It’s Obama – your views

Wednesday 5th November 2008, 6:32AM GMT.

wd3127793barack-obama-mic.jpgDemocratic Senator Barack Obama has been elected the first black president of the United States – but how will the result affect you?

Mr Obama captured the key battleground states of Pennsylvania and Ohio, before breaking through the winning threshold of 270 electoral college votes at 4am, when projections showed he had also taken California and a slew of other states.

Then came the news that he had also seized Florida, Virginia and Colorado – all of which voted Republican in 2004 – turning swathes of the map from red to blue.

However, the popular vote remains close. Latest figures show Obama on 51.3 per cent against 47.4 per cent for Arizona Senator John McCain.

Now we want you to tell us what it means to you – will the arrival of an African American in The White House change the world? Will the result mean changes to the political landscape in this country? Does what happens in America actually matter to the people of this country?

Whatever your views post your comments using the form below. We’ll print them on-line and in Wednesday’s Express & Star.

Well done Barack, I am now hopeful for some changes in the future…Iraq, illegal detainment of terror suspects, bully boy foreign policy, lack of social inclusion…I could go on. One of my American friends got spat at a year ago on the continent just because he looked like a yank, he blamed the Bush factor and I had to agree with him, perhaps now we can begin to change the perceptions…most American citizens are great people.

I believe that this was long overdue, and to the people putting the guy down before he has even begun, why don’t you keep your mouths shut till he makes a mistake, and if he doesn’t get it right first time would he be any different to all the other clowns who took office before him?

I have no doubt that Senator Barack Obama, will make decisions that wont be popular or right at times, god knows we all now leaders like that here in the UK, but what counts is how a person reacts when he gets it wrong, our leaders just lie their way out of situations like that, instead owning up to the fact that they got it wrong, I don’t believe for one minute that he is a guy that would even try to do that, he knows too many people are watching his every move, and waiting to put the knife in.

One good thing has come out of Barack Obama winning this position, it will stop Black and Asian people from using the colour of their skin as an excuse when they don’t make the grade, this clearly sends out the message, it doesn’t matter the colour of your skin, if you have the ability there is no limit to how high you can rise.

    Good Luck Barack Obama

Martin Davies your comment “some will have voted for Obama BECAUSE of the colour of his skin” the reason why they voted is irrelevant, what is more important is the fact that they did vote, unlike here in the UK.

Another aspect that should be noted is the fact that people of all races and creeds, are allowed too have a free vote in the USA, unlike places like Zimbabwe.

Personally I feel that the USA, like the UK causes as many problems as it solves, but there is no disputing the fact that it’s the land of the free, and can now give unequivocal proof that for anyone with the right ability, there is no reason why you cant rise to the topmost position in the US government.

antony j, “ he will be like all the other prez,s worse than useless” wow your obviously a psychic who can read the future, can you tell us what other predictions you have made that have been proved accurate? I am fascinated in people like Nostradamus.

I stood next to Barry at Cleveland Airport some years ago and he was on his own, not having made the spotlight back then, but I knew of him and he left an impression with me -
Anyone coming over to the US for a holiday, try to spend a day in Selma Alabama, this will open your eyes to what realy went on back then around 1964.

I think he’s a globalist puppet. He’s hardly said anything, his track record is highly questionable. The media exposure – like the corporate backing – seems absurd. His race and his character overwhelmingly residing over his policies which, on election night, were practically non-existent despite the 6 hour coverage.

America is no longer the land of the free – the banks and the global corporation own that country. These same entities want to carve up the remaining areas of natural wilderness to build a highway; they want illegal immigration and illegal wars. If they destroy the country in the process, so be it. There is little difference between left and right at the top, just right and wrong.

He’s got a little time yet to formalise his policies. Don’t forget, he’s also got to get Congress and Senate to agree before he can do some things.
Their presidency has quite a bit of power in the small things, and in war, but less power (and some influence) over larger things. Thats where Congress and the senate come in.

Our system is somewhat different – as we usually have the PM with a ruling majority in parliament.

A global disaster in the making. His policy on the Middle East where he wants to sit down around the table and gently persude the despot leader of Iran that the building of nuclear weapons really isn’t playing fair. Is like sitting down with the school bully and telling him what a cad and a bounder he is. At least George W. knew that holding a clenched fist to N.Korea, Iran, Afghanistan and all made sure that they knew they had a force to be reckoned with and they could not rule by oppression and force over their own people.

You don’t need bombs, just economics. Despite wishing to ‘bring the troops home’ and ‘stop interfering’, by his own admission this guy is a globalist. He wants open borders and his presidency is but one more step towards a single world order..yep, the (fake) Republicans were also calling for this. Missiles or dollars..same thing when it comes to crippling people (including Americans), unless they comply. Obama is a defilement of the American Constitution, who is using a false pretext (youth, race, vigour), to get what he wants. If it came down to policy things would have been different IMO.

John, loved your comment “I THINK HE’S A GLOBALIST PUPPET. HE’S HARDLY SAID ANYTHING, HIS TRACK RECORD IS HIGHLY QUESTIONABLE”

Ever heard the saying “Actions speak louder than words”????????

Are you saying you prefer people like Tony Blaire? Remember? “Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime” we have had to have a turnstile system in our British prisons, you have to let one out before you can lock another up, and of course there was Maggie holding her shopping basket up, after she put 3 million on the dole, and sold off all our industries and stripped the country of its assets, after her rule we had to sell the shopping basket to survive because we couldn’t afford anything to put inside it.

Then there was Gordon, they keep saying he was the best chancellor ever, so why did he steal all that money from our pension fund to keep the country afloat???? shame he didn’t use his own pension fund, and wouldn’t it be nice if he actually paid tax on his pension when he picks it up, like all us workers in the UK have to do???? So yes while they were all mouth, none of them had the interests of the British people at heart.

In 4 years time I may well be condemning Barack Obama as the most useless president that ever held office, but as yet, to me he is able to walk on water, in 4 years time I will be able to make an informed decision based on actual facts and his track record, not on my own hate filled obsession to put people down.

Expat in Desert, “AT LEAST GEORGE W. KNEW THAT HOLDING A CLENCHED FIST TO N.KOREA, IRAN, AFGHANISTAN AND ALL MADE SURE THAT THEY KNEW THEY HAD A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH AND THEY COULD NOT RULE BY OPPRESSION AND FORCE OVER THEIR OWN PEOPLE”

N.Korea still has nuclear weapons!! Iran still has nuclear weapons!! Afghanistan, yes thanks to George W Bush, all its people can go about their daily business without fear of being killed????, and of course Robert Mugabe was terrified when he heard the name George W Bush and Gordon Brown, the whole world trebles when those two start taking control, not because of what they can do but because they have seen the disasters they are already responsible for.

So all these people that cant wait to put this guy down, some advice, make sure you keep your feet clean, the taste of a big foot in your mouth, even your own can taste horrible.

Read up on web and in books, this is where a great march went from Selma to Montgomery, there is a famous bridge in both film and pictures, in Selma, next to the bridge is a small museum dedicated to the march, you can read letters from the people at the churches, men & women beaten up before the march.
It followed on into the UK, how did the North Street (Dudley) race riots begin ? I can’t remember but will look into it-

I do not have a hate filled obsession to put people down, and actions do speak louder than words; I find his track record, his apparent lack of experience and the (sometimes hateful) bsession with his skin colour illogical grounds on which to elect the next President of the Unite States.

I asked people why they voted for him, with most saying it was because he was black. Their words. Neither am I saying the others you mention are better, but using the ‘lesser of two evils’ argument continues to sidesteps the real issue: what he actually plans to do. Would it be possible for you to consider the possibility that he is trying to be all things to everyone, and that in doing so he’s practically delivered nothing of substance? I see no reason for him to walk on water, not at this stage.

As Obama seams intent and adamant to pull US troops out of Iraq & concentrate on Afghanistan as quickly as possible, I wanted to know if our puppet government will be as quick to follow suit as they were to follow W Bush into Iraq in the first place.

I notice today the British government have said they want British forces out of Iraq by April 09. Just three days after the US elects a president who clearly wants out. Too much of a coincidence for my liking. But the sooner the better.

We were led there under false pretences on a bed of lies & deceit and if the new president intends to pull out then he would have got my vote for that to start with.

Jim G, I agree. People should give the guy a chance, even if he may have been elected on votes that may have been cast for the wrong reasons such as colour and race. I believe he may be the man to do the job and we will see over the next 4 years.
