract also expires next summer.

But a move for Reading’s Kevin Doyle looks a no go, after he signed a new deal with the Championship side.

Since when does signing a new contract stop you from being sold? Trust me being a wolves supporter we know that players signing long contracts means they can bargain for a better transfer fee! Lescott and Olifinjana a prime example…Doyle would do well at the Villa and is young and hungry! Unlike Owen and Heskey who are ending their careers and after one final pay day!

I wish people would stop banging on about Michael Owen being finished. Yes he has had injury problems but the guy has been written off so many times over his career and every single time he has proven the doubters wrong. Now I don’t know the real state of Owen’s health any more than the rest of us do but if he is capable of making a full recovery (and I’m sure MON wouldn’t buy him if he wasn’t) then we would have the best striker in the league on our books.

As for looking for a last pay cheque?? He’s 28 for crying out loud! On top of that, he has played so little football over the past few years that you could probably rate him even younger than that.

There is still a lot of milage left in Michael Owen and I have no doubt that he will score a great deal more goals in the Premiership and break the half century of goals for England.

On the flip side you could argue that Owen was over used at an early age and hence his legs have had it? Dodgy deal if it where to happen….nearly as dodgy as you off loading Tony Daley to ourselves and him lasting 3 months. Saying that though how ironic is it that he has turned out to be an outstandintg fitness coach! Onwards and upwards!

I cannot believe this!!!! Owen, Heskey, a has been and a never was.
Owen has been brilliant, I know that, I also think that 5mil is cheap for such a talent, but why pay his exorbatent wages just to have him sit in the stands because he is injured.
Heskey is a different animal altogether, on his day he can be lethal, trouble is, we never know what day that is going to be.
