Robbers’ sentences are extended

Thursday 6th November 2008, 11:34AM GMT.

Two robbers already serving lengthy prison sentences for stealing a £45,000 Porsche at gunpoint have had their time in jail extended for their parts in an armed car-jacking and betting shop robbery.

Ryan Kirk, of Shireland Road, Smethwick, and Liam Ford, of Worcester Road, Oldbury, stole the supercar from a home in Meadow Road, Edgbaston, at 9am on October 5, 2006.

At Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday, years were added to the pair’s sentences for their roles in stealing a £25,000 VW Golf at gunpoint on September 27, 2006 and an armed raid on William Hill bookies, in Londonderry Road, Oldbury, a day later.

Mr Shane Crawford, prosecuting, said the VW Golf was stolen after its owner pulled on to his driveway in Clay Lane, Oldbury, at 1am following a shift at a Chinese restaurant.

Mr Crawford said the driver was repeatedly punched and threatened with a black pistol before the gang got into the car and sped off.

The car was used just a few hours later as the getaway vehicle in the betting shop raid, which happened at midday and involved four men in masks.

The first robber burst into the shop, mounted the counter and ordered the manager to empty the safe.

Kirk, aged 25, and Ford, 20, were arrested on October 5 after returning to the Porsche they had earlier abandoned. Armed police chased the supercar, which eventually crashed into a lamppost and Kirk was detained.

Ford fled from the car but was arrested after getting tangled in barbed wire as he tried to clear some bushes.

Mr Nicholas Smith, defending Ford, said his client was a foolish 18-year-old at the time who had gone on a “stupid criminal spree”.

Mr Mark Jackson, defending Kirk, said his client had pleaded guilty to the crimes and was making “good progress” in prison.

Kirk was jailed for eight-and-a-half years for the Porsche car-jacking. Yesterday, Judge Michael Challinor sentenced him to a further nine years to be served concurrently. Ford was given a seven-and-a-half year youth sentence back in 2007 and was handed a 10-year-sentence to be served concurrently. As it is concurrent they will serve the longer sentence of the two they have been given.

Both had previously pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of an imitation firearm.

Judge Challinor said: “You have pleaded guilty to some extremely serious offences.

“The car robbery had a number of aggravating features – violence was used, it was a group attack and a pistol was pointed at the victim’s head.

“The William Hill robbery was even more serious – guns were discharged and there was a gang of men, one of whom made threats to kill.”
