Bonser: Winter freeze is coming

Tuesday 11th November 2008, 11:27AM GMT.

bonser2.jpgJeff Bonser is warning Walsall fans he will have to “batten down the hatches” as the League One club braces itself for the impact of the recession.

Bonser says any supporters dreaming of a significant transfer activity in January are “living in cloud cuckoo land” following another reminder from Saddlers fans that football is taking a back seat in their spending plans.

The 2,318 gate for Saturday’s FA Cup defeat sent another wave of gloom through the club.

A tough winter approaches with Saddlers knocked out of the potential money-spinning Cup competition, dawdling in mid-table and fans growing increasingly disenchanted.

“It’s time to batten down the hatches I’m afraid,” says Bonser. “Anyone who thinks football is immune to the economic climate has taken leave of their senses.

“It is in inevitable the game will suffer. We are suffering in our attendances, which are running at 25 per cent down on what we projected when we planned our budgets in March.

“Those figures have already gone out the window. And anyone who is expecting a transfer spree in January is living in cloud cuckoo land.

“We are suffering in banqueting and conferences, which is an important part of our revenue as well.

“This is absolutely no criticism of the fans who are staying away. People are frightened about losing their jobs and planning for the necessities. Football is an entertainment and it is one of the first things people cut out in this climate.”

Nothing entertaining about Walsall at the moment. Get in the real world Bonser. Better still get out of Walsall and take your top man, our ex used car salesman with you.

If JB thinks that the 25% drop in attendances is due entirely to the economic situation, then he must also be living in cloud cuckoo land.

Another statement that shows why the club is losing fans, I have the money but I just don’t want to line his pockets any longer, especially after the let down of his managerial appointment.
As blogger Mark Jones says “Walsall F.C at the moment resembles a terminally ill close relative” and the disease is one Jeff Bonser.

25% drop compared to 5% drop nationally. There’s more to this than the credit crunch – The E&S isn’t interested in that story though.

Jeff, once again, proves that he has completely lost touch with reality. If he thinks that the 25% loss in gates this season is as a result of the economic situation, then he is sadly mistaken.
While the credit crunch is part of the answer, it cannot explain why we have lost so many more fans than other similar clubs.
I’m afraid that it also doesn’t explain why so many of the missing fans are those that have been going twenty years or more. No, the real reason they are missing is that they are finally fed up with broken promises and over £350,000 a year ground rent going out of the club. They are fed up with 400,000 profits, while the club’s debts rise by half a million (but we’re still “well run”, apparantly). They are fed up with any young talent being sold cheaply (Dann and Fryatt were worth more) and no attempt being made to bring in adequate replacements.
In short, Jeff, it’s you they are fed up of.

What arrogance from the man. I sent the figures for attendances for the whole league one to him 2 weeks ago, which shows we have the biggest loss, and are 14.8% above the average losss on crowds. He is divorced from reality. Pathetic – and he wonders why we are losing fans.

FAO NEIL MASHITER – Neil, it would endear you to many to start asking questions about the pension fund and ridiculous statements this man comes out with. I refer to you UTS, look at the proposed AGM questions – they are the ones we want answering, will we get them? No chance.

There WILL be significant transfer activity:

    Deeney to Chester – £0
    Nicholls to Hereford – £0
    Weston to Scunthorpe – £10
    Boertien to Colchester – £5
    Bradley to Rochdale – £0
    Ishmel to Leeds – £3

Danny Sonner to Walsall – £Waste
Tony Bedeau to Walsall – £Laughable
Unknown Foreign Goalkeeper who later plays on the wing – £WHO?

For the record. I have the money and I want to spend it on “entertainment” but won’t get value for money at Walsall.

Spot on supersaddlers, Neil Ravenscroft & Darren Rhodes.

Bonser just WILL NOT accept that the biggest reason for the massive drop in attendances is HIMSELF. We’re sick and tired of your little outbursts where you try and pin the blame on anyone but yourself.

Your self-interest all those years ago is now killing this club and yet you make pathetic excuse after pathetic excuse.

Name your price for the club and land once and for all and lets see if we can part company before you finally run the club into the ground.

Jeff no body is expecting a spending spree in January, theres more chance of Saddam Hussein coming in as goalkeeping coach.

PEOPLE ARE STAYING AWAY BECAUSE OF YOU JEFF. YOU. Not the economic climate, not global warming, not the migration patterns of northern european geese, YOU.

Just sell the club, you’ve done enough damage. Good riddance.

Cloud-cuckoo land eh? Well Jeff, here’s a bit of advice for you, if you think I’m renewing my season ticket in this economic climate, you’ve ‘taken leave of YOUR senses’. Wonder if Jeff will reduce the ground rent during these difficult times he spouts about? Over to you Jeff.

Success brings in crowds – it has been proven for many years. Irrespective of turbulent times and cash shortages, people have always found money to go to the game because it’s in our blood. As a season ticket holder i’ve become disillusioned and depressed. I paid for the game on Saturday in the belief that we will turn the corner, but frankly i’m now of the opinion that whilst Mullen is in charge we will never do any good. I just wish I could get a refund on the remaining matches as I no longer want to go to the matches. Shame really as I believe that we have one of the best squads we have had for a number of years.

Presumably as property prices plummett, and there is less money around in football we can fully expect the “market rent” that the football club is charged by Mister Bonser’s pension fund to reflect said market and drop accordingly?

Whoops, just passed a sign that said “welcome to cloud cookoo land”.

Note to Jeff: good to see you employ a few more clichés to sum up the mental state of dissenting fans at Walsall. However, haven’t we had “taken leave of their senses” before? What about “if Walsall fans think there will be significant transfer activity in January they are crazy like a fox”.

Me missing a home match on Saturday for the first time in 4 years had nothing to do with the economic climate and everything to do with the drivel we’ve been putting up with on the pitch.

I think Mr Bonser needs to stop trying to find excuses and look a bit closer to home if he wants to sort things out (which, incidentally, that interview does not suggest he’s interested in doing).

Walsall not having a spending spree in January??? Whats that in comparison to? The three or four cheap loan signings that we get with no intention of ever signing.

Jeff you have shot yourself in the foot, by continuing to pocket the money that we all work so hard to get- to spend on our beloved team (which is being ripped apart by yourself and the car dealer).

Never mind Jeff- sell Gerrard and Taundry in January like you had planned, then blame the “current 18/19 year olds that dont love you” and in the process “we will go and support Luton, Rotherham or Bournemouth”

Just turn the light off once you have killed the club Mr B.

Jeff Bonser has the nerve to blame the credit crunch for what is going on at Walsall FC, what a joke.
I know loads of people that now will not come to games, simply because of the crap we are playing on the pitch.

He bought in another Puppet in Mullen, that he can sell the fact, we have no money. He takes it, the fans wont!

But he hasnt a clue anyway. The tactics are awful, the players are out of position, what chance have we got?

Bonser always looks for the cheapest possible option. What manager with anything about them is going to come to the Bankss? We are certainly going to be fighting relegation. I also think it will be a losing fight this time. Walsall FC. RIP

This guy is laughable! I have been going down the Walsall for 26 years in which I have had a season ticket every year. I used to go away as much as I did home, hence I did not miss a game.

I am totally saddened by the state of affairs down there. This season I have found myself actually missing a Saturday afternoon game, even though I have a season ticket!! This would be going against the ‘religion’ that was Walsall FC back in the day!

The reasons or should I say reason for this are quite simple- Jeff Bonser. This man has, make no illusions about it, made an absolute fortune out of this club and continues to do so. He will eventually bleed the club for all its got if he hasn’t already!! The ambition and the friendly faces I used to see down both Fellows Park and the Bescot (‘Banks’??!) stadium have already been driven away.

If you are reading this Jeff, which I doubt you are as you do not have the courtesy to reply even to letters, then please PUT THE CLUB UP FOR SALE, with the GROUND, at a price that would reflect the current economic climate.

You can then get on your fantastic helicopter and jet off to your sunny retirement home in Cyprus and Walsall FC can start repairing the damage that YOU have slowly been destroying over the years.

P.S – E & S – have a look around the fans websites and you will see the real reasons people are staying away!!

I see from the Swain Blog that we’re all discontented 18/19 year olds that don’t know what Bonser has done for us?

Strange then that I’m 38 and been going to Walsall games for 22 years and I sussed Bonser out years ago.

You keep kidding yourselves the discontent is just a bunch of kids Bonser. Tell you what, next year I WILL NOT be buying season tickets for me and my two kids, regardless if the credit crunch affects me or not.
