Elokobi reveals injury fightback

Wednesday 5th November 2008, 11:29AM GMT.

8127ipswich-v-wolves.jpgGeorge Elokobi today revealed his inspiration for getting fit – watching the horrific moment he wrenched his cruciate knee ligaments over and over again.

The Wolves left-back has also had a second ‘cleaning out’ operation on his damaged left knee while he said he would be happy to stay for life after boss Mick McCarthy revealed plans to extend his contract.

And McCarthy will be heartened by the amazing show of bravery at the 22-year-old’s most painful moment of his career when he sustained the injury at Ipswich on August 16.

“I watch the moment when I got injured. That’s my motivation to get back,” said Elokobi.

“It doesn’t frighten me – I’ve watched it more than 30 times. It’s a motivation for me to make me want to be fighting fit again. I draw strength from it.

“The desire to relive it came from within me. As a player I want to be out there playing.

“I look at that DVD and think nothing can get worse than that injury in football. It makes me want to get up and fighting again for a place in the team.”

Elokobi is adamant he will make a full recovery.

“It was my last game but it’s not going to be my last game ever. I’ll get back,” he said. The Cameroon-born defender says his latest op will aid his rehabilitation.

“I had a ‘wash-out’ operation two weeks ago,” he said. “It’s a surgical thing to help speed up my recovery and I have to keep my left leg straight.

“I had a bit of swelling and fluid on it so I needed that washed out just to help me carry on with my rehab.”

Elokobi is under contract until 2010 but McCarthy wants to extend the terms even though the player won’t be fit until next summer.

“The manager has always been straight with me and very honest,” he said.

“I think he’s going to talk to me about my contract and if that’s the case, I’m very happy. I want to do my best for this club and want to be a part of it as long as the club wants me.

“If they want to offer me something, then great. They’re all showing me a lot of love and support.”

A speedy recovery is the best tonic for George and an extended contract an added incentive that will be boost his morale and confidence for the faith shown in his ability.

It will indeed be a boost to the rest of the team as a added reward for their commitment, hard work, ability and loyalty being reciprocated with extended contract.

Up the Wolves and a united team for the future.

Is there any player in modern history that has made such an impact so soon at molineux since thier arrival. Everytime I hear, see, or watch big george I just want him to do something special. His an inspiration to all. I think in Elo! we have one of the finest left backs in the country and a loyal one at that.

    3 cheers to you sir.

Good luck in the recovery stakes, George.
Just a thought, instead of spending time looking backwards at the DVD why dont you investigate the possibilities of nationalization. The one thing England really need is a left back of your quality. When you are back at full fitness you could make the job yours!

I had a good chat with Stephen Ward and Foley on Sunday afternoon and they are honest, hard working young footballers. They were there with Collins and Ward said the players are really gutted when they lose. This is probably unlike many eras of the past and it also shows how they stick together.
We are top of the league and have a team full of talented young British and Irish players. Leave these players alone to get on with it.
You can always go and watch the Tesco’s!

Hey trust me i get behind the team home and away as much as anybody else…but its a fact..Ward is not a left back!! Its like playing blake a right back and saying he tried hard so leave him in!! My brothers a football scout and the people in the trade all say the same.Hopefully with shackell and hill back the defence should be as good as any in the division.

When did i knock him or say that he doesn’t work hard enough?

I clearly said, he’s not a left back.

We signed two left backs in the Summer. Yes TWO.

One of them should be used at least.

Did you not see Ward get taken to the cleaners against Reading?

    19) Ward has done a very good job filling in at left back and ultimately will make him a much better player. People who have slated him in the past, have obviously never witnessed him putting in good performances as a centre forward – what he was bought for. He scored a quality goal a few years ago at Ipswich and will be a decent player in the future!

Come back big George, and Join the table toppers.

All our lads are doing great and I mean all. Please support them. Just because you dont think they are good enough, does not mean they are not good enough. The manager that has Wolves at the top of the league and will have loads of money to prove his worht in the premier next season, rates them. So whoever Mick picks gets my vote.

And surely by now, should get yours.
