Iwelumo joy at chance of a fresh start
Wednesday 12th November 2008, 12:20PM GMT.
Wolves striker Chris Iwelumo today revealed his delight at remaining in the Scotland squad for the glamour friendly against Diego Maradona’s Argentina – with a ‘clean slate’ after his horror miss.
Iwelumo is included in boss George Burley’s 26-man party for the Hampden clash against the twice world champions on November 19 after becoming Wolves’ 11th international call-up.
The 30-year-old, who has scored 10 goals for Wolves this season, saw his first cap against Norway last month overshadowed by his miss from four yards which was subsequently replayed over and over again.
But the former Charlton target man is anxious to put that behind him as he returns to the same venue, and could even form part of a West Midlands past and present attack with Rangers’ former Wolves striker Kenny Miller and Birmingham’s James McFadden.
“What happened last time has gone – I’m going with a clean slate in my head and have just got to go there and prove myself and show what I’m about,” said Iwelumo.
“I’m delighted that I’ve stayed in the squad, I’m buzzing. Everyone wants to represent their country and I’m no different.
“There are a few new names in the squad as well and I think the gaffer will probably take a look at a few different things.
“I’m looking forward to it and am just focused on getting myself flying for Saturday.
“I thought I did OK last time and of course it would have been nice to have topped it off with a goal, but it wasn’t to be.
“I’m just glad I’ve got back to myself now and am just looking forward to all the games that are coming thick and fast.
“It’s up to myself to put things right but at the same time I’m not going to be putting too much pressure on myself.”
