Wolves goalkeeper off to Hereford

Friday 7th November 2008, 11:56AM GMT.

training5.jpegMatt Murray is off to League One’s rock bottom club Hereford on loan – as Wolves boss Mick McCarthy stays firm in the battle of the goalkeepers.

Murray is set to finally get his chance of a month’s first team football under former Molineux boss Graham Turner, after Carl Ikeme’s minor back injury scuppered a similar move to MK Dons.

McCarthy said: “They’re in the FA Cup this weekend (against Dagenhan and Redbridge) but he’ll go in time for next weekend. I’ve talked to Graham Turner and we hope we can make that happen.

“He just needs some football and it will be good for him to get a month’s football, then we’ll see how he is.”

Murray will make his Hereford debut at home to Cheltenham next Saturday.

The news comes as McCarthy again felt forced to explain his exclusion of Wayne Hennessey at the expense of Ikeme for the visit of Burnley.

He said: “If anyone tells me Carl Ikeme shouldn’t be in the nets then I’m willing to stand up and have the argument with them, because he’s been outstanding apart from one mistake against Norwich.

“Other than that, he’s been outstanding. I want that pressure on my players. I understand Wayne’s disappointment, but right from early on, he’s been brilliant.”

Good news for both Matt and Carl. Just because Hennessey is now first choice for Wales doesn’t mean he’s automatic for us. If you’ve got the shirt and play well you should keep it.

I am with you all of the way Mick on this one. Just because you are first choice for Wales, you do not walk straight back in the side. I am far more confident from corners with Ikeme in goal.
As for Murray, Hereford are sure to have an upturn in fortune with one of the best keepers in the country between the sticks!

I think Hennessey is a terrific keeper but the other two are also excellent. There is no way in the world that you can keep all three happy and therefore one of them needs to go. Ikeme would earn us very little money due to his lack of exposure to league football and Murray’s injury record would keep his transfer fee very low. If we get up this year then I think you have to sell Murray in the hop ethat this will keep Hennessey with us. If we fail then Hennessay needs to go as he can earn us many £millions – I really don’t think there is a huge gulf between nay of them and therefore the money could be a great boost for us. Even if we go up we will only be able to hold onto Wayne for a short while – who wouldn’t want champions league football?

    2. Just not practical to keep a player of his age, ability and experience playing 45 minutes now and again in reserves.

Give him his chance and get him back – match fit – when we need him! Will also test his ability stay injury-free which I think we all worry about! IMO

Is it me or is this a case of making sure Ikeme is good enough so that we can sell Hennessey in January? Murray will be back in goal as soon as he is match fit (rightly so!) with Ikeme as backup and then we will have 5 million plus from Hennessey to strengthen elsewhere? It makes no sense to try and keep 3 good keepers.

Good maagement MM, to play the man in form who is Ikeme and not Hennesey. Good managers are never afraid to drop good players when they arent doing it. Wenger dropped lehmann in favour of Almunia last season. Ferguson drops tevez in favour of bergotov this season.
hennessey knew he would have stiff competition this season both at wolves and wales and has to fight for his place.

Nice to see Turner getting some payback for all he has done for us in the past. Would be fantastic to see Murray back fully fit but I’ve got a nasty feeling that we’ve seen the last full season out of him. Hennessey won’t reach his peak for five years yet and by that time only the top two or three clubs could afford him.

Class keepers do not need games to be match sharp.

Match sharpness for a class keeper is between the ears and is always there. Only match fitness is an issue and for a keeper, can be aquired in the gym and on the training ground.

If Murray is match fit he is fit to play for us tomorrow.

The only reason to send him out on loan is to give him the chance to break down. We need to know where we stand with the goalkeepers by January.

Ikeme has let in 13 goals in 7games.If he has been brilliant, like Mick says, what does that say for the rest of the defenders. We are doing great, top of the league and full of goals,BUT we have got to get real about the failures in defence. If not it could well cost us promotion.Think back has to how Lescott,Butler, Irwin and Murray defended in that play off final.

    15. Well Liz, you seem well informed. No chance of SEB going anywhere other than the Premiership with Wolves and then he’ll stay . However, if we don’t get promoted, it may make sense to sell him, he is good enough for the Premiership. After some of his recent comments, has he not said that he will happily sign for the rest of his career? Anyway, to the keepers position, MM will always be a fitness liability however well he plays when he is fit, just see how many games he has played since he signed Pro forms. Ikeme has the shirt on merit, maybe Mick sees something in Ikeme that neither Matt or Wayne possess, the ability to come out of his 6 yard box and collect the ball. All three of them still need to learn how to kick out of their hands though! Good win tomorrow please.

Murray will get injured out at Hereford because he is too injury prone. Hennessey should be playing, and fans should get off his back, you were all quick enough to worship him last year and give him player of the season…if i was WH, i would want to leave in Jan. Lets hope he doesnt read the fans comments on here….
