Royal couple are memorial guests

Monday 10th November 2008, 10:07AM GMT.

Final preparations are underway at the National Memorial Arboretum for the arrival of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent tomorrow.

The royal couple will be among the guests at tomorrow’s Armistice Day service at the arboretum near Lichfield.

The event will mark the 90th anniversary of the Armistice, which signalled the end of the First World War. The arboretum is playing a key role in national commemorations taking place tomorrow.

Well-known tunes from the WW1 era, performed by the Band of HM Royal Marines, Plymouth, will get the day’s events underway.

The ticket-only service will be led by the former Bishop to the Armed Forces, the Right Reverend John Kirkham.

Proceedings within the Armed Forces Memorial will be relayed on big screens to crowds in the arboretum’s Leonard Cheshire Ampitheatre.

At precisely 11am, to signal the two minute silence, a shaft of sunlight will fall from the slot cut into the walls of the Armed Forces Memorial and will strike its central plinth. At midday three Tornados will take to the sky above the arboretum, acknowledging the 90th anniversary of the Royal Air Force.

The grounds of the arboretum will be open to the public tomorrow, but there are no further tickets available for the service.

Members of the public will be able to access the Armed Forces Memorial from 12.30pm onwards.

The arboretum is operating a park and ride scheme from Catton Hall for £2.
