Just days after the popular Strykers bowling alley closed its doors in Bushbury for the last time, the Express & Star can offer a glimpse inside its new £2.5 million home set to open in Bentley Bridge.
Scores of workers are busily putting fixtures and fittings in place at the new AMF Bowling centre. Futuristic neon lighting, silver baubles and hot pink walls are all waiting to greet visitors when the attraction officially opens its doors to the public on November 27.
Formerly Healthland, a gym with two swimming pools, the building closed two-and-a-half years ago with the loss of 50 jobs before falling into a state of disrepair and being badly vandalised. But now, the 26,000 sq ft venue is shaking off its past and getting ready to roll into a bright new future, bringing 40 jobs with it.
The centre will boast a 22-lane computerised bowling alley, a modern bar, diner and video arcade.
It will also host X-treme bowling nights, when ultra-violet lights will illuminate the lanes, balls will glow in the dark and lights will “dance” in time with music.
Bosses are hoping customers will be well and truly bowled over by the new design and the service on offer. Centre manager Dave Williams said it was an exciting project to work on. “It’s got 22 lanes for state-of-the-art bowling technology,” he said, adding the attraction’s special selling point would be its emphasis on service. “The thing that really sets us apart from other bowling alleys will be our lane hosts,” he said.
“Normally, when you go in you check in at reception and you’re told to go to your lane and set yourself up there.
“We’re planning to offer a service where lane hosts take customers to their lane, set them up and then serve them by bringing drinks and food to them.”
Jon Smith, national sales and marketing manager for AMF, revealed: “We have lots of activities planned to celebrate our opening, from family fun days to corporate events.”
The former Strykers in Shaw Road closed on Monday. Work has been under way at the new site since September.
