Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Mick sits pretty after Swansea win

Mick McCarthy admitted Wolves “won ugly” again after beating what he said was an “excellent” Swansea last night.

The Wolves boss watched his side earn their third victory in four after similarly scruffy successes against Coventry and Watford to move a point clear at the top of the Championship again.
“It might have been another case of winning ugly, but a win’s a win,” said McCarthy.
“I was really worried about this game because Swansea are a very good team.
“They’ve got a way of playing and do it as well as anybody I’ve seen, their players look comfortable with the ball and want to pass it. In the first-half I thought we dealt with it particularly well, but in the second – as the game got stretched – it probably suited them a little bit.
“Of the teams we’d played so far, Reading were probably the best but Swansea were excellent.
“Maybe they haven’t got the firepower of Reading but they’re still a very good side.”
McCarthy, however, believes Wolves’ margin of victory could have been more emphatic after Chris Iwelumo had two efforts disallowed.
“He was up early for his first effort and maybe that’s why he was all over him a little bit,” said the boss.
“But he nailed the header and I thought it was a fabulous goal – like a crossing and finishing session.
“I thought it was a wonderful goal.
“I didn’t really see anything wrong with the second either.
“The whole team has benefited from Chris being here.
“He’s been a good player for us.
“I think he’s a centre forward who takes those knocks and bumps and when he works as hard as he does, it gives you a chance.”
McCarthy also revealed his delight at Carlos Edwards, who set up the second for two-goal Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, who earlier netted a fine solo effort.
“I was pleased for Sylvan and delighted for Carlos Edwards as well who provided such a good cross. I was thrilled with Carlos,” he said.
“I wasn’t happy with him at Norwich and that wasn’t just because of the goal he gave away, but his general performance. He played well last night.
“We know what Sylvan’s all about because he’s a good player.
“They were two different goals and I don’t think anyone else in the team would have scored that first one.
“Michael Kightly might be able to run past players and score one, but Sylvan’s the only player in the side who would have scored that with his back to goal and to be as strong and powerful as he was to twist, turn and then finish.
“I’d like to have thought some of the others would have scored the second as it was put right on his head but he picked his spot.
“But it was still a good finish.”
McCarthy is now relishing a trip to third-placed Cardiff on Saturday tea-time.
“Cardiff will be another tough game because they’re a good, solid side as well,” he said.
“But maybe Cardiff have got a tough game on Saturday as well! That’s the way I view it.”
