Super speed traps on the way
Saturday 8th November 2008, 9:40PM GMT.
Revolutionary speed warning signs fitted with cameras to capture details of motorists breaking the limit are set to be introduced in Walsall.
Council chiefs aim to buy two of the electric signs which will be the first of their kind in the West Midlands. There are only five of their kind in the country and they flash up drivers’ speed to encourage them to slow down.
But the kit is also able to record number plates and drivers who breach the speed limit will have their details sent to police.
If the driver is caught flouting the speed limit three times they receive a £60 fine.
Walsall Council bosses have set aside around £20,000 for the cameras which could first be used on the main Broadway route.
If successful they could then be rolled out across the borough and the rest of the West Midlands to reduce the number of accidents.
Councillor Anthony Harris, cabinet member for transport, said: “There are currently none of these in the West Midlands and only four or five in the whole country.
“It tells motorists the speed they are travelling and if they continue to ignore the limit they will be hit with a fine.
“This is not about raising money we just want to reduce accidents on the road.”
A review of existing speed cameras in Walsall is currently being undertaken by highways bosses.
It follows concerns by Councillor Harris that some cameras were “cash cows” and only there to generate funds for the treasury.
The Express & Star revealed last month that more than half the speed cameras were out of action.
