Stoke boss backed by McCarthy
Friday 7th November 2008, 2:41PM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has backed Stoke counterpart Tony Pulis over Arsene Wenger’s blast that the Potters deliberately set out to injure Arsenal players.
Furious Gunners boss Wenger claimed that Bakari Sagna, Theo Walcott and Emmanuel Adebayor were deliberately crocked by Pulis’ players Rory Delap and Ryan Shawcross in last week’s stormy 2-1 win for Stoke.
Wenger likened the Stoke players to “cowards” but Pulis has defended his players and McCarthy has now joined the debate.
He said: “I won’t get involved in other manager’s arguments but all I will say is that Tony Pulis’ teams are competitive.
“I’ve never had to complain about them being over-competitive, over-zealous or being nasty. I saw the game and that wasn’t the case.”
“We can’t all play like Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, so we have to use whatever attributes, skills or armoury we can.
“But I don’t think Stoke were over the top.”

I live in Stoke and despise the fact that they are doing ok in the prem. Seven of their 11 goals so far have come from the bloke with the name like a pneumatic tyre!! You know they still make me laugh when they claim they are the biggest club in the Midlands rather than just Stoke-on-Trent.

I have to say I didnt see the game but became interested when Wrighty and Durham were banging on about it on talk sport one evening. To hear them you would have thought the tackles were something out of hammer house of horror. Having seen them since – I cant beleive the hype !! Delaps was simply mistimed and was the sort of tackle we see all the time. The other tackle was late and merited a yellow card – but not malicious. I quite like Wenger as a manager and he is fervent Arsenal through and through – thats good for them ….but to bleat like this is not good. Stoke won – get over it !! Just hope we are playing Arsenal next season ;-)

Wenger has always had terrible double standards. Every football manager is going to be biased to their side, that’s a given, but AW is notoriously selective with his vision. I love to watch Arsenal play, they have a style which is terrific to watch, but next time you see them notice how they fall over whenever they lose possession. I’ve never seen a team win so many 50/50 free-kicks. So AW ALWAYS moans when they don’t get them (ie when they lose!!). Viera was the peerless master at this and they’ve never replaced him.
