Stearman gets stuck in traffic
Wednesday 29th October 2008, 12:29PM GMT.
Richard Stearman missed playing in last night’s Wolves match against Swansea because he failed to turn up on time.
The Wolverhampton-born former Leicester defender was held up by snow and traffic as he made the 60-mile journey from his home in Market Harborough in Leicestershire.
Players normally have to be at the ground 90 minutes before kick-off and it’s not known whether Stearman made it in time for the 7.45pm start.
But the £1.6m defender was too late to be considered for selection by boss Mick McCarthy, who revealed Stearman would have been in his starting line-up had he turned up on time, replacing Neill Collins.
Instead, Collins kept his place alongside Jason Shackell and, as McCarthy admitted, Stearman may struggle to get back in the team now.
“Richard Stearman was down to play but he arrived late for the game,” said McCarthy.
“He had problems with all the snow on the roads and accidents as we’ve seen and was stuck on the motorway.
“I hadn’t got a call and I couldn’t hang on any longer before doing my team talk. Neill Collins wasn’t going to play but he did and I thought he was excellent.”

Oh no!
You have to say that Collins may not have ability on his side but he makes up for it with hard work and a massive dose of luck! I imagine that had Stearman played, Collins would be starting a merited spell on the subs bench. Let’s hope it’s just a temporary stay of execution because he is clearly the weakest link in a brittle defensive chain!!
Stears has been fantastic this season, but turning up late regardless of the weather is a poor excuse. He had all day to get there!
I wonder, would Alex Ferguson, Big Phil or Arsene play Collins in the next game or Stearman? Would they forego a perceived loyalty factor for 3 points in a massive game that is crucuial to our place in the top 2?
All hyperthetical of course because our manager is Mick McCarthy not Alex Ferguson.
Stearman should never play for the club again.
funny that, i went too newcastle i daint get stuck in any snow, aye boing boing donk
Report abuse
I think Collins let his tyres down so that he could keep his place in the team.
EVEN THE TRAFFIC NOW KEEPS COLLINS IN THE TEAM. CANT WAIT FOR MAD MICKS NEXT EXCUSE TO KEEP COLLINS IN THE TEAM ????
Get Collins out and Stearman back in for Saturday Mick.
You are an idiot Stearman, finally a chance to get rid of Collins and you blow it!!
For gawd’s sake stears just when we thought we saw the back of collins!!!
Oh dear me!!!
You’re right Mick – Collins was excellent – as he has been for pretty much most of this season. It’s great to have competition for places.
Let’s enjoy things.
Best Wishes

Agree 100% Mick. He was simply superb.

is shackell out on saturday ?
Why on earth does he not relocate to the West Midlands to avoid such future problems? It is after all where he was born and raised.
Neil Collins is a very lucky guy but he did have an excellant game.
Is it fate or just favortism?
We can’t argue with top of the league so well done Mick Mcarthy.
Bring on Cardiff.
Thats ok collins did a great job last night WOLVES FOR EVER WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE
Report abuse
At least it was only Stears that didn’t turn up. Look at the Albion …Not one of their defenders did against Newcastle :-)
Guys, 60 miles away aint really that far for a commute in normal circumstances. I dont see why he has to move. I’ve had problems getting to work when it’s been 10 miles before when its been naff weather
Not really any excuses for not calling the boss though.
Yes folks, credit where credit’s due, Neil Collins played extremely well last night and was up against a very good, lively Swansea side who knocked the ball around with great style. Thought we did well to get out of the game with a win and credit to SEB for again popping in the crucial goals. A point at Cardiff will do me!!! WE ARE WOLVES.
if your running last you should phone the boss, if i did that i would loose me bonus
Report abuse
Did Collins create the snow? Has he managed somehow to crash a few cars in Stearmans way?
;-)

6. Collins didn’t make any mistakes last night. That’s not how I would define magnificent. If you set the bar low enough, its easy to improve.
surprised wolvesmod the muppet hasnt txt yet the sado

6. Jon makes an excellent point. I had a meeting in London at 4, got the train and after and still made it to the match. The weather was forecast so he should have got the train or left in the morning!
I was not a fan of Collins last season at all. BUT, last night he was excellent. He is much more comfortable on the right side of central defence.
Man of the season so far though, without doubt is Foley. Not one bad game.
Just a case of super mick showing how super he is,,we have seen many games delayed because of Trafic or Weather,,surely he could have been a bit sympathetic,,,you were lucky last night boss, but you could have been left with egg on your face,,Wolves First not the bosses ego..

I travelled from near blackburn and I was on time! what the hell… this guy should be fined for his lack of professionalism.
Let’s be honest, who wants to live in our dump hole.
One of the main reasons we failed to sign certain players when we got promoted.
Why do you think Portsmouth attract big names and are now established – cos it’s a nice area to live in.
C;mon Stearman. Get you act together. We need the close bonding after the FE saga.Hope you read my posts, Stearman.Cheers

Sack them all……If they can’t live on the ring road then stuff them. We want commitment!!
What the hell you still living there for! there’s loads of places in wolverhampton dock his wages MM lol

Why are the players traveling to the ground on game day. Most clubs put up their players in a hotel the night before the game, even for the home games!!! We are still operating in the dark ages!!!! Wake up Wolves, we may get up to Prem, but this is essential fundamental discipline totally lacking especially at this level. The players should all be totally focused on the game for at least the last 4 or so hours before the game….not driving. This is crazy.
Terry”inane-comment”Baggie – that’s an awful long way to drive to watch your team lose!
-I’m just waiting for the “well yow aye in the Prem am ya” respone – he’s more of a DONK than their penalty-gifting defender
Report abuse
lets hope mick dosent go on one of his vendettas and hold this against stearman for the rest of his life,
as for collins being excellent, … well he didnt make any mistakes but stearman gives us far more in possesion
Report abuse
I don’t think pro footballers should be commuting to matches for such a distance. Driving can be both tiring, stressful and demanding especially at that hour and in those conditions. We need fully prepared players focussing on the game. I’m amazed he was doing this on a match day.
Inexcusable! Try that with your boss – see what he thinks?
A little bit of realism please folks….. Collins not the greatest footballer but he hasnt been half bad this season, not a natural by any means but watch him when we lose it hurts him big time. (granted he may have lost us the game but it still hurts)The reason why we have let in a shed loads of goals recently is because we have not been defending from the front. Last night however Ebanks ran his socks off even when they had got the ball. We need to get get Kites firing again he has been of the pace most of the season despite whatever Player of The Month awards go his way.He has been below par with the ball and has given Foley very little help when defending. I predicted at half time he would come of last night i just hope this is a blip and not some sort of sulk over the protracted new deal which eventually took place in the summer. Only after his agent had circled his name to a few clubs.
Keep the faith work your socks of lads, look like you give a damn and to be honest i dont really care what division we play our football in.
Prediction Wolves will recieve a decent bid for Foley in January. Hennesey will be back in the team just prior to the transfer window opening up, and oh yes Albion will be dowm by Xmas.:)
The Albion fan who posted earlier might not have got stuck in snow, but he saw his team of no hopers lose yet again!
#7 says Stears ‘should never play for the club again’. That’s clever. If he misses the next game claiming the dog chewed a hole in his boots, maybe, but everyone, except Wayne, is allowed to make a mistake.
Maybe we should sell all our Under 21 Internationals? Tiring of these knee jerk reactions to every single mistake being make.
We have been leaking goals like theres no tomorrow, but look at the table, look at the fact we have won 3/4. The blip was down mainly to injuries and suspension for the Reading & Swansea games, plus a bout of calamity at Norwich. Top of the league. What more do people want?
Hi raffo
How you doing me old china?
Enjoy the game last night? Did you manage to tune your radio in?
So he lives miles away from the ground. It started to snow in Manchester mid morning and in Stoke about 1 hour later. Obviously where he lives, no TV or Radio, so that he could have seen or listened to the weather forecasts. Also he did not get in touch, so does he not have a mobile phone and did he not pass a phonebox whilst on the way to the ground? If he was on a motorway, pull off or go to the service areas to phone. How strange….I bet you he will still expect his WIN BONUS though. A very poor state of affairs! To think that the Great William Ambrose Wright always CYLCLED to the ground. He lived in Shrewsbury. No motorways in those days.

I had to laugh when I read this report, Collins is destined to be a 1st team regular forever !
What odds on Collins to be club captain next season ??? lol

6 there was no snow up Newcastle last night, they said on tele how mild it was up there, must have been something on the pitch though, your lot slipped up again.

Billy Wright lived in Ironbridge and there is no evidence whatsoever to show he cycled to the ground.

5) A stupid comment. So John Carew should never play for Villa again as he was in a lap dancing club and also should Man Utd leave Ronaldo on the bench because he wanted to go to Real Madrid. It is not going to happen as they are class and the fans would not be best pleased.
A stupid error which will cost him his place. However, Foley apart, he has been our best defender and we will need him back sooner rather than later. Collins has no problem in the air but when you get a player like Lita against him it’s game over.
We must have our best defensive line up together when we play the likes of Quincy, Jerome, Phillips and O’Connor of the Blues!

collins is not the answer, stearman has real quality, one misdemeanour shouldn`t count against him,if he has been regularly late to training and so on this cause of action might have been justified, but i`m sure mm will hold it against him ss he did with eastwood and i`m sure he love the fact that he was late so he could carry on playing that muppet collins,it could be the diference between promotion and not…..
Must admit I didnt hear this till after the game and presumed he was dropped because of his needless sending off at Norwich which in all honesty he probably deserves. Its hard because yes he is better than Collins but at the same time it was unprofessional at Norwich and even more so not turning up on time for a match. No excuses. I know someone who came from Nottingham and he made it in perfect time and he is a spectator never mind a player…….Ouch.Have to say its a hard decision but wouldnt be suprised if he’s dropped to the bench against Cardif.
I live in Rugby and even though the journey did take approx 30 mins longer i was still in Wolvo by 6.15. Stears would probably taken the same route that i did. With weather/road problems available via the internet there is no excuse. Stears should be fined and made an example of. I am sure he is more than embaressed about the situation so hopefully will come back fired up for the weekend.

6 Shame you went all that way for nothing AGAIN

You are a complete idiot. Comments like that proves without doubt that you were not at the match last night. Collins was superb and didn’t put a foot wrong all night.
If you can’t think of anything constructive to say then SHUT UP!!!!
It is unforgiveable for a player in this day and age not being able to get to the ground on time, whats worse he did’nt have the courtesy to get in touch with Mick to say where he was.
However if Shackell is injured and with Craddock still a few weeks away. Stearman will probably start against Cardiff, play a blinder, we get three points, stay top of the league and everyone will forget this ever happened!!
But Jez, lets make sure this never happens again. Put the players up in a hotel before a game and then they can all come in as one, as a team and Mick then has more preperation time with them
Report abuse
Its snow joke when you get left out in the cold! (from the Krankies joke book 1975). Anyway, this one is for Hibbett Dived, where are you?
Not phoning is not good, but everyone is late occasionally. Would you expect to get fined at work for being late once??? No i didn’t think so. I hope he learns his lesson though.
I wasn’t there, so can’t really comment on Collins except that i heard he played well, but something is niggling me at the moment. If it had been Collins or Keogh that had been late, i honestly think Mick would’ve stuck up for them. He definitely wouldn’t have said ‘He’ll struggle to get back in the team now after this’.
There is something in the air at Wolves at the moment, and i don’t like it. There’s been a virtual wall of silence surrounding Hennessey. We, the paying fans have a right to know what is going on. There is no room for secrecy or favouritism at this level.
I’m not slagging Mick off or anything, he’s the best manager we’ve had for a long time, but he wants to be careful with the games he’s playing with both players and fans.
