Brazen drivers ignoring signs
Monday 3rd November 2008, 5:50PM GMT.
Drivers are defeating the object of the congestion-busting Brierley Hill bypass – by brazenly flouting signs and driving up the High Street.
Just days after the bypass opened motorists are clogging the town by ignoring the ‘buses only’ signs at the top of Mill Street, and at Stourbridge Road at the other end of the High Street.
The wilful ignorance of drivers is ensuring High Street remains as congested as it did before the £27 million bypass was opened on October 27. All vehicles except buses are supposed to use the bypass to go round, rather than through the town.
Brierley Hill-based delivery driver Dave Ellis said his drop-offs in town now took even longer to complete, because he obeyed the signs to travel into the town centre via the bypass, only to find the High Street as jammed as before. “I can understand why people are doing it because it’s quite a long way round,” he said. “But it’s annoying because the High Street is still choc-a-block.
“These drivers are defeating the whole point, and it can’t be because they don’t realise because the road is new – there are huge signs, as well as markings on the road and more signs on the traffic lights. People are simply ignoring them.”
Taxi driver Mohammed Rashid said it was frustrating that motorists were ignoring the signs while taxi and private hire drivers were sticking to the rules.

I drove along Mill Street then onto Moor Street, about a couple of weeks back, if these was a new road there they must have hidden it well, perhaps that’s the problem, no one knows the new road is there.
When they built the Cradley By Pass, there was clear evidence of it, and I have to say what a great job the contractors did of it, congratulations Cradley.

It is another example of pure selfishness that is so apparent in today’s society.
Or these people simply can’t read – which is again probably symbolic of today’s society.
However, my money’s on this lot just being a bunch of sheep without the ability to think for themselves – they probably see someone else do it and think “well, if they’re doing it…”

its the same all round the west mids there are no traffic police to oversee new junction arrgts or speed limits.
the accident on the tettenhall rd wv this morning is a case in point. it is a speed road except when commuter volume lowers the traffic speed. there are never police around to monitor traffic it is left to fixed cameras.

Another white elephant. I haven’t been through the new road yet, but no-one was told building the new Merry Hill access road (sorry Brierley Hill bypass) would mean banning cars completely from the High Street. I thought like Lye or Old Hill it would be to ease the flow not ban it! Dudley council have not publicised this well. Brierely Hill has enough problems with loss of trade to Merry Hill who have kept their free parking whilst Dudley has imposed massive increases on town shoppers. Was it worth knocking down the leisure centre and spending millions for this? Who decided when coming towards Brettel Lane from the High Street you now have to be in the RIGHT lane to go no and the STRAIGHT ON lane to go LEFT in to Mill Street.

They should put spikes down on the road to stop the selfish scum that drive through it

6. Have you considered that people may be trying to drive whilst still trying to work out where on earth they are supposed to go? The little red sign by the side of the road is hardly the most conspicuous.Which is the more serious, initial confusion over a road sign or deliberate damage to someone’s property as you suggest is needed?

The new bypass is a complete waste of time. At the moment, you can still legally drive thru the High Street. If you come from Stourbridge to Dudley via Brierley Hill, the signs point through the HS. Plus if you come from Dudley to BH you can’t go through the lights just before Asda (busues only) BUT, you can turn left there, then right by Asda, and then down the HS,plus traffic coming up Level Street or Pensnett can turn into the HS. It makes absolutely no sense at all at the moment

I came up from Wordsley Way up towards Brierley Hill last week. There were two of us in the car and we were trying to use the by-pass – neither of us could work out where we were supposed to go and ended up in the wrong lane -we did however manage to get across in the correct lane to come down the back of brieirley Hill but then the road is so confusing and dis-orentating we couldn’t find the way to turn into Level Street -better signing needed!
