Hands off for goalkeeping trio
Thursday 13th November 2008, 11:44AM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has warned off any potential predators eyeing a swoop on his star goalkeeping trio.
McCarthy has made it clear neither Carl Ikeme, Wayne Hennessey nor Matt Murray will be allowed to leave permanently.
The manager has laughed off recent speculation of unrest between him and Hennessey and also rumours linking him with a move. Heinsists all three keepers will remain at the club for the rest of the season.
McCarthy said: “Someone might be able to go out on loan, but there’s no way anyone will be leaving – not a chance.
“We’re trying to get promoted, so why would we dilute our squad in any shape or form? We’ll be trying to strengthen our squad, rather than dilute it.”
Murray’s departure to League One Hereford for a month is set to spark arguably the biggest battle for goalkeeping places in the club’s history.
At the moment, Ikeme is the No 1 after keeping Hennessey on the sidelines for the last seven games.
This has prompted Everton and Wales goalkeeping legend Neville Southall to suggest McCarthy is deliberately keep him out of the limelight, to avoid the prying eyes of the Premier League.
McCarthy said: “I’ve travelled around the world as a player at club and international level and I’ve never known a situation yet where everyone’s completely happy.
“But then that’s what competition for places is all about – if you only had 11 players, then you’d have 11 happy players.
“You wouldn’t have a very good team though, once you had injuries and suspensions. When they’re out, they have to fight like tooth and nail to get back in.”

Sorry, but one of them has to go. You can’t keep 3 class keepers.
I would gladly take 5 or 6 million for Hennessey. Carl Ikeme has been brilliant.
Good on ya Mick. Keep it going!
Who cares Mick, why dont you play Collins in goal eh ??
I wonder what Mr Moxey makes of that statement? Must have knocked his nose out of joint, but WELL SAID MICK, Just what the fans want to hear for a change. The Profit is in the prem, and thats where we are heading.
hennessey bye bye
Report abuse
This is good news, especially ‘we are trying to strengthen our squad’. Mick has had two brilliant Jan transfer windows to date,Kightly in 2007 and SEB plus Elokobi in 2008.What we need is another one in 2009.

1)We have ELEVEN internationals at the club at present, what do you want to do? Sell them as well?
I think I would sell Hennessey in January, If we can Murray fit. He did play all of the season before last and we got into the play-offs so he isn’t made of glass he is just unlucky. Ikeme looks pretty good and he can still develop. I just feel if we could get £7m-£8m for Henners then it would be worth letting him go. That’s alot of money to spend on outfield players should we get to the premier league.
SELL HENNESSEY FOR £7 TO £10 MILLION END OF STORY IKEM IS JUST AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER. MURRAY MAY GET FIT ONE DAY
Report abuse
Interesting to here him categorically saying all 3 will stay. But Why have the club said Murray will only be on Loan for a month. Coincidence Ties in with the transfer window.
may as well sell Murray as he will never saty fit for longer than a month!
Sell Ikeme in the window before his contract runs out and then put the Hen back in goal. Keepers of his quality are a dime a dozen and easily replaceable.
Wayne is head and shoulders above Ikeme and Murray. He will be the key to keeping us up.
I don’t think £7m or £8m is alot to spend on outfield players in the Prem !!!! If we want to stay up we will probably be spending that on 1 player if MM continues to buy British.
There is no point in selling Hen unless a stupid off comes in of £10m or if he is upsetting the dressingroom.
I say keep all 3, all class, Ikeme deserves his chance he’s been unlucky before now not to get a go.
If one starts shouting the odds then sell, simple as.
Mick knows them better than us he won’t simply sell one if a club comes in.
Wayne’s off to Spurs.
You heard it here first.
Bob the Nob – with that comment, all I can say is: At least you’re living upto your name.
Anyway – what a fantastic situation for us to be in, but also a very difficult one, which I think Mick is handling very well. Come the end of the season (if Murray is still fit), I’d sell Wayne and take the money to spend elsewhere, knowing we still have 2 top keepers. Too much of a risk selling him now with us not being sure about Matt’s fitness. As for who plays, I do think Wayne is the better keeper of him and Ikeme, so I’d probably go with him every time, but you can’t fault Ikeme – also, he does seem to grow more confident by the game.
The only benefit of selling Hennesey would be to finance a deal to bring in a quality player in another position where we have a weakness.
Ultimately one keeper will be sold whether that is in January or next summer time will tell.
reading into this i think Wayne Hennessey will go on loan to a top club and we will get a top player on load as part of the deal, sounds good buisness to me
Report abuse
What about the credit crunch,,,iff we can get decent millions for Wayne,,and as long as any money was invested back into players,,iff we are thinking about trying to keep Mancienne we are going to need a bob or two,,we have to be self financing because Mr Morgan has money but he doesnt like spending it,,so as I say iff we get a decent offer for Wayne, let him go…
Report abuse
awww c’mon wolvesmod i’ve been saying that for weeks now…
let hope we keep mancienne til season end and even fingers crossed get him perm.
will be really interesting to see how we play against southampton this weekend.
COME ON YOU WOLVES !
12) Disagree Matt Murray is the best British goalkeeper in the country (When Fit), and if he get back to any where near his best he will also be England’s number 1 goalkeeper.
So Mick was at Leicester City on Tuesday.
Any ideas who he watching .. ??
keep hennessy for christ sake .. he s our future…he looks every inch a premier keeper. as much as i like big matty murray . my heart used to be in my mouth at some championship games when he came to kick a ball out.. whats drogba or old twikle toes gonna make of that..eh ? breakfast mate thats what . ilkeme would be ok on the bench .. looks promising .no experience yet . yet to get injured and yet to make a bad mistake.loan matty out for rest of season and keep them all
Report abuse
I doubt we will be able to keep all three happy at the club. It will be difficult to even keep two quality keepers happy, let alone three!
Question is who should we keep? Much depends on Murray’s fitness. I think he is the best of the three and Hennesey is more proven than Ikeme. I’d sell Ikeme or loan him out for the rest of the season with a recall clause.
Remember Wayne got his chance when the other two were injured, both Carl and Matt are injury prone, Mick is quite right keeping all three, just look back over the last three years and see how many injuries they had, also we have had to get a keeper on loan last season because of lack of cover!
I still think MM’s bedding Ikeme in to fight it out with Matt Murray.
I also think he’s got his eye on 1 or 2 other keepers to bring in depending on Murrays fitness & obviously Hennessy will be sold for big money.
Like everyone else I’m only guessing but when you look at the players MM has signed for our club it’s difficult to argue with his judgement & reasons.
Is it to soon to say Premier here we come?
26.. ot is too soon to say premier here we come . look at watford a couple of seasons ago. and how old is the expression .. come down with the christmas decorarations ? we all want the same thing here . dont curse it
Report abuse
I will be going to each Hereford home game to watch Matt whilst he’s on loan there. If the bulls can score then they should start climbing off the foot of the table. Looking good at The Wolves – fingers crossed it keeps going for the rest of the season and beyond !!
Hennessey is going to tottenham in january and we are having rouledge as part of the deal – his agent has been talkin up a move and MM got fed up of it and decided to give ikeme the experince so that come january we wont miss out plus matt murray should be ok by then – i heard this from a very very good source at the club!
mm has admitted that he has only one left back at the moment, whereas he has 2 players fighting for other positions. could he be thinking of trading Hen for another left back? could be interresting!
Id like to say well done to Bobby Mimms for nurturing the talend we have in all 3 goalies – sell hennessey to spurs for 7mill and we can still go up
Report abuse
29. routledge is at villa not spurs
Report abuse
At the end of the day its up to the player. If a prem club comes in with an offer all we can do is slap a big price tag on him.Seen some pretty dreadful goalkeeping over the last week or so, even Van der Saar so it woudnt suprise me at all if one of the big boys came in
Report abuse
32. lol – top tip finchy! Have any good racing tips straight from the stables??
I cannot believe people/idiots on here believe matt shud b sold.like italian wolf z above he is by far the best british goalkeeper.i wud gladly take 6 to 10 mill for hennesy as i fully believe ikeme and murray are better.and spend that money on permanently signing mancienne.nuf z i wud drive hennesy to spurs 4 dat money.murray is by far the better keeper at the club.magic mickks gold and black army
Report abuse
no no no dont sell hennessey if we sell him we will basically be operating with 1 keeper ikeme, matt is to injury prone i hope he can stay fit but can you really see him making it through his months loan without breaking down again i can,t but i hope he does he is by far the best of the 3 keepers so good luck matt hope it goes well and the injuries are behind you,BUT PLEASE DONT SELL HENNESSEY,WE ARE WOLVES
Report abuse
posh wolf hennesy head and shoulders above murray and ikeme.?have u actually watched or ever seen murray play?hennesy isnt fit to clean his boots
Report abuse
Yes Matt Murray may be the best goalkeeper at the club – but fat lot of good that is if he’s injured 90% of the time! Rather have two fit keepers than one who may be better but never plays.
On a completely different thread……
After the events at Stamford Bridge last night, hands up those who think that :
a) Wolves is the best team in England
b) Burnley’s poor showing on Sat. (after a string of quality results) may have been due to their minds being on other matters and not totally on the task in hand.
Also, hands up those who think if we played the same Chelsea team tomorrow we would :
a) Get spanked
b) Administer the spanking.
Take the money for Wayne, keep Matt & Carl
Report abuse
wayne will be playing for everton in january…
Report abuse
we are in a lucky situation, we all agree we have 3 decent keepers.
where we may differ is who we think the better keeper.
i like wayne but did make couple errors before injury but will only get better with experience.
carl has done well and taken his chance and again will only improve with the more games he plays.
matt was pure class before injuries and hopefully months loan will start him on the road to match fitness and back to his peak
would be nice to keep all 3,
but this depends on a few factors,
like if we get promoted this season then i think all 3 will stay,
if anyone gets injured then again this changes things,
if the player is that unhappy puts in a transfer quest.
also if a big money offer, too good to refuse comes in for say wayne.
i can’t see anyone being allowed to leave before the end of the season, and it will then depend where we are premiership or championship.
to be honest i am happy with any of the 3 between the posts.
come on the wolves!!!!
sorry boys meant to say villa hahaha
Report abuse
5 Million for MrH and we can keep Mr. M seems like good business to me–Good luck guys keep it going–Crazey Dave

12) Absolute rubbish. By far the best goalkeeper at the club is Murray. As far as Ikeme and Hennessey is concerned, there is not much in it. Hennessey’s major problem is governing his box.
He could be sold in January and I would take it if it means buying Mancienne!
3) We can always have your keeper Bob and he can follow in the footsteps of his legendary father Frank, as a stand up comic. He caused many a laugh for the Sweaties with his howler v Croatia.
A regular spot at the Terrace Bar beckons!
Why sell if we sold anyone of them we would have to replace him.agree we have the best three keepers outside the prem and possibly better than
most in the prem. you have to replace him with a keeper of the same or better quality.can anyone name anyone who would come to wolves and possibly be 2nd or 3rd pick?
22-Mattock the left back, jointly the creator of relegated Leicesters tremendous goals against record with Stearman. Get him in MM, we know Ward tries hard but is not up to it.
Sell hennessey
Get Mancienne on a permanent (as roman is hoarding his pennies)
Give Ikeme a new contract
Report abuse
Ur all priks. Henners is our best keeper and u know it. when he’s at his best he’s amazing. Murry is mint when fit and Ikeme is class at times and class at mo. Keep them all until they do someting bad then sell them. AS for prem we’re only a quarter of da way into season so don’t count your chickens, but we are playin class. If we do get 2 prem it’s not like we aint got the money anyway therefore quit the talk of selling players. Plus u get plenty for 1st place in league. We’re improving on what we’ve got therefore we need 2 keep our best playes. £8m for henners and then spend it, know way we’ll get more than that off Stevey Morgan so >>KEEP<< HENNESSEY. HEEEENNESSEY!, HEEEENNESSEY!
just changing the subject a second … if we need cover for the wingers y dnt we get ismail demontanac from walsall he has been sacked today, he is a quality nplayer and i think super mick would sort him out all day long ……why not :) good cover init.
Hmmm, if we could only keep one of Mancienne or Hennessy what would you do ?
At the moment I’d keep Mancienne as we have Murray as a backup (?) goalie – I say backup but he’s better than Ikeme, just not match fit, whereas Mancienne is way better than Collins.
ikeston wolf, how is ward not up to it ??
ive hardly seen him do a thing wrong this season.
im not saying we should sell, but ikeme camands the box much better than wayne, and he can kick, i believe he will be the future, i sit there watching henessy and im frightened to death, when a cross comes in or a corner, but with ikeme im pretty confident, does anyone agree,
Report abuse
49. Took the words right off my keyboard!
Some of you are plain nuts! Matt is a class keeper but so high risk to injury you cannot rely on him. So imagine we sell Hennessey in JanUary and Matt gets injured? Next game Carl gets sent off for a professional foul. This WILL happen! Keep all three and remove all risk.
28- Er why aint you coming to Molineux ???
Whats these comments about left backs, or lack of, if you include Wardy, which you have to, we have 3 here that are fit, how many do we need????
We need cover for both wingers, they are the only positions where we lack real strength in depth.
No18, spot on comment fella.
We have too many good players. We must sell one of them. Hilarious. The only time they should sell is when one asks to leave. They won’t all be happy for long. Murray can’t really expect anything until he stays fit for a year. Ikeme will be enjoying his taste after waiting so long, so if he ends up third in the pecking order again I would expect him to seek football somewhere else, otherwise it would be going backwards for him. As for Wayne, the bloke is number one for his country, he made one mistake and has not played since. He knows Prem clubs are looking at him. He won’t keep the bench warm for too long. So really it is up to the players. I don’t think there is much between the 3 of them, so I expect it will boil down to character.
As for Morgan not liking to spend his money, I bet he has not said no to one player that Mick has asked for so far. If there was a doubt over one now, all the manager has to do is point to the table. It has taken time but I cant remember the last time our squad looked as strong as this one.
most of you have put in some good points but all this talk about selling one of our keepers is a little daft.do we need to sell??
1 Have anyone of them put in for a move?
2 if we do sell who would we have for cover if our first choice gets injured. we still need one on bench
3 we have not realy spent any of morgans money
mancienne must be top of our xmas wish list without selling our keepers.

Hey guy’s. Just spoke to a leicester mate of mine and he reckons big Mick was at Leicester this week to watch Joe Mattock. Thought you might be interested to know that.
