A prosthetic limb and a diamond wedding ring have been found under a retiring rollercoaster at Alton Towers.The fake leg, which has not yet been claimed, was among a strange itinerary of items thought to have been lost by thrill-seekers through the loops on the Corkscrew ride.

It was found during a clear-up of the site which has started before the rollercoaster is run for the last time on November 9.

An array of lost property has been collected from below the ride during its 28-year-history, including 327 mobile phones, 53 shoes – none of which matched – 800 pieces of jewellery, a prosthetic ear and 10 items of underwear.

Alton Towers spokesman Russell Barnes said: “We deal with over 5,000 items of lost property every year including several unusual finds.

“As the Corkscrew is the oldest rollercoaster in the park, we were expecting to find some strange items when we started clearing the area but a prosthetic leg definitely tops the list as the most bizarre. If anyone has any information on the missing leg, we would be keen to hear from them.” The Corkscrew has covered the equivalent distance of travelling to the moon and back.
